I’ve noticed a lot of her “skincare routines” are totally nonsensical too. Just speaking on the first video you show, she digs into an oil cleanser which is supposed to remove makeup but then shows herself using a makeup wipe. Those magnetic charcoal masks are totally useless. I could probably go on lol.

In the next few weeks, i want to try out three different crafts. Shibori dying, making calder inspired mobiles and tapestry weaving. Any of these could be done either with utilising a full workshop, or with barely any supplies. For the shibori, i only bought dye (3 batches x 3e), i had old sheets and scrap fabric, clothespins, twine, coins or other items to imprint with. For the tapestry, ill just buy a small heap of nails to make a small loom out of a picture frame. A friend of mine is looking to get rid of yarn that isnt to her liking, so ill be getting three skeins for free. And for the mobiles, i bought wire and special pliers (5e), and asked friends to save me a few cans from drinks. Im slowly accumulating aluminium sheets to cut shapes, maybe birds. So, about 15e total for at least a month of exploring a new things, and all the supplies fit into a very small drawer. If i like any of it, i might get more serious supplies, but these will be great for testing.

I love journaling (have been doing it for almost 9 years) and all the stationary related to that. Unfortunately the FOMO in the community is huge, especially because most creators (like in the makeup field) get a ton of expensive staff for free. Also, journaling means wanting to learn lettering, drawing, painting… so yeah, it can be a lot 😅. Luckily it is a hobby where you can get a good result with just a few items and creativity, and the learning curve is quite rapid. Fortunately I started small with a good notebook and a few coloured markers and began to gradually grow my collection only after I understood my love for journaling. To the people who want to start journaling here is my motto: your trash, my treasure. Pamphlets, business cards, magazines, catalogs… are all full of images that can be used to decorate the page on a budget (and that also will make your journal truly yours and unique).

Unpopular opinion, but I think the Sims advent calendar was a great idea. First of all, it was PR so no one spent money on it in the first place. Second of all, it didn't cause nor encourage the accumulation of needless goods since there weren't any included in it. Third, it's all recyclable, which is fairly unique for PR. And fourth, it encourages people to use and enjoy a game they already have. It may not be for everyone, but I don't really see any harm.

All of the major pieces of furniture in my home are second hand. All solid wood too. But we bought it off facebook marketplace and i just love all of it. I had a lot of patience in finding pieces that fit my taste and are timeless in their aesthetics. Solid wood furniture can last generations. My dining table is in need of resurfacing, but thats the thing i got the set for $200 used and its still has a ton of life in it, and once i refinish the top it will have even more life in it, and putting a fresh coat of stain and urethane on it isn't much more than $40.

I do spend a lot on hobbies but I have zero regrets. Photography (big money even if I buy refurbished). Oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, I do all three. Reading. These are my self care activities and I love taking photos of my pets, other pets, and nature. I’m not out buying every gadget though, I’m not a pro. I’m just a hobbyist. I disagree about wanting to do watercolor but instead doing acrylic paint for the time being because they are two totally different mediums. You won’t know until you try the new medium. If you want to try one paint medium, it doesn’t make sense to play with another type of medium. I would recommend buying a student grade paint like prangs to see if you like watercoloring. I don’t think it’s wrong to spend a little bit to see if you like it first. It would be like if you’ve only done cooking and want to learn how to bake, you don’t just continue to cook to see if you want to try baking. No, you need to bake something to see if it’s for you. Just my two cents as someone who dabbles in all 3.

Even if you get a sewing machine, there's going to be times when you're going to have to hand sew. Just keep hand-sewing as your barrier to entry. Sure, it's a time suck, but hand stitching can expand your skills in many other fiber arts. Basically, if you're not willing to be fussy about the details or the slow stuff- then purchasing a machine only because it goes faster doesn't mean you enjoy the craft. You might be better off paying a taylor to custom or alter your fiber goods.

As a quilter, I have learned over the years to cultivate my fabric stash to contain only the designers I enjoy working with. I still have some scraps from years past that I incorporate into current projects to use it up. Since consumers know well in advance the when certain fabrics will be delivered to shops, I’ve made a short list for 2025. I can be completely satisfied with what I own now, but I will also enjoy and use what I’ve allowed myself for the future.

Lots of good ideas in the comments, I've been writing down a ton! My favourite way to get out of a style rut is to try to recreate pinterest outfits I've saved with clothes and accessories I already have. What also helps when I don't really know what to put together, is the concept of "outfit recipes". Thank you for this discussion!

Why are we so pressed like these people are spending your hard earned cash to buy these things ? If that’s what they want to do, why do you care ? If you don’t like the products, don’t buy them 🤷🏽♀️ Like I’m actually confused by this whole video and the fact that you took time out of your life to record and edit this. You can’t get that time back.. you also unknowingly sent people to these creators (humans are nosey and that’s okay 😂) boosting their views & potential sales. The exact opposite of you want to happen. So what was the goal of this video ?

25:26 that amount of lip product is crazy to own because you can't use all of that within the time frame of it being open and the months to expiring. If she opened 30 of them in one month to try for 1 day then those 30 would be on the clock for how long they could be used, having touched her lips the potential for bacterial growth would be high and if you already used something like that you can't give it away to anyone thats just unhygienic.

I always only buy a small "beginner" kit too when I just start off any hobby. Gives me just enough feel if this new hobby is for me. If it isn't, then it's just a small amount of fee spent. If it is, I can upgrade with better supplies and investments later.

