Coming of age for me meant listening to this haunting love song while trapped inside a closet, whose door was slowly being pried open during this tumultuous awakening in America, circa 1969. Now, as I listen once again, the same angst returns: will I ever be permitted to love and be loved?

This is a delightful folk song, and I remember it well as a young guy in the sixties. To appreciate the little things, to live and laugh and enjoy special moments is something we all experience. Although I focus on the longer view, not the fleeting moments, they are cherished even more when we see God’s grace, and how it revealed itself to us over our lives. Now I am elderly, and I have seen the good and the bad, but the hand of God sustained me, and it will sustain you as well. God bless.

I was five and he was six We rode on horses made of sticks He wore black and I wore white He would always win the fight Bang bang, he shot me down Bang bang, I hit the ground Bang bang, that awful sound Bang bang, my baby shot me down Seasons came and changed the time When I grew up, I called him mine He would always laugh and say "Remember when we used to play?" Bang bang, I shot you down Bang bang, you hit the ground Bang bang, that awful sound Bang bang, I used to shoot you down Music played and people sang Just for me, the church bells rang Now he's gone, I don't know why Until this day, sometimes I cry He didn't even say goodbye He didn't take the time to lie Bang bang, he shot me down Bang bang, I hit the ground Bang bang, that awful sound Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Those were the beautiful times where music was true, those were the beautiful times before wokeness strangled our soul's.
