Disclaimers:
1. Not all of these are treatment options. Some are just management techniques.
2. Just because something did or did not work for me, this does not reflect how it might work for you. All of these (except exposure) are viable treatments/techniques that may help you manage your misophonia.
I've done quite a lot of research on misophonia, so let me know if you have any questions about it!
Thank you, everyone!

It would be so helpful if other people would acknowledge and validate the symptoms of people with misophonia. Like please don't get angry with me if I need to remove myself, and dismiss my issues as a pet peeve that I need to just get over.

I just wish people understood the agony of misophonia. These sounds aren’t just “annoying”, they are torture. They make me so angry, I start to feel hateful. My all-time worst trigger is dry mouth. It’s when someone is talking, and you can hear the smacking/squelching of their tongue & lips on every enunciation. No poem could ever articulate my eternal hatred for this noise. I haven’t been able to get through a Ted Talk for years, because of it. I just want to scream “GO SWISH WATER!!!” before breaking down into ugly sobs. One of my favorite speakers, Sam Harris, gives amazing lectures on subjects that fascinate me. But he has dry mouth so much of the time, I can no longer endure to listen to him. The sound of a smacky mouth being echoed into a crackley mic gives me shivers, the way a knife slicing through living flesh gives me shivers. I just wish there was a cure for this crippling condition.

Yup - I actually had a YT creator listen to me ‘Surviving the Survivor’ and is making an effort to change the sound design and the triggers that he and his guests make. I almost cried. There are two other YT creators ‘CC Suarez’ and Michelle McDaniels’ who have misophonia too and run clean shows w trigger warnings when the can’t mute the sounds and have to play them. I hate that ppl think I’m just trying to control them. I’m old and it’s getting a bit better w ppl being receptive but it feels like I’m risking a lot to tell ppl. Derision but worse, intentionally trying to trigger me. Those ppl are in danger of getting their noses pushed into their brains (hypothetically)

But in the movie they mute a lot of the triggers. I can usually watch the movie but not in a theater. It’s interesting that the film, tv and commercial industries seem to know more about misophonia than the experts.

Sniffing and loud chewing is killer, and yes, sniffling classmates in college was horrible. The only chewing and sniffling noises that had ZERO effect on me were my kids when they were under 5. It's like they didn't apply to the "rule" in my brain that you shouldn't eat loudly or sniff your nose. Anyway, if you haven't already, L-theanine is one supplement that noticeably takes off the edge of the rage for me. Also, proper sleep, exercise, and diet improve symptoms. Try avoidance of MSG, food dyes, and high sugars. Basically, recommendations that naturopaths make for autism seem to work for misophonia.

Living with Misophonia is crippling. Quality of life is so low, and anxiety is so high. I have lived with this condition since I was a young kid and am now 40. If anything, the condition has gotten worse as I have become older. It has destroyed relationships due to the amount of stress it has caused, although my current partner is very understanding of the condition and does everything she can to help. Over the years, I have tried different techniques to help with the condition but have yet to find anything practical and worthwhile. Like yourself, sniffing is my biggest nemesis. Also coughing, loud eating, rustling plastic... all triggers. For me, and I am sure this applies to others, my Misophonia extends to physical triggers such as people shaking their feet and rubbing their nose. Being in a room full of people, yet feeling so alone and isolated is the most difficult feeling to cope with, but it is reassuring, and sad, knowing that this is a common cognitive issue that a lot of people (unfortunately) suffer from 😓😓

Im 62 and can totally relate to your post . I too suffered from a very young age . I have ptsd and anxiety disorder which keeps me feeling on high alert at most times like a watchman on guard . Ive taken classess not knowing I had this Misophonia in hopes of maintaining and keeping relationships throughout my life such as DPT , EMT anger management and lots of 1 on 1 tbrough the years since 1980's . I eat alone at home . My triggers are many but mostly crunching , oral noises . Bag rustling . Feet shuffling . Ive described it as the noise is being " done to me" AT ME ! Its an assault ! I have an immediate zero to sixty response and I hv to leave that spot where THAT noise-assault on ME is happening . So I do . No fanfare just get away quickly . Ive left grocery carts of food in line at stores . Many times . So ya ....thats my tale of woe lol

This really proves how the same disorder (not sure if that’s the right term) can be different for everyone. For example her own heartbeat triggers her whereas for me nothing i do triggers me it’s only things others do. However I relate to her when she said that sniffling is one of her biggest triggers because it’s one of mine as well. I also have many signs of ocd (however I am not diagnosed) which honestly makes it so much worse in the sense that if do something to cope I have to do it evenly. For example if hitting my heel on the ground helps I have to do multiple times to make it feel even. I really wish misophonia was more understood and not thought of as if someone is exaggerating or doing it for attention :(

To me what really helps is noise cancelling headphones. I feel like if I only mask the triggering sound, instead of isolating it, it's not enough and I always end up feeling stressed and anxious. When I isolate the triggering sound with my noise cancelling headphones, I get some peace and that really helps my mental health, especially on those days where I feel more irritated by sounds than usual. So, noise cancelling headphones + white noise / ocean or rain sounds is what works best for me.

