Thank you so much for including photos of my high school (Roy C Start). It doesn't exist anymore like that. And I too am crying. I was born in Florida in 1982 but I moved up here in 1985 and have been here since my memories existed. I really wish I wasn't crying now. 😢

I believe the wrecked bridge and ship are when in April of 1957 the ship broke loose from its moorings and crashed into the Fasset Street Bridge. As I have been told by my grandmother and mother: My grandmother, my mother (8 years old) and her sister, my aunt Robin (10 months old) were driving over the bridge to pick up my grandfather, who was just off work from the old Toledo Terminal Railroad. Both my grandmother, and mother told me that they were half way over the bridge, or maybe a little more than half-way, when people got out of their cars and were waving frantically for my grandmother to speed up. She claimed that she didn't know why they were doing that, but after she was the last car over the bridge to Fasset St., she pulled over, got out of the car, and saw what was happening. I don't claim it as fact, merely the story I was told several times when I was a young man in the mid to late 1970's. If 100% accurate, and they had not made it across, and the car fell into the Maumee River on a cold April day, I assume all 3 would have died, which means I never would have been born. To me, personally, I find this story interesting. I hope that you did, too.

All those road slowly built just to get to the donut shop. The decline from it's own success as the traffic became to great to get into it. A tale as old as time.

I’m surprised there weren’t any photos of the Toledo Scale Company, or Brondes Ford. My grandfather was a millwright for the Scale Company, my father worked the line, and my mother worked in the office. My dad went from there to Brondes as a salesman until 1983.

1954 to 1964, I lived in the Old West End as a small boy. Wonderful neighborhood to grow up in. It had a diverse make-up: Norwegian, German, East European and typical midwestern Americans, of course. Young families and elderly. I lived on the corner of Virginia and Maplewood. Just a few blocks from the Art Museum and Swayne Field Shopping Center ( W.T.Grant store). Went to Glenwood Elementary. Moved away when the freeway was built and cut into the neighborhood😢. Came back in 1972 for technical college downtown. Lived across from Art Museum in the Plaza Hotel. Things were much differentby then. But fond memories of Toledo.

Dad graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 and accepted a job as a salesman for the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. We lived on Prescott Street until 1950 when Dad was transferred to the Baltimore Branch. We returned to Toledo in 1952 and lived at 1655 Crestwood Road until 1954, then at 2458 Evans Street until 1957. After five years with the Cincinnati Branch, O-I brought Dad back to Toledo again for a year living at 4131 Sheraton Road in Ottawa Hills, then a final transfer to the Chicago Branch in 1963. I remember Longfellow School for kindergarten in 1953-1954, Nathan Hale Elementary School for grades 1, 2, and 3 in 1954-1957, then freshman high school year at Ottawa Hills High School in 1962-1963. My memories of Toledo are vivid and voluminous. It was a wonderful place for my childhood. The public schools were terrific. The video reminded me of when in 1956 my grandmother took me to see "Run for the Sun" at the Colony Theatre a great film with Richard Widmark, Jane Greer, and Trevor Howard. Toledo, you will always be a part of me. Thanks for the memories.

I love Toledo, and I love this video. But, to see the picture of the Edmund Fitzgerald sitting there was very eerie. My mother used to manage the Don’s drive-ins at all three locations that I knew of.

Churchills. I had a friend as a kid and he was ..well…from a family with more income lol. His mom used to take us to the grocery store and churchills was so nice compared to the store my parents had to shop at.

I grew up there. Went to Little Flower and Hawkins for grade school…Mctigue for JR high and Rogers HS. I haven’t been back in 20+ years. Got into medicine and settled down south. Maybe it’s time to go visit. The Magic shop photo drew me in…I went to school with the owners son. He was such a cool dude to hang with in high school. He introduced me to flash paper and a fake thumb lol! I can’t remember his name . Damn, hope he is doing well for himself.

We drive to Toledo from Indianapolis every so often to visit the art museum. It has a fine restaurant. I usually carry on long, sometimes heated conversations with the curators (in my head) about the choices they’ve made. No other art museum engages me in the same way. It’s always a great visit.
