Wish they would put well defined pilot figures BACK in Airfix kits. The Mr. Blobby variant that we get now just doesn't cut the mustard. Maybe it's something to do with the physical scanning of pilots from existing - 60s-70s-80s - moulds that loses the definition that is clearly there on the older kits?

Having really enjoyed building the new version of the 1:24 Spitfire a couple of winters ago, I bought this to while away the dark nights this year. I knew it was a “legacy” kit, but the quality of the moulding, the components, the fit… everything, is really poor. Building this is turning into a chore, not a pleasure. How Airfix have the nerve to charge the same price for this as for the Spitfire is beyond me. They should be ashamed of themselves.

nice build! I've had one of theses come via ebay today, it has been part started with the pilot, seat, instrument panel and yoke all already glued in, unpainted! while watching your video I dry fitted the two halves of mine, and the pilot and seat are way over to the right, almost looks like a side by side arrangement, also mine came without any instruction sheet, so you've helped me out on that score with those nice close up of your instructions, finally, I am going to use a set of those kora trnsfers too, to make mine represent an AR 196 from the tirpitz, because I have a 1/350 tamiya tirpitz kit, that has about four 196's in that scale, so I did want to build a "full size" version of one!

Well, there's a coincidence! My paternal grandfather was in the R.A.M.C. in WWI too. (Still got his thermometer). He'd been in the 2nd Boer war before that. Somewhere, I have a carved wooden cross mounted on a string of carved wooden beads which was given to him by one of the African locals at some point. All the medals I've got are stored in a fancy tobacco tin that was given to the troops for Christmas 1914.

@johnhughes2653 spooky! I know very little about his service in WW1 but he was a civvy by 1916, so somehow he was discharged. Shame there's no records. David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Tuesday, 6 August, 2024) I fondly remember as a boy building numerous Airfix kits. I had not quite understood why some of the smaller parts felt so crude of design or molding; and why the entire vehicle had felt so poorly detailed overall. So seeing these, whilst quite commonplace of purpose, is such a delight for me. A question, though: is this an Army truck (lorry?). Would the RAF have employed any to serve upon an airfield? Perhaps another version with a tank of petrol? Or another open vehicle to bring forth a troop of aircraft crew members? A third functioning as an ambulance?

@user-ni2zo5zo3c Hi David. It's basically the same as the K2, which was famously an ambulance but was also used as a fire engine and I'm sure there were various other uses too. If you have a Google I'm sure you'll find lots of photos. Cheers, Barry

Very nearly the first kit I ever built - but I picked the Supermarine Walrus instead. I have built a couple since - but as 'Thunderbirds' style 'Heli-jets' - they were used as such on the show, albeit heavily modified. Not a bad kit as such, but that two part transparency for the cockpit is horrible. Not bad with say, Tamiya Extra Thin cement, but a nightmare with the gloopy stuff we had in the past. It's a sod to fit using PVA glue even. I wish Airfix had retooled those parts.

Nice unboxing video and its done me a big favour to be honest, because Im half way through building a 1996 boxing of this kit which used the 1959 tooling..... Let me just say that cockpit.... S H O C K I N G !!! Absolitely no detail apart from a bulging door on each half 😢 . I was considering buying the new vintage classics version just for a replacement cockpit if they had re-engineered the clear part tooling, but it appears not. Oh well, I best just press on with the cockpit glazing from the 1996 boxing and you've saved me £15.99. Cheers mate. 👍 By the way, the 3 side windows in my 1996 boxing all went into place without any issue. I think the only bonus for you when you build it will be the more modern plastic, because Ive found my version has very brittle plastic sprues, which have resulted in a couple of repairs during my build. Best of luck with your build though. 👍

I used a Humbrol orange rattle can on the Severn and it worked perfectly. It was years ago but likely over a Halford's grey primer. I have an old Citadel orange which I recall was also good but was just too light for the RNLI shade. The Severn was worth persevering with as in the end it looks amazing. I think the superstructure was designed to lift off to show that detailed interior, but it was too tight a fit so I ended up sanding down the inside. But I agree, it depends how much you want to build it.

Hi Simon. I used a white primer for the orange but I got the same as I always get with humbrol, it's just too watery. My airbrush doesn't have an adjustment for air pressure, so I can't not thin the paint. Not tried a yellow primer though, any recommendations? Cheers

@@nostalgicplastic4323 sorry mate, although I purchase the mini airbrush you recommended ages ago...Ive still not used it as Im still waiting to alter my spare room, so I still only use hairy sticks Im afraid. Ive used a rattle can of humbrol matt white for a Gulf War Tornado, but that needed 3 coats of desert pink before the white streaks and brush marks finally went. Begining to wonder if I should have used grey primer for that instead. Ive got another one to build so might try grey primer instead.