@@gayaneg.3805 idk about earbuds, but I can recommend loop quiet earplugs. I've only had them for a short time, but gotta say they're really comfortable (which I've never found with earbuds/headphones) and block out more sounds than I would've expected for them 'just' being earplugs. However, if hearing yourself is a trigger too (like swallowing or whatever) then they might not be suitable, as earplugs do enhance this.

heads up for people like me who are watching this video or others like it, and the lack of a pop filter on the mouth sounds are getting to you: play this at 1.5 speed or higher. this has been a life saver for when you need to wear headphones, though it messes up background music.
@jacobpaint
@jacobpaint 28 күн бұрын
I have seen the people reviewing the Calmer earplugs and they seem to think it does nothing at first but after wearing them for a few days they realise it has helped. Because they aren’t meant to muffle sound very much, you wouldn't hear much difference when you put them on and if you only wear them for a short time you would probably have a heightened awareness off sound because you’re listening to hear if there is a difference. The hearing aids was an interesting idea. It’s probably a condition that people are typically slow to have properly diagnosed so that kind of thing isn't an obvious solution by any means.

What works for me: Playing instrumental music on over-ear wireless headphones. I love the cheap kind that are like $20 and marketed for gaming. I'm a mom in a big family and my biggest trigger is mouth sounds. After I serve out a meal to my kids, I pop on my headphones and wave "goodbye" to them with a smile. Then I play my music and sit across the room where they can still see me to eat my own food. I adjust my own behavior, I can't expect anyone else to adjust for me.

I have trouble with pretty much almost every single sound. So just sound, period. Unless I am making the sound my self, or I am in the mood for listening to music. White noise can help although to much of it and the white noise also starts to bother me. So for me almost absolute silence (or complete avoidance) has helped alot. Ofc it doesn’t solve it but after living closer to the forrest with very few neighbours for a few years, I can handle alot more sound than before I lived there. Although these days I am forced to tolerate more sounds at work etc so its getting worse again and my own breathing when I go to bed can even bother me if I have been triggered to much through out the day. limited exposure has also helped to a certain degree. But I need new methods if Im gonna be able to work again.

A specific white noise that helps me with sniffing is polar express white noise on spotify or looping multiple podcasts at once. I feel like the constant chatter and noise from these sources helps hide the other noises because there is so much going on with what you’re listening to. The only issues I’ve had with it are 1- some people in podcasts and once every 3 minutes or so in the polar express white noise will cough which is one of my triggers & 2- it can be very distracting if you’re trying to focus (i mostly use it when eating with/near others or when doing surface level/easy work ie. making flashcards)

When impossible to avoid (a sound), I use either earplugs or earmuffs, in some work dynamics, wearing them is not possible (forbidden or impractical). From personal experience I'll say that even when some people think wearing hearing protection is bad because it "makes you more sensitive to the sound" or perhaps people around you say it's impolite to cover your ears (or having to tap you in the shoulder every time they need to communicate with you), NOTHING would be worse than (finally) losing control of those violent, intense thoughs you're already having. You might end up hurting others or yourself. If the suffering gets bad enough you might (eventually) break and actually do the things you're thinking about doing. Even showing signs that you're about to or willing to do what you're thinking about might get you in real trouble (although that would remove you from the situation causing you distress, preventing you doing something you might later regret). When you finally break, people around you and even yourself will agree that it would have been better to just suddenly leave. So in hindsight, wearing earplugs/earmuffs and having to explain why you need them would be better than harming others or yourself. That being said, I do realize that most people will disregard your struggles and even your violent thoughts and only retroactively say "you should have say something instead of going crazy". My point is, it's better to not let things escalate. We overestimate our capacity to endure abuse (of any kind). If you're already having that kind of thoughts and emotional reactions, in my experience, that means that your "other you" is getting ready to take control (and you won't see it coming, it's a switch, not a dimmer). Just a thought from a random stranger. Wishing you the best.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Avoidance is effective but so isolating. Agh! Question if you’re open: did you happen to endure any trauma while in the womb or up to 6 months after being born? Or did your mom endure any trauma (emotional or physical) while you were in the womb?

Exposure is cruel. CBT doesn’t work. Earplugs are avoidance. My rage happens faster than I can relax so it misses the point. My trigger noises do also cut through white noises. My triggers are chewing noises and it seriously goes from hearing->amygdala->rage/pain wo stopping. I think any tx that doesn’t address brain connectivity w the sound is destined to miss the mark. Thank you for this.

Be careful with long term use of earplugs. It can cause wax build up and ear impactions causing distortions or complete hearing loss and also sometimes ear infections.

ear plugs i agree 99% are trash thast why its in C. you need to try the ones i discovered, i ve tested tons and 99% were either trash or not as effective. Try out Cord Max (extreme) from sonic shop but not their new version its also trash. it must be the pink ones.
