In 1976, City were promoted as they were 2nd and Bolton wee 4th. When 3 points for a win was introduced, Bolton fans pointed out had hat been the case in 76, they and not City would have been promoted.

If it had been 3 points for a win that season the results would have been different, teams used to play for a draw more under the old rules

Did Bristol City get relegated that season? They had a proud record of not losing at home to Liverpool in three seasons with at least two wins and managed at least one draw at Anfield. I can’t remember the result at Bristol in 77/78 ; the game at Liverpool was a draw. The game shown here was one of only four Liverpool lost in that season.

The Gordon Lee era was never really appreciated by some fans who still remembered the great Everton sides in the previous decade. This Everton side competed well in the FA Cup and finished with a European place in 1977-78. When Imre Varadi somehow missed an open goal late in the 6th round of the FA Cup when leading 2-1 v Man City in 1981, it spelled the end for Gordon Lee, a late equaliser for City saw them win the replay . Gerry Gow, here with Bristol, had joined City and scored at Goodison in the first game. Everton lost 9 of the 11 games left in 1980-81 dropped down the league table, and Gordon was sacked. Funnily Everton's No 10 here, was Mickey Walsh who had just joined from Blackpool in 1978, for a big fee. He had won goal of the season with Blackpool which had raised his profile He made no impact at Everton and was sold later that season, and replaced by Peter Eastoe a very underrated forward. Howard Kendall replaced Gordon Lee, in August 1981 and wrote himself into the tapestry of Everton's history

Amazing penalty kick....but look closely at a freeze frame...and the ball does cross the line first time after striking the crossbar.

I was there! I remember that both sides were in and around the relegation zone. Although I was a young kid at the time, it was the lowest attendance I had ever seen at Ashton Gate (less than 10K?) there were big gaps all over the east end. To make matters worse their scorer (Dick Plumb) was an ex-gas player

Very final game of the season at the Valley and Charlton had to avoid defeat against Bristol City to avoid relegation to the old Third Division. They won 2-1 but can you give me the goal times if you know them?

I do remember Herbie. The highlights of this game come from a video advertised in the match programme, this company only did Birmingham City matches so the commentator is a bit biased!

Remember this game distinctly. There was a guy behind me sitting in what is now the Brian Clough stand who moaned and slagged the team off throughout the game. Admit we had an off day but you still get behind the team but not this guy. He particularly had it in for Ian Wallace so when Wallace scored I thought he would pipe down. Nope it was now “Come on Lads” and what a star Wallace was. Typical Forest home fan of the 80’s. Think VAR might have been looking at Wallace’s goal for offside but hey it wasn’t pretty but got the job done 😂

I was at that game too, City were no mugs that season and Forest were our most difficult opponent at Ashton Gate. Forest were just so quick in movement and in thought, not sure how Clough and Taylor managed to achieve that but they were at their peak around then.

Wasn't personal, this was number 7 of 42 unbeaten by Forest. For the remainder of that season and the first 16 of the following no-one could. Also, thats a unique way of pronouncing Withe, very West Country.. Question to Tony Woodcock, were you upfront on your own? No i had Peter Withe!

This brings back so many memories. The tenacity of Gerry Gow, but also of Tom Ritchie whose workrate was extraordinary. Joe Royle gets his first goals of the season and Motson calls us Bristol a lot.

I don't think we appreciated at the time how lucky we were to see these games in the top flight, there was a 65-year gap before and it's been 40+ years since we dropped out so only four seasons in over a century!

Bristol view, have you got the away corresponding fixture for this season, it was the opening fixture at burden park, it was on match of the day as I remember and we won 2-1 I just want to see jimmy mann’s screamer again, I think it won goal of the month for august or was in the mix. Great memories though, thank you, they were calling us Bristol back in the 70’s obviously rovers were un heard of back then too 😆😆

I haven't ever seen a video of the reverse fixture, in the 70s there weren't so many games on TV, do you think it was televised? If it was I'll keep an eye out for it. We could do with someone like Jimmy Mann in midfield now, he had a great shot on him.

That fantastic Kennedy goal has replayed many times in my mind as I saw it from the Enclosure as a young teenager. City did well to live with what was a purring, gliding Liverpool side - one of their best ever - which the unmatched David Coleman said at the start “…has that usual solid dependable look about it…” An understatement ! A great time as a youngster to go to Ashton Gate.
