I also bought the The sieve. I also bought the around one, to fit into the greens mine/ gardening sieve. They work absolutely fantastic. He is in America and I got my delivery here in Australia. Great customer service.

wally kern, you can also use a regular plastic bowl and just drilled out holes in it .. use a drill bit that's almost the size of the pupa, so everything will go through, but the pupa, it's cheap and effective .

Have you tried to hand sift the frass, and food? then place the larvae and pupa on a....maybe a supported level saucer...would the larvae crawl back into the food tray leaving the pupae? So they would sort themselves. Just asking.

A potential stupid question since I haven't grown mealworms (yet), but couldn't you just lure them? I.e put everything to one side of the box and put some delicious treats (or their watersource) on the other side? We know the pupae will not move, so the question is whether the larvae will
@WelcomeBackWoods6 жыл бұрын
LiveYourLife that might work, but it can still be irritating to sift through the bran. This tool has been the most effective method I have found.
@MissNebulosity4 жыл бұрын
So wait, what's better? The green stack of sieves, or the single sifter by Scott? Is the single sifter from Scott just for pupae? Should I still look into getting the green sieves? Does scotts design for pupae work better because the holes are not square since the pupae themselves are oblong? I really want to learn from all of the people who have tried all the different methods, and I want to START with the method that has the greatest chance of being my long term solution. I'd rather invest in the right stuff than try to do something cheap and have to spend 2-3 times the cost AGAIN to get the right stuff.
@WelcomeBackWoods4 жыл бұрын
MissNebulosity Scott’s sifter works best for the pupae, the sifters work best for worms and frass. Scott now makes a pupae sifting disc that’s fits in the top of the green sifters. Haven’t tried it, but it looks pretty effective. Good luck!

Edward Keenan about 2 lb / wk. I would get the extra large sifter if you are processing that much volume.

I learn tons from your video. I wanted to ask about the green sifters. I did buy the 6th sifter to separate the bran from the frass. Will there be beetle eggs be in the frass?
@setokaiba27114 жыл бұрын
Beth Stubbs initially yes. You want to let that sit in a drawer to get the last worms out before you sell the frass or throw it awat

Has anyone tried a queen bee sorting screen? The slots are 4.1mm, so should sort the curved pupae from the larvae. I've gambled on it, and ordered a 40x50cm plastic screen for $5 from China.Where else?

for those that doesn't want to spend money on a sifter, all you need to do is find a plastic bowl and use a drill and drilled out bunches of holes that the pupa and beetles can't go through.. this works just as fast as these sifters that's gonna cost you $5-10 ..

You should also be wearing eye protection to keep the dust out of your eyes and gloves to keep it off your skin. You can develop serious allergies from overexposure to the fras.

Thanx for sharing. It's a super cool product and I love it also! Let me share with you thoughts on a deeper subject. And I'm not claiming anything scientific, just asking the devil's advocate question. You say you end up with the big pupae, which give bigger mealworms which is what is best. I can see that in general, more food is better. But are the bigger ones also comparatively more nutritious ? Could the bigger ones just be swollen with "less nutritive" meat? Have we any research on this? Just asking. If it turns out that the small ones are more resistant, maybe have more concentrated nutritional "stuff", it would be a shame to get rid of them. ;-P
@WelcomeBackWoods5 жыл бұрын
Benoit Daoust a fine point, and no, I do not know the answer. I know that we are running into that issue in commercial produce (apples today are significantly less nutritionally dense since we have selected for size, color, and sweetness primarily) but I am not sure if the same holds true for animal products.
