As a curly haired woman, who was born and raised in Australia from Italian parents, this cultural bias which considers curly hair as unattractive and inappropriate had me denying and straightening my hair for at least 20 years. When I went to live in Italy, and had some lady friends over my house, they accidentally noticed my curly hair after I had washed it. They were deeply surprised. One of them asked me 'is that your natural hair'? I nodded, somewhat embarrassed. After which, game changingly, she added 'but it's beautiful'! From then on, I never straightened my hair again, leaving it plush, curly and long. Skeeter looked much prettier with her natural curly hair. Prettier, fresher, more authentic.

I've seen this movie many times. But i still get confused. How does hilly have the power to fire her even though her mom is literally there ? And how she also had the power to put her mom in a nursing home ? Did i miss something ? I used to watch this movie on cable tv so it is a possibility maybe the cut out some scenes ?

I'm so confused.. I'm sure Minny had worked for Hilly for a long time, so I'm sure she must have seen many stormy days while at work. What did she do all those other times during a storm? If she was sneaking to use Hilly's bathroom, why would she all of a sudden decide to ask if she could go? Why not just sneak like she's been doing? Why would she even say anything to draw attention to it?... This scene came off as if Minny never worked at Hilly's house during a storm. And if she's okay with walking home in the rain, wouldn't it have been easier to just go to the bathroom outside than having to walk all the way home in the storm? This entire scene never made sense to me. It's kind of bad writing in the storyline. It just seems so strange that she all of a sudden asked to use the restroom... All I could think of during this scene is why is she asking? 😫 Like.. just do what you've done during other storms lol

Unfortunately there were people who thought that way. Years of conditioning were included in that. Thankfully, people thought otherwise.

I understand that during this time in the south, maids made about .75 an hour.

Miss Hilly Holbrook was only fixing up Skeeter because she saw her as a reflection on yourself. She wanted to take credit as an entertainer & a "hooker upper".

I didn't watch this movie so I guess I don't know what's going on but if she's the maid doesn't she need to go to the bathroom at some point?

So skeeter is the daughter of that white woman and a black man, curls doesn’t happen naturally in white people.

I was raised in the 60”s , we had a maid But we didn’t look at her as a maid . We loved her . I had five sisters and three brothers and my father felt my mother needed the help , he worked out of town all week . My mother treated her with respect as us kids did . Every house it seemed had a maid . We lived in the south . My father got transferred to the north so we had to say goodbye to our second mother (maid) us kids cried for many of days of not having her . I was blessed to have a mother that taught me it’s not the colored of a persons skin we’re all the same . It’s what is in their hearts that counts

The great Sissy Spacek, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Jessic Chastain, Viola Davis, Emma Stone... I mean, what a cast!! This movie should've won every single Oscar back in 2012 edition

I've always thought the actor for Stuart was the weak link in an otherwise stellar cast. His line delivery is just too stiff and monotone. Even the scene where he's angry and yelling is kinda painful to watch, because he's just shouting lines without any actual anger behind them.

I don't think colored women who are maids get to use their own bathroom and it's not acceptable.
