What I took from the Legend of Mick Dodge documentary is that he was a drunk and a vagabond who couldn't do much in the woods. Glad to see he lives on land with a barn and not actually in a hole in the side of pile of moss in the forest. Was that documentary a mockumentary? It seems like one.

Should i feed mealworms before they turn into pupae?
@dallinlowe10312 ай бұрын
So I made one and it worked for a week. Swimming with maggots. I’ve been trying to consistently add food not no maggots. Do I have to clean it out? Add or remove moisture? How do I keep it going?

What do you do with the small pupae? Are they left there with the mealworms?

Way too much PVC, too much work and way too many places for mosquitos to lay eggs.

way too many parts. soda cans and a pvc pipe. that's it. So much wasted space in your buckets. Fill those puppies up. More room the better, especially for the mater plants.

You can create a pretty accurate pilot hole with a soldering iron.

Good design, but a lot of water wasted. I live in an area where drought is frequent, so every drop of water counts. To limit the water loss, you can simply pipe the overflow to the next bucket, and to the next bucket, all the way to the end. Just make sure you have a container to catch the water of the last overflow. Plus, with my suggested setup, you only need one water input pipe going down into the soil. Also, there are designs out there where the water input is on the outside bottom of the bucket. Use 90º elbows.

I do the end posts first then tie a string so all the center posts are in a trait line if that matters to you sometimes it doesn't, I use wood posts instead of Metal poles because it gets more expensive with all the hardware $11.00 wood instead of $25.00 metal pole ads up quick not to mention the cost of wood panel fence today.

Hey I noticed your video. You have probably upgraded to the self watering rain gutter garden system by now. I was where you are in this video, but have since gone to the self watering system. Way easier, plus it allows you to leave for a couple of weeks and not have to worry about watering tomatoes. Keep up the good work

Well next time use a smaller drill bit to make pilot holes then a bit bigger bit then your final size or siply rest the surface you're drilling directly on a piece of wood for support and you will have 0% chance of your tub cracking while you drill holes

It allows you to fill the reservoir quickly, without having to let the water seep through the soil in the bucket.

Problem I'm seeing is the water being channeled to the bottom of the buckets, and the roots way up at the top. They'd have to grow a bunch for the roots to find the moisture. I'd drill holes in the pipes to let the water seep out higher up. How MUCH did it cost for 100 pvc fittings????
@WelcomeBackWoods6 ай бұрын
If you watch the original video of the series, you’ll see that we have a solo cup with holes filled with soil that hangs down into the water reservoir. Through capillary action, this wicks the perfect amount of water up into the larger bucket to help the plants grow until the roots reach the water below. I had all the fittings left over from various other projects. Thanks for watching!
@tonybucca56676 ай бұрын
@@WelcomeBackWoods OK...I didn't see that video. I'm a big proponent of 5 gallon buckets. I half-bury milk jugs with holes in the bottom of mine. I can see where watering all at once is a plus!

My only tips - flare the hole toward the bottom and then make sure the top of your concrete is 3-4" below the surface, and then pack dirt above. If you get frost, the ground surface freezes first and will lock that slug in there so it doesn't heave. Combined with the flared hole/slug shape, it will be rock solid!
@markrichards97924 ай бұрын
the soil at the top will rot out your posts much quicker. The flare at the bottom is a good idea. I use a little bit of sono tube at the top to give it a nice round shape

Run your drill in reverse on plastic... should help with breaking
@StephanieLarsen1237 ай бұрын
This is great, thanks so much. 2 questions: • Would it be a good idea to get some plastic screening to cover the holes on the bottom to keep dirt from leaching into the resevoir? • Would food grade plastic would keep nasty chems from leaching into the soil, or is it not really an issue? thanks
@WelcomeBackWoods7 ай бұрын
Hello! Have not had issues with soil washing down, but you can always take out the top bucket and clean the bottom if needed. I have since started making these systems out of food grade buckets, just to be safe. Happy growing!
@CFav77 ай бұрын
Thank you for this. I'm curious as to approx. how much water you used for each hole, after filling them with concrete, and if it's possible to over-fill or under-fill with water, thus causing the concrete to not harden correctly? Thank you again! :)
@WelcomeBackWoods7 ай бұрын
You can under water, and the concrete would not harden correctly. From my experience, you cannot over water.

A good way to keep soil from leaking out the holes into the water is to put some coffee filters down before you put in the soil. Great design!
