why do you need to aerate the water when the roots of the plants are in the loose gravel substrate above the water where there should be enough air getting to them through the gravel?

Solariver had the perfect solar air stone system..a bit pricey but built to last. I am new to this and have invested in a solar water pump. I want to do a NFT system but am trying to figure out how to keep the grow tray from draining out at night when solar not running (I am off grid) I was thinking some type of shut off valve a nutrient return ? Any suggestions would be appreciated

If the air pump is higher than the water level in the buckets, you won't need the check valves. Save some money , set the pump on top of a flipped over bucket or box .

I see you did this a couple of years ago. I was thinking of doing a winter project like this. How did the radishes turn out and what are your thoughts on this system now? Is there anything that you would do to improve it or do you even use this anymore? Thanks for your posts!

@@davidb7130 the radishes turned out great! I would add a fill tube to make it easier to add nutrients as well as see the water level.

@@HydroHowTo thanks for the response! I was also wondering if the smaller holes for the wick restricted the water flow And is it really necessary to seal the end of the wick? I would think a frayed wick would pull more water or am I mistaken?

Excellent video. Couldn’t find a follow up but seen in comments you said the radishes did well. Any changes you’d make next time to improve other than staggering seed planting? I only ask as looking to create for next growing season and want to get best start possible, thanks. And a suggestion, Would love to see more follow up videos of the plants growing and maybe even different vegetables to see what works and what doesn’t, as don’t seem to be many video available like yours.

Hey! I would add a fill tube to the side. It’s handy for filling and for instantly seeing the water level in the reservoir. Thanks for watching!

I had some spare 5 gal buckets around, so i got an idea close to this, but your guide is going to make it a breeze! Thank you! Additionally, your website seems to have an SSL/Certificate error and wont show, so it would be great if others can see the work you've done there!

Why bother with the aerator? It's not DWC where the roots can benefit from O2. It's not wicking air afterall, just water and nutrients.

You can make the same thing with less tools, less time and less work. I have made small ones with 2 liter bottles for herbs. It's like to steps. The only tools you need is a 2 liter bottle, knife and nylon string or cut strips of a T-shirt. If you don't have nylon. It takes about 5 mins to do the whole thing.
