Pollen Ainne... I haven't played any game, but watching part of it from a Twitch stream made me interested in one thing: Aerith. This person stuck in my brain, it really took just a few moments for me to like her. I haven't played it but I'm in love with Aerith. I also researched Tifa for being the most popular, but it's not the same for me. Thanks to your videos I now know that the path I would take would be with Aerith. No regrets. Looking forward and moving forward. In the end it's about how I connected with this story, so it's my decision, right? Thank you so much!!

Nobody will ever read this, but it's important to note that Cloud's personality in Acts 1 and 2 of the OG is so similar to 'revived' Cloud in Act 3 that discussion of any differences is essentially academic. Revived Cloud is slightly less cocky, and a bit more self-effacing, but the Cloud we see in Acts 1 + 2 is, for all intents and purposes, 'true Cloud.' When people talk about Aerith loving Cloud because she thinks he's Zack, or is too similar to Zack, it's an enormous red flag that they don't understand two critical points: 1) Zack in the OG is basically a non-character - he has like 10 lines of dialogue in total. It isn't at all clear what he's like. His only purpose in the story is to serve as a model for Cloud to mimic (mostly in body language) and a driver for the '5 years ago' part of the plot. And 2) even in the OG, Aerith is very clear that, while she still thinks about Zack and wonders what happens to him, she has moved on (she is even more explicit about this in Remake and Rebirth, flat-out telling Cloud in the latter that she has fallen in love with him). Cloud's illness is defined by a) his obsession with Sephiroth, and inability to grasp the meaning of or avoid the Reunion (and thus hand Sephinova the black materia), and b) refusing to acknowledge the enormous gaps in his own memory. He isn't living Zack's life - he's just using Zack's existence as 'generic soldier first class' to prop up his battered ego and block confronting the horrors of having been Hojo's test subject. That's it. This makes narrative sense, since it would be disconcerting if, upon his retrieval from the lifestream, Cloud turned into a completely different character. The writers in the OG knew they couldn't do this - it would be like permakilling the hero, and inserting a doppelganger into his place. So Cloud mostly just is who he is throughout the tale, albeit with some slight tweaks. Cloud throughout the story is the 'real' Cloud. He's just slightly confused about his past and motives for 2/3rds of the story. Thus, even in the OG (and certainly in Remake/Rebirth), the person that Aerith is falling for is Cloud - not 'Zack' or 'Cloud's interpretation of Zack.'

Hints have been dropped since Remake that Cloud and Aerith will meet again. One of the most telling actually comes in an exchange between Cloud, Tifa and Leslie (of all people). When Tifa hands Leslie's fallen necklace back to him following the Anzu fight, we see clearly that it is a silver clasp with a distinct gold flower at the center - one of Aerith's flowers. Tifa then says "it's a symbol of Reunion - *a sign that you will meet again."* She's talking to Leslie in this moment, but the presence of the flower makes it pretty clear that Aerith is actually the (unintentional for Tifa) subject. The flower - *Aerith's flower* - isn't a symbol of hope or romance or friendship, but return. That's critical. And it comes up again and again in this way. The fact of the matter is, now that *some* Aerith is dead (whichever Aerith that Cloud didn't save), the others are as good as bulletproof. This is because any further Aerith 'kills' risk turning her death into a meme. Think about it: you have the moment in 1997 that many players (not me, but whatever) regard as the greatest five minutes in video game history; and now you have a drawn-out 90 minute death sequence in Rebirth. Are they really doing to go and kill the other (two, though there may be more) surviving Aeriths in the other timelines? Set aside your inner Clerith for a second and just think about how stupid that would be from a raw A-B-C storytelling perspective - it would turn any poignancy associated with Aerith's demise into a laughing stock. Sephiroth: "How many Aeriths do you want me to kill?" SquareEnix: "ALL THE AERITHS." Nah, I think she's coming back, and that true canon will be her and Cloud. Think about how long he's been looking for her - he spends all of Advent Children thinking about her; he travels to Final Fantasy Tactics searching for her; he goes to Kingdom Hearts chasing her. Cloud is meant to be with Aerith.

