About the phone case thing - I wanted the fun of having my phone case be seasonal, so I bought a clear case and put together seasonal pictures/collages that I can print, cut out and then place inside my clear case so the picture shows on the back. I have them for christmas/winter, spring/summer, late summer, halloween, & november. It brings me a LOT of joy when it comes time to "change my phone case" and designing the pictures also acts as an outlet for creativity. Highly recommend if someone wants to feel seasonal without buying new crap. Even if someone isn't artsy they can just find cute phone sized pictures on Pinterest and print them out!

The idea of having cushions that you switch out every season is mind boggling to me. I live in an old house (built in the 1890s) and old houses have no storage so my cushions stay on my furniture all year round. The storage I do have is for blankets and duvets that need to be put away over summer and suitcases, vacuum cleaner, cleaning products and things like that. For stocking stuffers the only things I buy every single year (family tradition) are pez dispensers and refills and chocolate coins. In New Zealand some of these things are only available at Christmas time. My son has a pez dispenser collection. Not for the possible eventual value of them but because he loves them. I have had to stock up on my son's favourite body wash because it is only available from Lush at Christmas time. He has sensory issues so, if he loves something, I'll get it for him. It was over $100 NZD but, if you add up what you spend over a year, it's probably at least that. One of those will go into his stocking. I come from an Austrian family so we celebrate on Christmas Eve and The stockings get filled by Father Christmas and are there for them to open on Christmas morning. My kids are grown up now but they still get a stocking with pez, chocolate coins and a few bits and pieces that will be used and useful but also fun like card games.

NGL, I am a Native deodorant user and I always buy a few minis when they have a good scent. I ONLY use the minis for travel, so they thankfully normally last for several trips. They’re under the TSA limit (and I don’t need to debate the TSA about “paste versus liquids”) and definitely help keep the toilet kit light. This is also why the one Drunk Elephant item I still buy are the travel soap bars. I like that you can buy them separate from the case and then re-fill it.

I've never had an issue with deodorant, but then again, I come from Philly and TSA there honestly dgaf.
@SilverDragonJay2 ай бұрын
You shouldn't have to worry about TSA. The per item limit is 3.4 fluid oz or 100 ml. Most normal sized deodorants are under that limit. Cumulatively, It all must fit into a quart sized resealable bag. There are no limits on checked luggage. If you are checking a bag anyway, you might as well put all of the liquids, pastes, and aerosols in that, its not like you need them on the flight. If you are struggling to fit it all in a checked bag, then swap something unobjectionable, like a shirt, into your carry on. You might not need it during the flight, but there will be no question over if its allowed or not. The only pro to the minis, imo, is that they take up less space which is valuable on a flight. Especially so when you aren't paying for checked luggage but your normal sized deodorant puts you over the 1 quart limit. doubly so considering how much empty space is in most tubes of deodorant.

I'm so glad you mentioned the seasonal themed gifts. I am constantly looking at a cute mug or pair of socks for someone and thinking "But if I gift them this ON Christmas, they can't wear it/use it for another year! How dumb!". I try to choose things that either will be used up/they needed anyway OR are less outwardly "Christmas" themed. Now I only ever buy Christmas-themed items AFTER Christmas on discounts and only if I will them all throughout the year like ziploc bags, tissues (who cares if the box has a snowflake on it), and body wash/lotion. I get really excited when they mark down "seasonal" items that are plain white or red or something like that. This way I'm saving money because I'm buying things cheaper than the typical price but also that we will use year round.

I fear that holiday overconsumption may also pray on people with depression or mental struggles. A couple of years ago when I was struggling with an ED and starting to lose joy in life, I became super obsessed with holidays as a way to cope. I’ve always been a huge Christmas person. I get super excited and I love picking out gifts for people, decorating, and baking, but that year I felt like everything I did had to be Christmas-related for me to be happy. If I was living on my own and allowed to spend my money however I wanted, I probably would’ve ended up wasting all of it on Christmas stuff I don’t even have space for. It’s easy to end up in a shopping addiction (especially holiday-related) when you’re in a depressed state, especially since I was isolating myself and losing interest in my hobbies.

Something I miss from when I was a kid and had no real way to buy things unless I was given cash and taken to the store, is how common it was to customize things. Using legos, stickers, old scrapbook paper, markers, keychains, beads, safety pins, bottle caps, etc. there are loads of ways to swap things out and make them seasonal with stuff you already own! I know someone already mentioned the clear phone case method (decorating behind the case), but this can be applied to notebooks, reusable bottles, backpacks/bags, etc! There’s also a special kind of uniqueness and self-satisfaction you get from the process that I think is missed when purely purchasing new things.

