Leave it to Soul Brother #1 to make a single funky little minute and a half riff into an industry. This exact riff became the Dartells' #11 hit "Hot Pastrami" and then Joey Dee and the Starliters' #36 hit "Hot Pastrami With Mashed Potatoes." Even James Brown's sax player, J. C. Davis, fashioned a release on Chess called "The Chicken Scratch" using the same riff. And, doggone it, he couldn't put his name on any of these records.