I hope you don't mind me re-visiting this particular topic, even though it's been years. So I am in agreement with the premise of the video that Cloud and Tifa were not close friends in childhood, which was revealed in the Lifestream. But what may be overlooked from Pollen's interpretation of the sequence is how Tifa played no small part in keeping up the appearance of being 'childhood friends' with Cloud until the Lifestream showed otherwise. Though to be fair, Pollen (and some commenters) made some the same points I'm going to make in the Zacloud Fallacy video. I want to try and be clear with my language in making the following claims. I don't think Tifa was intentionally deceiving Cloud for her own ends; this isn't a case of her lying to him about their relationship as kids when she knew that the reality was quite different. This feels more like her... how do I put this... imagining herself to be closer to Cloud as children than the actual reality after The Promise she got from him (about him being a SOLDIER and saving her if she ever was in danger)... and believing what she tells herself on the subject. To try and put this in as neutral a term as possible, she misled Cloud about the nature of their childhood relationship and she didn't even know she was misleading him. In hindsight, I don't think enough has been made of her (unintentional) deception or this keeping up the appearance of 'childhood friends', because it could explain why Cloud and Tifa's relationship feels so tense sometimes in the game(s) -- and in a bad way. Their desire to have banter and small talk that resemble close childhood friends FAR outpaces their actual ability to do so. It's not just a matter of them being shy and introverted (though that was certainly a factor); even if they weren't, they know so little about each other that there are very few common memories of childhood that could emotionally connect them in a good way. The only old memory I could think of that wasn't a negative experience was The Promise, which is doing a ton of work in convincing both that they had a significant and meaningfully positive relationship growing up. If you are just looking at their common memories before the start of the game, they include what Sephiroth did at Nibelheim (which is obviously scarring to the both of them) and their climb up Mount Nibel (which is also a bad experience for the both of them). The fact that Tifa unintentionally misled Cloud, in making him think he's her childhood friend, could also explain why their relationship continues to be rocky after the OG, AC, DoC and perhaps beyond. Even if you take away the grief and depression that comes from Aerith's death (which was something that obviously weighed heavily on Cloud), by Case of Tifa Cloud knows full well that he was living with a woman who passed herself off as his close childhood friend when she was only his acquaintance/neighbour in the village. I dunno, even if one takes the wider context or the legitimately good reasons why she did so (like her looking out for Cloud when she sees that he isn't alright when they first met and that his memories are jumbled), that just feels like a major betrayal of trust that will likely take years and years and years to rebuild (if at all). Cloud will obviously have his good days with her, but in the back of his mind he will always wonder what else she is keeping from him, what else she might not remember clearly that would come back to haunt them, or what else she isn't telling him. He still cares for her and doesn't wish ill on her, but there will always be that undercurrent of suspicion on his end. If you'd allow me to quote myself from a different video: 'That's why I think he [Cloud] continued to long for Aerith, at the end of OG and through to Advent Children. Things are far less complicated with Aerith. Cloud knows where he stands with her and vice versa'. I wonder if the Remake Trilogy is going to focus on Tifa's role in the misleading impression that she was childhood friends with Cloud, the consequences that come from keeping up that appearance, and her having to answer for it in some shape or form. In the OG, Cloud admits that he was living in an illusion of his own making. But now that I really think about it with the evidence I have on hand, he wasn't the only one... and that other person never had to come to terms on the matter.

Cloud NEVER blamed Tifa and neither have I. It was never Tifa's fault, and neither is it the fault of the other kids. I think people are too easy to lay blame, but no one person is responsible for someone else. Tifa was never Cloud's keeper. She was not responsible of understanding his thoughts and feelings. She was just a kid herself. However, the reason why I have included this in my video is because we are talking about Cloud's psyche and how Aerith's pushy nature would actually open him up more instead of Tifa's reserved nature. Because altho no one is to blame, it all boils down to compatibility and that people like Cloud need people like Aerith and vice versa.

