Do you feel any handling differences between alloy and carbon? That might attributed to stiffness and lighter frame?
@PentlandYeti Жыл бұрын
The carbon frame does feel a little stiffer but it's very hard to tell when you've changed bikes because it could be the design of the frame. I doubt there is much difference to be honest but it would be interesting to try the alloy version of the Nukeproof Mega as a direct comparison.

"Awhh, it's wet!" :-D 4:48 - 7:71 looks like a fun way to experience traversing terrain and covering distance on less established tracks in the Pentlands, it's pushing me towards getting an XC hardtail rather than a gravel bike :-)
@arnopr2 жыл бұрын
Nice! Trying to decide what flavour of bike to get to enjoy the Pentlands after moving close (Bilston), perhaps you can advise. Athletic and want to go fast covering lots of distance ranging around the Pentlands on hour-long to day-long rides, including the less travelled (by me anyway) reaches, e.g. stretching out south. Both for fitness, to explore, and enjoy being out. Not specifically looking to tackle gnarly trails, tricky technical terrain etc. so already veering away from trail hardtails like Vitus Sentier, and even the recent slew of XC bikes with slacker than traditional geometry. Considering a Giant XTC SLR 29, which is more traditional XC geo (apparently), thinking it'll give me more speed. But if I can tackle the terrain I want to tackle with a gravel bike like this, that's tempting, as I'd enjoy more direct feel without suspension, lighter weight, faster, more aggressive riding. Also gearing will allow me to go faster on smooth paths whereas even upgrading front chain ring to max clearance on XC bike (e.g. 36T on the Giant XTC SLR 29) may frustrate due to spinning out. A concern on the gravel bike side is max tyre clearance typically not that big. For comparison, I ride a 700C x 38mm on a Koga World Traveller frame with Alfine 8 hub gear & belt drive. Can tackle some easy trails fine, but uphill on the main rocky path from Castlelaw, forget it (maybe problem as much geometry as tyres). What do you reckon?
@arnopr2 жыл бұрын
For example, what about the terrain you tackle between 4:54 and 8:47 in your Pentlands mtb Vlog Black Hill video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpm7XnaFrMl4qLc Would that be doable on your gravel bike, out of bounds entirely, awkward, or simply a lot slower?
@PentlandYeti2 жыл бұрын
By the sounds of it, a gravel bike would be your best option. Most all the trails in the Pentlands can be done on a gravel bike but the efficiency of them when on tarmac or hardpack farm/forest roads makes them a much better choice if you're doing higher milage days or exploring. I chose the Whyte Friston because the geometry was a little slacker and longer than others which suited me as it was more similar to the mtb geometry I was used to. It has good trye clearance too. I put a smaller chainring on the front (40t or 38t I think) to get me up the steeper Pentlands trails and it works well for me. As for the Black Hill summit singletrack... you could do that on a gravel bike but it would be quite challenging.

Love watching your videos well shot and explained. I am a “newbie” on the MTB but as I’m from Edinburgh I have taken to the Pentlands on my day off and love it. I usually start at Bonaly Primary school and head up to the Torduff then Clubidean reservoirs then head up to the top of Maidens Cleugh before descending to the Glencorse Reservoir, I then head up past the Loganlea res’ before going through the valley and ending up at the gate before the steep road hill, I hang a right at the bottom past Harlaw res’ and then continue back to Bonaly to complete my loop. I feel as a beginner it marries with my capabilities with a few steep climbs and a few nice decents. Could you recommend any other routes that would suit my level? I use OS maps to check terrain etc but you can’t beat local knowledge Many thanks 👍
@PentlandYeti3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for the feedback. Glad you're discovered mountain biking up there because it's a great way to explore the hills. That route you described I would call the 'classic' Pentlands route and it's a great route to do, especially through winter as the paths are hardpacked. If you take the steep singletrack on your right after the stream crossing in the valley after Loganlea, there's a really good descent which takes you to Blacksprings on the South side of Harlaw Res. There's nothing too technical or steep but it's a great descent 👍🏼

@@PentlandYeti Thanks Bro👍 I think I know where you mean, is the turning on right before wooden bridge? I’ll probably struggle going up but I’ll keep trying till I manage it (took me 3 goes to climb up hill to Maidens Cleugh without getting off). Keep up the good work pal 👍

@@PentlandYeti Well I “tried” the Blackhill full summit climb ( far more pushing than cycling!! and a few superlatives shouted at the Hill) I am not going to lie, the 2 descents were a huge challenge and probably way beyond my skill level at the moment, the first one was single track rut through the heather with some deep troughs as you know to catch you out. The 2nd from the Stile was also scary with plenty of rocks and dips to catch you out, thankfully I managed to stay on the bike. My respect for yourself has now gone COSMIC! as you make it look easy, which it certainly isn’t and I definitely realised yesterday that I am 53yrs old and not 23. I think the biggest error I made yesterday was cycling from home (Lower Granton Road,Edinburgh) up to the Pentlands which probably sapped some much needed energy from me. I usually drive up and park on Bonaly Rd and I will definitely be reverting back to this in the future. Keep up the excellent work pal and keep posting the videos (maybe mention in the last few seconds “John, this is maybe not for you” 😂 that way I won’t become deluded)
