This is basically the climb back to my house. The super steep bit that goes right/left about half way up is just pure pain
@WheelygoodCycling6 күн бұрын
Wow, that must mean any bike ride from home is a bit tricky at the very end!
@CKNZ1617 күн бұрын
This is where I grew up. I rode up that hill a few times when I was still at school. This would have been the late 80s and the bikes were a Raleigh road bike and a large mountain bike, the brand of which I can't quite remember. The first few times were a failure as I had to stop at the steepest part in the middle which is like a three or four metre ramp. After a while I managed to do the whole climb in one go. Doing this eventually lost its sense of achievement and when I left school and discovered college, girls, partying, alcohol and weed, it was replaced altogether.
@WheelygoodCycling6 күн бұрын
🤣 Chapeau for sticking with it until you could do it in a oner, especially on those old Raleigh racers and their non-hillclimbing gears, and I really can't blame you for moving on to other things as, in fairness, it's only those of us on left field who persist into middle age!

@WheelygoodCycling Been watching a few of your videos now and will try and get back to it and do a few climbs in Wales. There are a few streets in the Blackwood and Newbridge area that look hellish. Locally there's also "The Bastard Hills of North Bristol" challenge.

Road should probably have been in inverted commas here.😂
@WheelygoodCycling12 күн бұрын
Yeah, it probably should! It sums up the whole experience of the climb pretty well: it's a pain to get there on tiny little roads where the farmers really aren't expecting any other traffic, a pain to ride and a pain to get back!

I wonder if he might have been running out of climbs to make up the 100 for the X-List; Old Kilpatrick Hill is just a … rocky path, Afon Ddu has a surface which looks like it’s been laid for tracked vehicles. Even Bamford Clough is, IIRC, a tarmaced BOAT. This one, though, just felt like a short cobbled berg to nowhere so I had to walk back down most of it…
@CKNZ161Ай бұрын
Clovelly's main street in the centre of the village had a system of sleds and rope pulleys to hoist things up via the street (presumably from the harbour), in order to give an ide as to what this possibly marginally less steep harbour road is like.
@WheelygoodCyclingАй бұрын
Thanks for the info; I had no idea and, now that it’s been pointed out, it makes complete sense for the area. I’m hoping to make it back down to the South West later in the year so I’ll see if I can pick off any more climbs in the area…

@@WheelygoodCycling I see you have done Vale Street near me and done it the proper way: from the bottom of Park Street. I have only managed to climb it starting from the bottom of Vale Street itself. There are two lesser known car free paved pathways that run from Crews Hole Road to Beaufort Road in St George. Lamb Hill and Strawberry Lane. They are (in my limited experience) worse.

Hi Mavis! 🙋🏻 Cheers and, yes, it was very much an off-road experience. A mountain bike is probably the right choice, with a gravel or cyclo-cross bike a close second, although I reckon you could make it on a road bike in the dry if you fully committed to it.

@WheelygoodCycling2 ай бұрын
No probs! Practically, the GoPro works really well for me, but I did end up binning my previous one (a Black 8), because it would just freeze video recordings randomly once it got beyond about 3 years old. I bought another because the footage was great (when it worked) and there had been sought improvements in the newer ones that it was worth a second shot and, tough wood, I’ve not had any bother with the newer one. I’ve seen good sports footage from the Insta360s too, if that’s of use, although I’ve never tried one…

@WheelygoodCycling3 ай бұрын
The best advice I can give is to keep your powder dry until the cobbles start. After that, just do what you need to do to keep moving! The first time I rode it, I used the little housing estate on the left half way up the cobbled: I just turned in and out again for a few seconds respite, which made a big difference at the time...
@Dani-El.3 ай бұрын
Is that an E-bike? It sounded like a motor slowing down at the end. I did this hill the other day on an XC mountain bike, hoping it would be easier than Grains Road (the other option from Delph to the top of the same hill). Not sure which is easiest tbh.
@WheelygoodCycling3 ай бұрын
It's not an e-bike; I don't own one. The most likely culprit of the noise is the Mavic wheels on one of my bikes which have a machined surface on the rims that makes a sort of whistling noise noise when you apply the brakes. I'm not familiar with Grains Road (at least not by name), but appreciate the heads-up and will pop it on my list for when I try to pick off the climbs only the locals know about...
@Dani-El.3 ай бұрын
@@WheelygoodCycling Grains Road is at the same junction as Knott Hill, and ends up at the same place at the top of the hill, so the two roads are almost parallel. If anything, Knott Hill is more of a local people road, as Grains Road has much more traffic.