I love this message. Going into 2025, I have decided to do a low buy year. I have so much stuff - clothes, art supplies, books, dining wear, on and on - and I truly love all of it. However, I don't ENJOY all of it. That actually is where some of my depression and guilt and embarrassment comes from with owning so much of all this stuff. I managed to save less than half the amount of money I was supposed to in 2024 ($700 instead of $1,500). This was while still being frivolous, wasteful and undisciplined with money. I am on a low income, but I really am sick of feeling poor. I know I can do better. And one thing is to stop buying more of what I already have! I can honestly say that I'm excited to start a year of ENJOYING what I have ALREADY purchased! If I want a new book, I'm going to shop my bookshelf; if I want a new outfit, I'm going to ship my wardrobe (I have also started cycling my clothes based on seasons as we get extreme heat and extreme cold in different seasone, and this makes everything feel both new and familiar every time). I'm also having a sewing machine someone gifted me serviced so I can start fixing and even revamping my belongnings. I am also going to allow myself to go to workshops where I can learn new skills - for example, I know a lady who used to make shoes and have asked her to teach me so now she's looking at running classes! And art workshops and sewing lessons are also on my list for 2025. I used to invest in things and stuff, now I'm going to invest in educating myself with skills and meeting other like minded people! I don't know if I'll save more money this coming year, but I think I'll be building a better life ❤

Waking up early is only good if you LIKE to wake up early! I'm someone that wakes at 4:30am, lazes in bed until 5am and then I'm awake and beginning my morning. But that works for me because I'm an early bird, I naturally wake up with the sunrise. Most of my partners prefer to stay up until 2am and sleep until 9am. By 10pm I feel like a cranky toddler. Late nights dont work for me and early mornings don't work for them. Just go with what you feel ❤

I have always had what i feel is a sizeable makeup collection; my dad told me I had to get a job AS SOON AS I turned 15 or he would kick me out. I didn't have much of a social life, so the result was I had a fairly impressive amount of spending money for a high schooler. I did Ipsy for 3-4 years and am grateful in some ways- it's how ive collected most of my makeup brushes. But I moved abroad in 2022 into student housing for graduate school, and was determined to do at least the first six months with only two suitcases- a full-size and carry-on. I had to be so, so selective with the makeup I took with me, and then was too broke to buy new stuff afterwards. I do actively think about other products and miss some, and ive even cried after running out of a product that has been discontinued. It's been tough, but i also love a clutter free space and using what i have. I don't have tiktok, but i do still watch some smaller beauty youtubers to get my fix.

I think these videos are supposed to be asmr-ish, but I find all of those sounds irrationally annoying. 😖 I guess I'm not the target audience. On the other hand, we still have the mini fridge my son used in college, and I'm strongly considering using it for smelly produce like onions, because I'm sick of the whole refrigerator ending up smelly. The ice even picks up an odor no matter how well I bag those onions. And I have an ozone machine in there - even that doesn't get rid of it.

Hi! I am going to ask again for a video about collecting. Sorry if it has been done already. But this is a unique hobby in that, the product is the hobby itself in a way....there is a joke/saying that goes, you don't hoard your hobbies lol. But my collecting is not hoarding and I have thought of rules to keep my spending on collecting to a minimum. Please message me if you need ideas but I would love to hear your take on that whatever it may be Shawna. Thanks!!

Thank you for this video Shawna! I was one of those who commented about hobbies as a spending trap/there’s some degree of “pay to play” involved in almost all hobbies. Looking forward to your tips! On a personal note, I started swimming again this year and to avoid spending a bunch of money on swimsuits, goggles, bags, towels, etc., I am using an old swimsuit that still fits, old goggles that work just fine, and the rattiest of our bath towels and I just wash it right away. I asked for a gym bag for Christmas because that was an upgrade I “needed” (I didn’t have a bag that adequately separated things like my shower stuff, slides, and wet swimsuit etc.). You’ve been a huge help!!

I've made this comment before, and I'll have to make it again; the noises in these videos, the tearing, and squelching, and squaching, crunching, banging, clanging, etc., drive me up the wall. I know that I'm one of those people who has misophonia dialed-up quite high, but the noises in these videos make me want to flippin' start punching people! I know that some people find these kinds of videos -- and ASMR types of videos comforting, but they just make me almost instantaneously violent.

Thrifting is a great way to get started with a lot of material crafts like knitting. When I wanted to give it a try, I got yarn from the thrift store for a dollar and some needles for about three dollars. I wound up realizing it wasn't for me and was glad that I spent less than a fiver giving it a go. Another way I save money on hobbies is that I'm not allowed to have multiple projects going at once. I have to fully complete my last project before I'm allowed to buy any materials for the next.

I take on hobbies that take a lot of time. I wanted to go to the gym so I got a gym membership. Hired a trainer for 2 months to get myself on track. Now I do cardio and weight lift 5 times a week for 1.5/2 hours a day. All that upfront investment has lead to $45/month and all the time I’m working out, getting ready to work out or shower after is time I don’t have to spend money on other things. It’s also helped in 1,000 different ways. But that’s my tip, don’t start 10 hobbies, start one or two time consuming hobbies.

20:56 it should be also noted that Amazon affiliates takes commissions on the entire value of the cart, so e.g. if you buy the Ninja machine plus toilet paper or something else, the creator gets the commission on the entire order. So commissions can be potentially much higher, even for lower priced items.
