In the picture above Tallis looks like the Jim Morrison of his time. Beautiful. It is a good portrait - looks ALIVE.

Fun musique to have on when lounging around, cooking, having drinks, in a bubble bath, playing a card game in full 18th C costumes & wigs. You know whatever activity where elegance and joy is the raison d'etre! Much light fun.

Such genius, not heard often enough the past centuries, much like Heinrich Schutz who is immortal as a music maker. But too rarely heard. Gabriieli canzone for brass chorales live forever, in my inner ear. Why are all these so neglected, compared to literature by Shakespeare from the same era, and who is overperformed?
Created by the Father. Other instruments are too, but not so directly.

Sadly this upload skips the Sequentia, possibly because of its monophonic rendition of the Dies Irae that goes on for 6-7 minutes and stands out a bit in the middle of all the polyphonic bliss. But in doing so, it also skips the last two minutes of it, the Pie Jesu Domine, that is the best 2 minutes of music ever composed and I'm not joking. Anyone who enjoyed the rest of this masterpiece will be blown away by that piece.

I keep returning to this hallowed collection of some of the finest Christian music. The beautiful harmonies produced by these strong heavenly voices must have been inspired by God Himself. It caresses the soul and gives us profound calm in times of great turbulence. Stay strong brothers and sisters for we can weather any storm through Faith.

Despite the age of the recording THIS is how Morley would have been heard in his lifetime. Shakespeare, a friend from a similar provincial background, often used Morley madrigals where appropriate in his plays, sometimes between scene changes when his actor group performed in country houses during plague outbreaks in London.

What are they saying?
@alexjbennett10178 ай бұрын
They are saying words from the Mass, a Catholic religious service. The words are essentially prayers to God. At this time, Catholic religious services were conducted in Latin. The priest would say the words, and the choir would sing the words. Only important prayers were sung: the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnes Dei. You can google these names for the English translations. They are all pretty short. It takes them a few seconds at least to get through each word.
