This is amazing, has anyone worked out how to replicate soothe's sidechain function with this yet?

So would it be better just using All linear Eq, compressor, saturator Plugins in also mixing stage? Not only mastering
@jshstuff2 ай бұрын
if you’ve heavily compressed/clipped/limited an instrument or bus or your master, and it has become a sausage, or if you’re working with samples that are already sausages (like cymatics drums for example) only then do you really need linear phase. at the mixing stage before all the sounds combine to become really loud & high RMS, it doesn’t matter much if the phase gets screwed up in most situations. I personally use normal non-linear eq on all my individual tracks, but I use linear phase on instrument/drum groups as well as on the master. on the other hand, if I’m making a quieter song, like something at -10 LUFS or quieter, I find that this problem of phase shifting does not cause negative side effects. if effecting v loud audio signal, avoid FX which do phase smearing.

This can be done in Kontakt with scripting. Just need to capture the reduction envelope of a compressor, saturate, then apply the inverse of the compressor’s reduction to a gain. This has been possible for at least 2 decades. Nothing new.

what would happen if you use this linear phase on moderate level mixes instead of very loud tracks? thank you :)
@jshstuff3 ай бұрын
it’s probably fine either way on quiet mixes. it’s less important if you’re dealing with a quiet, low LUFS/RMS mix. preserving the phases is more valuable the closer your waveform gets to sitting consistently right at zero. because if the waveform is constantly redlining, going waaaay up near zero like a square wave does, then the effect of this phase smearing would be dramatic and prolonged. whereas if you check out your waveform in a visualizer, and the loudest part of your song only goes up near zero every now and then - maybe just for some kick/snare hits, then if the phases get screwed up, those problematic peaks over zero would only really be introduced at those moments when the kick/snare hit. does that make sense?

anybody know if you can do this (linear phase mode) with abletons multiband compressor? or fab filter’s

I don’t use any of the plugins described in the video how would this still apply to my mixes? I do use Compression, Limiting and Clipping, is there anything I’m missing other than that?

dude I'm not even kidding, the way you added those little pink/purple overlays with text saying things like "soon it gets better" and so on actually gave me a better sense of understanding which parts to pay attention to more. It's so easy while watching KZbin tutorials to sort of "drift off" forgetting why you even started watching because so many things are being mentioned leading up to making the final point that it actually helps to just know kind of like "okay we're getting there thanks for letting me know", and it even made me pay more attention somehow to the things you were explaining besides the actual linear phase mode being activated. And for those wondering "well what can I do about pre-ringing?" Consolidate all your tracks into audio tracks and then just cut it out. That's what Skrillex does.
@jshstuff4 ай бұрын
good to know. the only other guy who ever commented on those transition things said it was dumb and I shouldn’t do it because it makes it seem like I’m not confident in what I’m saying. I think I put it there because I wanted to keep things quick but also give a little background without feeling like it’s not going anywhere. I’m glad it worked for you!! also nice tip about preringing. though I’m thinking that would only work for preringing from silence. the ringing affects more than just the start/end of the sound. I believe it rings constantly - you just can’t see it easily during sustained sounds like you can with a kick drum or something.

Does this mean you should also use linear phase EQ? Or not since it’s affecting the whole spectrum at once?
@jshstuff7 ай бұрын
yeah exactly. if you’re trying to mix to high LUFS levels, watch out for anything at all that shifts the phase on the master. even other kinds of effects like certain saturation/distortion can cause phase shift. if you really need to eq or add any phase-altering effects, try doing it at the bus level, or on individual tracks. then limit/clip all the tracks/busses at 0dB (look up CTZ).