This year was my first Christmas in my new home and I wanted to recreate the magic I felt during childhood. We made a budget and stuck to it. I’m lucky that our budget can be larger than most, so I was able to purchase high quality goods that will last forever. We were particularly fussy with our artificial greenery. With the environmental impact, I didn’t want to risk not being 100% happy with the way something looked and potentially wanting to get rid of it in the next 25+ years. Growing up my mother and extended family always had lots of handmade European wooden and blown glass decorations. The quality and longevity is so much better than things from the big box stores. This year, I bought a few of these things new, but purchased the majority of the items as vintage goods from eBay sellers. I’ve seen some creators publicize thrifting or shopping secondhand for decorations, but that option still largely goes unnoticed. As for stocking stuffers, I can’t stand them. In college, I started asking my parents to purchase no more than three gifts per purchase (using the wise men as justification for the rule) largely to deal with the stocking stuffer issue. Things like hot chocolate or specific skin care items I know I routinely use and will need to replace can be good options, but almost everything else ends up shoved in a closet or thrown away.

How do you tell them that giving a pile of gifts isn't saying "I love you and care about you" when they know you've been trying to downsize your stuff and control your spending for several years now. How to have this conversation without sabotaging relationships and being a buzzkill.

i would argue that there is always financial ramifications to buying junk just for fun. even if you make a lot of money or have a lot in savings, every unnecessary purchase affects when you retire, how much money you have when you retire, how much money you leave to your children, etc. the amount of money coming in as income is finite, and so purchases will always diminish your stores of money.
@toomanynotes12 ай бұрын
Yep, and then you’re leaving behind all of your “fun” purchases for your family or benefactors to deal with once you’re gone. None of the things shown in these videos are going to increase in value over time. A few objects might end up being special to someone else due to memories tied to them, but most of it is just trendy holiday junk. Many of us have/had a family member that collected too much nonsense and they often end up being a bit of a family joke. This isn’t the legacy we should leave behind.

Her craft supplies were especially daunting. It was challenging to figure out what was worth keeping, donating, recycling, or tossing.

I have had a real in-depth introspective experience with myself when it comes to spending. Things I do to try and save money. Decor: *Disclaimer I still live with my parents, but I do help my mom the most when it comes to decor* Things I have collected over time and rotate through the seasons. If I can make one thing that can be used for a long time and at a lower cost I will. I had to make a wreath back in high school for a project. So it’s a pretty spring/summer faux wreath that comes out every year. My sister and I made a x-mas and a fall wreath + cornucopia (from the same items). This was done over time, not all at once and with sales and coupons. Food: I have few things that I would request name brand. Otherwise I always go and try the generic. Candles: Only cause this was brought up in the video. All candles I have are gifted to me and scents I enjoy. We have wax melts in different areas of the house that we use instead. The scents are easily interchangeable, don’t cost a lot (depending on where from), and last for a long time. We use them until there is literally no more scent. We don’t use room sprays, plug in sprays, or anything else scented really because 3 of us have asthma. Choosing lighter scents and being intentional about the use. And also- the needing to buy “minis” is crazy. We have the same refillables that get used and once we re-empty it, they get cleaned and dried properly to prevent mold and reuse it

What gets me the most with these sort of tiktoks is the lack of discernment. The "its so cute/yummy/on discount that I can't choose so let's buy everything." It was hard but I managed to cultivate the habit that is I can't choose one of something, then I don't need any of it and leave it on the shelf or hanger. I used to have a Christmas bauble , dare I say, addiction. I sold quite a bit off when I moved and now I only buy when the desire for it burns white hot. Even then I will wait about a month to make sure. I have two German nutcrackers (purchased two years apart), one of which has lost half his mustache during the move, but I still display him. Instead of buying two cheap imitations, I would rather buy one quality one from its country of origin.

Shawna, I want to thank you for what you are doing with your channel. I have really been enjoying your videos for awhile and I appreciate that you point out how the consumerism we are seeing tricks our mind to think it's normal. Your perspective is genuine and authentic and doesn't feel like you are just telling people not to be excessive, but you are giving people reasons why to be & how to be mindful of our purchases. Even if we know it's excessive, the more we see it, the more we subconsciously engrain the idea that it's normal to shop like this. So thanks for doing your part to combat this. A story to share: I was recently at TJ Maxx and I saw a plastic jar of vanilla shower bombs. My mind thought it was a necessity to purchase - the perfect thing I needed (yet was not looking for...). I thought: "It would look so cute in my bathroom!" "Guests would love them!" "I would feel so fancy!" "Vanilla is my favorite..." etc. This jar of them looked like more of a necessity, than a ridiculous impulse buy. As I was considering, I heard YOUR voice in my head simply say "You DON'T need this." And that was all I needed to put it down and walk away. Ha. Then, I was laughing at the fact that I had thought it was necessary. Also, I have had a shower bomb that was gifted to me sitting next to my shower for weeks and I have never felt inclined to use it. Nothing about it was something I needed or was useful in any way. It's almost like seeing the product suddenly made me feel like I could *feel* like one of the people on TikTok, even though that is not who I strive to be. I think the feeling of assumed "ease and abundance" that these over-consumers portray is what gives us the urge to go out and buy things. I know it's a small example, but I appreciate that you are reminding us in a sea of shopping influence, that people can find peace in refraining from buying.
