dude I'm not even kidding, the way you added those little pink/purple overlays with text saying things like "soon it gets better" and so on actually gave me a better sense of understanding which parts to pay attention to more. It's so easy while watching KZbin tutorials to sort of "drift off" forgetting why you even started watching because so many things are being mentioned leading up to making the final point that it actually helps to just know kind of like "okay we're getting there thanks for letting me know", and it even made me pay more attention somehow to the things you were explaining besides the actual linear phase mode being activated. And for those wondering "well what can I do about pre-ringing?" Consolidate all your tracks into audio tracks and then just cut it out. That's what Skrillex does.
@jshstuff3 ай бұрын
good to know. the only other guy who ever commented on those transition things said it was dumb and I shouldn’t do it because it makes it seem like I’m not confident in what I’m saying. I think I put it there because I wanted to keep things quick but also give a little background without feeling like it’s not going anywhere. I’m glad it worked for you!! also nice tip about preringing. though I’m thinking that would only work for preringing from silence. the ringing affects more than just the start/end of the sound. I believe it rings constantly - you just can’t see it easily during sustained sounds like you can with a kick drum or something.

Thank You for the info looked up linear phase and its told not to use it unless your using a shelf and not bell when EQ'ing but im decisive on that because i know to be careful because you will lose the impact of the sound especially if its purpose is meant to hit hard. This one of those choices of "would you rather shave peaks or preserve peaks" peaks sound & translates to the ear as DETAIL it makes sense to use linear phase on mastering to achieve more loudness.
@jshstuff Жыл бұрын
I think the real key is to avoid using multiband on the master unless it's strictly necessary. because it forces you to pick between the two evils: unwanted peaking or pre/post ringing. neither is good but in the case I demonstrated in this video I'd argue pre-ringing is much less bad.
@kelainefes Жыл бұрын
@@jshstuff I didn't see any preringing in psyscope in this video. It's nowhere near as noticeable as some videos out there make it out to be in practical use. If you want to hear it, use a steep resonant high pass on a synthetic kick and move it up to the frequency of the tail.

This, also, kind of goes back to compressors not actually reducing peaks. They change the dynamic range, which you can use to control your peaks. But, a really harsh transient is still going to sneak through even the fastest compressors (unless it has that pre-hear feature which is relatively new).
@samkitt Жыл бұрын
yeah clippers and limiters for peaks. Compressors for creating transients ;)
@heheboi2553 Жыл бұрын
Well, this is a very good explanation for linear phasing problem and it's relation with the loudness shit and all, the only thing I use to keep a very loud mix and also having a -3db peak, I use the soft clipper and a FabFilter Pro L, I would say that people should focus first on perfectly EQ their sounds in the mix 1 by 1 because this helps a lot while doing the master stuff and use reference tracks.
@nj1255 Жыл бұрын
If you have the option of setting the filter crossover to single-pole (6dB/oct), like in Fabfilter Pro-MB, you can use minimum-phase crossovers without getting those phase rotations. The different bands will overlap quite a bit (like A LOT), but if you are only going for two or three bands, it's still perfectly useable. It seems like Maximus only have two-pole (12dB/oct) and three-pole (24dB/oct) crossovers as options though.

i love your series, best recommendation in a long while. could you do a video on midi sidechaining?
@jshstuff10 ай бұрын
@akinevz_ :) hmm maybe at some point. in FL I've just been using @DylanTallchief 's midi sidechain technique for the past few years. I don't have a lot to add to his method. video is "How to ACTUALLY sidechain in FL Studio". in the second half of the video he shows how to trigger automation clips using a midi note which automates a fruity balance. that's basically it, I don't do much else for sidechaining kick/sub. there have been a few FL updates in the past 5 years that improve this workflow, like if you double click a midi clip there's a better midi editor now. it's useful for dialing in the sc envelope. the main thing I'd talk about if I made a sidechain vid would be stuff about how to dial in good sidechain settings for your sounds, how to do better kick/sub phase alignment and such. but I think @Baphometrix does a better job explaining that stuff than I do. I recommend their "Considerations for sidechain ducking" and "Deep Dive Into Kick-Sub Phase Alignment & Ducking" videos. I would basically just be repeating what Baphometrix says. I've come up with some similar but slightly better workflows for midi sidechaining in bitwig that make life way easier. maybe I'll make a video on that at some point.

