I see you haven't posted in a while, but I just found your account! I'm 24 now and have been dealing with misophonia since high school. It has gradually gotten worse for me with no support from my family. But tomorrow I'm finally seeing a psychiatric nurse practitioner for it! :) If you did try hypnotherapy, I would love to watch a video about your experience! Thank you so much for sharing online. I thought I was alone for a long time, so it feels so relieving to see someone understands <3

Something that works pretty well for me is the use of pleasant smells. I carry this very fragrant jar of L'Oréal "overworked" hair putty with me and breathe it in *only* when I am faced with a trigger noise and therefore feeling under the weather with my hearing. I find the smell quite pleasant and it stays strong through time, but it could be any other product you enjoy the smell of for you. I am quite sensitive to smells so maybe this explains partially why this works for me. I am essentially using the fact that smells can create a bad or good emotion in me to my misophonic advantage. I hope this can help someone else!

I also hate the sniffling. Loud chewers make me feel rage and super irritated and wet sniffing makes me want to puke like really really grosses me out that i have to get away from the sound. Was researching the flare and loop headphones but neither seem to be the answer...

I have seen the people reviewing the Calmer earplugs and they seem to think it does nothing at first but after wearing them for a few days they realise it has helped. Because they aren’t meant to muffle sound very much, you wouldn't hear much difference when you put them on and if you only wear them for a short time you would probably have a heightened awareness off sound because you’re listening to hear if there is a difference. The hearing aids was an interesting idea. It’s probably a condition that people are typically slow to have properly diagnosed so that kind of thing isn't an obvious solution by any means.

heads up for people like me who are watching this video or others like it, and the lack of a pop filter on the mouth sounds are getting to you: play this at 1.5 speed or higher. this has been a life saver for when you need to wear headphones, though it messes up background music.

What works for me: Playing instrumental music on over-ear wireless headphones. I love the cheap kind that are like $20 and marketed for gaming. I'm a mom in a big family and my biggest trigger is mouth sounds. After I serve out a meal to my kids, I pop on my headphones and wave "goodbye" to them with a smile. Then I play my music and sit across the room where they can still see me to eat my own food. I adjust my own behavior, I can't expect anyone else to adjust for me.

I just wish people understood the agony of misophonia. These sounds aren’t just “annoying”, they are torture. They make me so angry, I start to feel hateful. My all-time worst trigger is dry mouth. It’s when someone is talking, and you can hear the smacking/squelching of their tongue & lips on every enunciation. No poem could ever articulate my eternal hatred for this noise. I haven’t been able to get through a Ted Talk for years, because of it. I just want to scream “GO SWISH WATER!!!” before breaking down into ugly sobs. One of my favorite speakers, Sam Harris, gives amazing lectures on subjects that fascinate me. But he has dry mouth so much of the time, I can no longer endure to listen to him. The sound of a smacky mouth being echoed into a crackley mic gives me shivers, the way a knife slicing through living flesh gives me shivers. I just wish there was a cure for this crippling condition.

Something I used to do if I couldn’t leave class was to count the times I heard the noise that was triggering me. In absence of any way to block it out, it at least helped distract me a tiny bit from the emotional charge.

Exposure is cruel. CBT doesn’t work. Earplugs are avoidance. My rage happens faster than I can relax so it misses the point. My trigger noises do also cut through white noises. My triggers are chewing noises and it seriously goes from hearing->amygdala->rage/pain wo stopping. I think any tx that doesn’t address brain connectivity w the sound is destined to miss the mark. Thank you for this.

Wow! We've tried the same things and had the same reactions, although I would rate earplugs and Flare Calmer earplugs even lower because they didn't make it better AND they were uncomfortable and annoying to wear. White sound is great, avoidance is great but ends up very isolating. Trigger Tamer does not work.

Thank you for your video. For me, it all started with white noise machines! I was working in a therapy office, sitting near five noise machines. I couldn’t concentrate, I was getting frustrated and angry and wanted to cry; but most of all, wanted to take a loaded gun and blow up every single noise machine! It was then that my therapist said I could have Misophonia. Now, I’m in a different job and my biggest struggle is the air conditioning vent. My coworkers don’t understand. It’s bad. I just cry at my desk. What should I do?

When impossible to avoid (a sound), I use either earplugs or earmuffs, in some work dynamics, wearing them is not possible (forbidden or impractical). From personal experience I'll say that even when some people think wearing hearing protection is bad because it "makes you more sensitive to the sound" or perhaps people around you say it's impolite to cover your ears (or having to tap you in the shoulder every time they need to communicate with you), NOTHING would be worse than (finally) losing control of those violent, intense thoughs you're already having. You might end up hurting others or yourself. If the suffering gets bad enough you might (eventually) break and actually do the things you're thinking about doing. Even showing signs that you're about to or willing to do what you're thinking about might get you in real trouble (although that would remove you from the situation causing you distress, preventing you doing something you might later regret). When you finally break, people around you and even yourself will agree that it would have been better to just suddenly leave. So in hindsight, wearing earplugs/earmuffs and having to explain why you need them would be better than harming others or yourself. That being said, I do realize that most people will disregard your struggles and even your violent thoughts and only retroactively say "you should have say something instead of going crazy". My point is, it's better to not let things escalate. We overestimate our capacity to endure abuse (of any kind). If you're already having that kind of thoughts and emotional reactions, in my experience, that means that your "other you" is getting ready to take control (and you won't see it coming, it's a switch, not a dimmer). Just a thought from a random stranger. Wishing you the best.