@@PollenAinne I actually agree at some level! Cloud didn't blame Tifa for the consequences that came from her passing herself off as his childhood friend when she wasn't. He probably understood, even appreciated, why she did what she did, and he probably didn't hold it against her when she didn't reveal to him her memories of Nibelheim or his not being a SOLDIER (at least in the OG). I cannot stress enough how Tifa isn't trying to hurt Cloud when she was withholding important things from him; she earnestly thought she was doing what was best for him and his interest. I think it's just a matter of understanding someone's actions on an intellectual level but not doing the same at an emotional level. It's forgiving someone when they said 'I did what I had to do', but not forgetting. I think that's where Cloud is with Tifa by the end of OG. He trusts her enough on a few things later on, like taking care of Denzel or even when they worked together to get his delivery service up and running. But there are other things he doesn't trust her with, like his guilt and depression that comes from thinking about Aerith and her death. You are right- Tifa isn't Cloud's keeper when they were children and she shouldn't be expected to be that.... but that doesn't apply as well when they met as adults, when she took him into her care and could not share that burden with anyone else. That was the role she chose to assume when she gave herself the job to not only nurse him back to health but to also help sort his memories out. She did that for various reasons, from her attraction to him to a desire to hold onto a piece of her past life in Nibelheim, but the fact she took him in at her own expense is to her credit! But this responsibility also comes with it a ton of difficult questions as to when they need to have some really hard conversations about Cloud's memories. And whatever choices Tifa makes in either revealing or not revealing something (and they are all hard choices with no good or easy answers), they will be seen in a less positive light in comparison to how Aerith was far more capable of getting to the bottom of Cloud's memory problems. I guess 'suspicion' is too strong a word for me to describe what Cloud could feel towards Tifa by the end of OG. Maybe something with a little less edge like 'wary' or 'guarded' is more applicable. And I think that's a perfectly reasonable response from Cloud! He will still care about Tifa, but it's not the same as loving her the way she wants him to. I am sympathetic to the premise that shy and reserved people will have a hard time communicating with one another, but I don't want to overstate it. It's a bit of a stretch, but recall Cloud's conversation with Vincent in Advent Children. Vincent is nobody's idea of an extrovert, but their interactions are pretty smooth with them sharing notes about Kadaj, Geostigma and Jenova. It's alot of exposition... but then Cloud asks Vincent if he believes that sins can be forgiven. It's a moment of emotional connection because Vincent was in a similar situation to Cloud with Lucretia. Vincent says he never tried [to forgive himself], but it's enough for Cloud to start the slow process of forgiving himself. This is an example of two introverted and reserved characters talking with one another and one having something of an emotional revelation for the better. No, Vincent isn't a love interest to Cloud, but I can't help but ask why a quiet character like him is able to capably communicate with Cloud and have that 'can sins be forgiven' moment while Cloud's conversations with Tifa (another quiet and reserved character) is fraught with tension and can feel like they're going nowhere. On the one hand, Vincent had more to offer with his knowledge of Jenova, Geostigma and Kadaj. There's also the parallel between Cloud and Aerith with Vincent and Lucretia. But just as importantly? Cloud can take Vincent at his word because Vincent never tried presenting himself as someone or something that he wasn't. Tifa did, and she didn't even know she did until late into the OG (and probably the Remake trilogy too). That's the difference. Compatibility of personalities obviously plays a role in how characters can get along. But it's not the only factor. Character history with one another - good, bad, or lack thereof - plays a major role in that too.