Non-linear phase do pre ringing but linear phase also do some post ringing. So, i think, spending more time to learn and understand the purpose of each action in your mix help a way more than click on a button that can ruined your mix and then your loud master. Linear mode have to be use in really rare case. Anyhow, if your mix is good you don’t need to use linear mode.
@jshstuff Жыл бұрын
great point about post ringing! around 4:30 you can see the square wave both pre and post ringing in the oscillloscope. also I agree with you that it helps most to focus on getting a good mix, rather than trying to do a lot of things on the master. though, if you're arguing that I shouldn't have used a linear phase band split in this case then I'd disagree. the main point of this video is that if you're dead set on doing some EQ or multiband compression on a loud, high RMS signal that's been heavily limited & clipped, linear phase mode is the lesser of two evils because of how destructive the phase shifting is. so I suppose yes, linear phase needs to be used in rare cases, but this is one of those cases. thanks for taking the time to comment!

This is such a good tip! Just a question, if it fucks up the phase. When and why would we use a "normal" EQ, besides saving cpu-power?
@tezeta3725 Жыл бұрын
Linear phase introduces pre-ringing. If you've ever made a big narrow boost on an eq before you might notice that frequency will ring out a little longer than it did without the boost. With linear phase eq that ringing also happens before the sound instead of just after, so it can end up smearing the transients.
@KINGDOM_OFFICIAL01 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I would've just used an EQ, and boosted a certain range rather than messing up phase relationships. I personally hate bandsplitting unless you really want that dispersed sound
@jshstuff Жыл бұрын
this is a great question, and it’s also a super broad question that probably doesn’t have an easy answer. in my process I use a “normal” eq 99.9% of the time. in almost every case I’m ok with the phase being smeared. this is because I’ll almost always saturate and clip my sounds after I eq them, so any weird peaks created by this phase smearing get tamed and chopped down in a desirable way. if you want to deep dive into this saturation and clipping process, specifically for mixing loud, definitely check out Baphometrix’s CTZ series. I follow a lot of her methodology. the only time I’d personally use a linear phase eq is if for some reason I absolutely needed to do some eq AFTER I’ve done lots of saturation/clipping to a sound. because when I clip a sound, I’m trying to make sure the waveform retains its squared off shape all the way to the master & to the exported WAV file, and doesn’t end up smeared again like the square wave I showed in the video. but ideally I would be doing the EQing with a normal EQ BEFORE my clipping at the track level, rather than after the clipping on the track, or worse yet: on the master channel. hopefully this makes sense to some level & is helpful!!

An important note is that with multiband compressors like that a lot of them are separated into bands via a bunch of low/high pass filters and in minimum (non linear) phase those create a 180 degree phase rotation (a full inversion) at the crossover point, which is why its so much worse with multiband compressors.
@kelainefes Жыл бұрын
Yes, but that 180 rotation at the crossover point is negated by flipping the polarity of either odd or even bands, so that the bands are phase coherent at the crossover points and the frequency response is linear.
@zRhid Жыл бұрын
@@kelainefes not necessarily true because 1. in order for the crossover to not have a bump in volume at higher slopes the cutoffs are often placed higher and lower respectively than the actual crossover. you can hear this in Abletons EQ3 for example 2. once it starts compressing that interaction changes entirely because the gain level is no longer the same, re-introducing the phase issues
@olikirke Жыл бұрын

question: why is preringing an unavoidable artifact of linear phase settings? what prevents them from preserving the phase relationship without introducing any preringing?
@jshstuff Жыл бұрын
yeah good question I sort of wonder the same. I’ve heard that when doing eq in the digital realm it’s always a tradeoff between changes to either the phase or time domain (ie. pre/postringing). at least one of those things need to be altered for the filter work. apparently eq plugin developers sometimes find a middle ground where they’re changing both the phase and time simultaneously, but not changing either too drastically. I think that’s what pro q’s natural phase mode is, though I’ve never used pro q
