My Step Dad flew AQN with 276 Squadron from Harrowbeer , it was his favourite aircraft to fly and he also flew the Squadron Spitfire AQC on search missions . He said that the Walrus was often difficult to take off after a rescue if there was a heavy sea running so they had to taxi home but the rule was you always landed to rescue downed crew from the sea. I have already built this model from the original release it is a great kit and detailing is great .

The Airfix 1/72 scale Walrus was the very first kit I made all by myself, in 1971. Everyone was making Spitfires, but I wanted something different. The general weirdness of the Walrus struck a chord with me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 'Shagbat' was an aircraft beloved by it's crews, and even more by the downed airmen it saved. There are many tales told of heroic things done by this 'plane - one, where a Walrus picked up so many people, it could not actually take off, but evaded enemy fighters by escaping like an airboat, is legendary. And true. I'm actually making an old Matchbox one, which will be painted as a pre-war machine, inspired by a photo in an old album by A Certain Ratio.

What a kit , Airfix must have sold there soles to the modeling gods when they created this kit . It's not everyones cup of tea but I highly recommend it goes together so well and the detail is superb. Not to everyones budget however I can say this kit is value for money. If you're thinking of after market PE it will put the cost of the kit up another £30 you factor all your paints in the kit starts to look pricey. That said it will look just as good without the PE Airfix did such a good Job. Because the silver wing variant is a big slab of silver spend your money on different shades of silver and some nice rigging. What a kit What kit well-done Airfix .

known as the "ShagBat", thin guitar strings are quite good for rigging

I shall accept your word for it! I've got some stretchy rigging stuff I'm still getting the hang of.