@@ALostExplorer I will try to make this as brief as possible... 1) Good intentions aren't everything. Parents can also have good intentions for their kids and end up destroying their entire childhood. Friends can do this too, they can betray friends even with the best intentions. People aren't perfect so what we think is best isn't necessarily true. I don't think anyone is blaming Tifa for anything because we all know that in her heart she was doing her best to do the right thing. It still wasnt the best for Cloud. Also when it comes to good intentions, Aerith is just as guilty as Tifa. She didnt want to burden Cloud as well as the rest of the team and hence she took on the responsibily by herself and left Cloud with a broken heart. Not the best for Cloud either. 2) Compatibility is EVERYTHING. I think you might be misunderstanding what compatibility means. It's not about having an introvert paired to an extrovert, definitely not. In fact two introverts might be more compatible. In the case of Cloud and Tifa, what makes them incompatible is Cloud's defense machanism which makes him shut down instead of share his thoughts and feelings and Tifa's "nice girl" attitude, emotional sensitivity, and indicisiveness. Cloud is not an easy guy to love. You can count on him in a battle but he is a huge burden in a relationship when it comes to emotions. Aerith said it herself, Cloud has a fragile heart. And Tifa just can't hack it when he goes into his phases. They are good when he is at his best behaviour but when the going gets tough, they fall apart. And I would like to emphasize that this isnt Tifa's fault. She is not lacking or anything of the sort, she's just not compatible with Cloud as a lover. Period.

@@PollenAinne FWIW I don’t think our arguments are in conflict with one another. Both Cloud and Tifa can be incompatible personality-wise (which I agree with completely!) AND make choices that make it harder for them to get along romantically. Maybe one flows from the other or vice versa but they can both be true.

Decisions definitely play a part, I am just more inclined to believe that certain decisions people make are already interwoven to their personalities and their past decisions they made. Altho it is true that at times we can break out of the mold and make surprising decisions that are opposite of what we would usually do. People can change for sure. But to expect this of partners is a huge rabbit hole a person should always try to avoid because the likelihood is you will just end up suffering.

I absolutely love your videos regarding Cloud and Aerith. Many people still wish to ship Cloud with Tifa, and that is okay if that is what they want to do. But I truly believe, just like you do, Cloud truly loves Aerith and she loves him. Cloud never loved anyone before and always pushed people away and put up his defenses, never letting anybody in. Being rejected and never fitting in as he grew up, he formed a protective barrier that kept people out. Tifa is also outside that barrier with Avalanche and everyone else. Aerith alone broke those barriers and saw the true Cloud.... a terrified, guarded, emotionally wounded troubled soul who just wanted to be accepted and loved like everyone else. Those that he grew up around always rejected him and made him feel like he was never wanted, just like it was depicted with Tifa and Avalanche rejecting him again and he didn't care because that is what he was used to. Aerith, being a powerful empath and a genuinely good hearted person, saw this in Cloud. She did not do this out of pity and sympathy, but she saw the person underneath all of those protective layers and wanted to love him and make him feel accepted and that he mattered to her just being who he was. He did not have to join SOLDIER or go out of the way to impress her. She loved him for him. I will always believe this to be the true canon. The Final Fantasy VII remake is a love story between cloud and aerith.

I one hundred percent agree with this. The dialogue between Cloud and Tifa is almost always focused on events rather than personality - Aerith is constantly asking Cloud about his feelings, his past, and pushing him to try to do good; Tifa almost entirely avoids discussing Cloud's state-of-mind. While much of their dialogue is flirtatious, it doesn't ever approach any kind of emotional resonance like with Cloud and Aerith. In a nutshell, both Cloud and Tifa treat each other like 10-year-olds swinging their arms awkwardly and avoiding eye contact - it's very juvenile and unimpressive; Tifa either doesn't want to know what makes Cloud tick, or she doesn't care, and her most volatile reactions in his presences are spurred by jealousy... by being possessive. Cloud, she believes, rightfully *belongs* to her, even if she would be incapable or unwilling to explain why. At least Jessie respects Cloud as a man of action and few words; even if she isn't with Cloud long enough to recognize how troubled he is, she 'gets' the persona he is attempting to portray. Tifa doesn't even rise to this level.

I don't think Aerith's & Cloud's relationship is complicit. In the real world Zack have already died 5yrs ago so someday Aerith would have to move on with her life & b happy again & shud stop grieving & mourning in Zack's memory bcoz that wud'nt make him come back. So Aerith's & Cloud's special bond is valid & the feeling's they have for each other wud b accepted by other's too.

Even with Rebirth out now, I still see Clerith as the one that makes most sense. Tifa doesn't really understand Cloud, which is why she ends up fighting with him more. Aerith, on the other hand, does. That's what makes Cloud open up.

This aged well since the new game. I think he likes both girls, but for too long people have been biased against Clerith since Remake came out. He definitely liked Aerith. It was a new developing love that we got to follow along the way. And its had nothing to do with being possessed by Zack's feelings or whatever cope that is. People should consider just how much that would undermine the impact of the story and her loss for a Cloud - if true. A long lasting legacy of this game is Aerith's loss. Why spend the time writing those songs (Hollow & NPTK) only to be like...oh, nevermind. All of his strong feelings towards Aerith were cause he had Zack's feelings for her somehow. It just strips away depth just so people can comfortably slot them into neat couples when it's more complicated than that.

Exactly. And Aerith even confirms that OG Cloud fell in love with her. It bothers me whenever people try using the Zack excuse. Yes, he has his memories and took on his mannerisms. However, Cloud is still his own person. It's quite clear that the feelings him and Aerith have for each other are very real. I also think that's why SE made it a point to confirm that Aerith isn't in love with Zack anymore. She grew to love the real cloud, and the real Cloud fell in love with Aerith. I do believe Cloud crushed on Tifa as well, but I always felt like it was more of a high school crush than an actual feeling of love, personally.

I love coming in here 3 years later post Rebirth, and being SO glad to find a video essay about this because of just how prevelant the "Cloud is actually Zack/Cloud absorbed Zack's memories so that's why he loves Aerith" arguments have been on just about every single video I've clicked on talking about Aerith or Cloud to any extent. I'm new to the fandom too (just started with OG FFVII about 2-3 weeks ago and I've already wound up finishing it, Remake, and Crisis Core and am now onto Rebirth) and it's been quite the ride seeing just how much hate and misconceptions are out there about these two and the overall plot of the story. I still find it so baffling how anyone could possibly misinterpret the scenes in the OG when it's so clearly spelled out for them as to what happened by Cloud himself. The storytelling in this series is absolutely incredible!! And the relationship between Cloud and Aerith one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen crafted in media. They really do compliment each other extremely well while also being wholely uplifting and encouraging of the other. It's sad to see people so commonly write off their complexity and strength as characters because of a ship they want. Not only is it insulting to their character arcs and their development over the course of the games, but it's also an insult to the overall story plot. Thank you for uploading this and giving me a good dose of "thank god I'm not the only one who thinks that argument is absurd" lmao

Cloud adopted Zack's memories as his own. That is, he thinks that everything that happened to Zack happened to him. Hence the feelings for Aerith.

sorry but that is wrong. Cloud explained it in the game itself. yes, he did superimpose himself on Zack in the Nibelheim incident, but the largest chunk of his SOLDIER persona was from Tifa who he met at the train station. His ego was made because of these memories, but his feelings were always his own.

Cloud does not know Aerith when they first met. If Cloud had feelings for Aerith because of Zack's memory, how could he not even find Aerith familiar?

Enough of making us suffer with moments of almost a kiss, almost a confession... please!!

This was an amazing video , thank you for your effort . Really looking forward to your assessment of the rebirth( especially I’m interested in so called tifa’s route, jealous cloud is something else ) . What I find fascinating about the second part of the remake trilogy is no matter what route you choose , it all leads back to aerith. Square enix needs to give us a duet between cloud and aerith as the theme song for the third part

Cloud being blunt to Aerith is not a good thing. You want him to be sweet like he is to Tifa to show love coming from him. Coming from a relationship where my ex was blunt, all I could hope for was he be sweet like Cloud is to Tifa.
