The US military does indeed have its own network of satellites which are capable of taking over the role of GPS. As for your actual question: wondrous inertial navigation systems launched from known points that are very accurate. Couple this with ground contouring lidar and you essentially have a mini B1

At night, don't look down as much; instead, look up.
@CoryDalton-h7w6 күн бұрын
These guys clearly don't understand the importance of nighttime ecology, circadian rhythms, how light behaves when it hits the atmosphere, the negative effects of space junk, light pollution and the negative health effects associated, ice formation.... Light pollution is increasing at 2 percent each year. Leveraging the night against our energy demands sounds like a terrible idea. Even if we vastly reduce our fossil fuel production, i believe this solves nothing, and likely just introduces new risks to the environment. Imagine several of these things failing in space as satellites tend to do. Don't drink the kool-aid.

Google this "C-17 Tests Magnetic Navigation System That Works When GPS Doesn’t," it's a new technology that isn't hacky. Will likely be used by commercial aircraft flying near places like Israel at some point, where GPS jamming is a problem.

Was this made so stupid people pretend their experts? Off line mapping has been on drones for over a decade it's free and anyone can install it. The comnents saying its being worked on are ridiculous. And the arm chair experts and their comments look like special need children.

Idea: mother drone that sits higher in the air and positions based on larger features such as terrain height, and provides position data to smaller disposable precision drones. Kinda like a mini AWAC. Obviously this introduces a new set of issues, but might be worth the trade offs

No need offline mapping is free accurate to within 2 metres and is on all my drones as back up. Recreating the wheel here.

@atw98 they cited warzones as a specific issue. This is what I'm referring to.
@atw987 күн бұрын
@@alaricwilli6482 its not an issue. When we were there at the start of the year we coded offline maps and targeting which they are rolling out now. The symbols they use on their vehicles will change shortly so that they can switch on the auto targeting using image libraries. Offline mapping is already available and easy to install and works within 2 metres. The comments about it being developed are by people who are obviously pretending they have any knowledge about the industry is laughable.

Itried to get in contact with a drone network solution for trench warfare over a year with Kyiv and never got one at a line. I have numerous ideas for many modern tasks from active warfare to mine cleaning. If one wnts to link me to a team with software and electronics capabilities I am willed to move under contract to get things done as a german engineer. To the vid. Terain matching based on A.I. and commercially available digital maps in adition with commercial flight controllers and iNav has always been the way to go with independency from GPS/Glonas/... which is easy to disturb or block. Anything relevant for flight mission has to be on the drone and hardened against electromagnetic impact. The easy task is to implement a code. What those guys did. Now lets add some pattern matching to improve the reconability of tanks, artillery batteries, ... enhanced by the sameA.I. Further I am convinced that within a couple of months a swarm solution is possible to build that brings as well a devastating attack weapon as a psychological blowto the battlefields of ukraine, highly integrated and autonomous in a logistics compatible24ft container. I am will3d. I burn for it. One make me an offer that makes me move to Ukraine or whereever. I am humble with cash. ❤

Ardupilot has had this for over a decade. Sorry mate this is not new nor do I think he's as knowledgeable as he says he is. Offline mapping has been about for decades and to drones for near 15 years.

SLAM
@atw987 күн бұрын
Funny thing is you don't even need SLAM now. Due to maps being rendered by Satellite now with elevations being mm accurate a simple start/finish point is enough and for drones requires no extra sensors it's now just offline mapping. Ardupilot has had it for over a decade, and it's free!

People in the DOD or almost any of the military branch labs know next to nothing about SLAM or visual inertial odometry. They’re not hard to impress.
@postmandev14 күн бұрын
The trick to their approach is passing both the satellite map tile and aerial photo through an encoder reducing it to a vector. Then compare both vectors via cosine-similarity and if it’s above a threshold it’s a match. The satellite map has GPS coordinates associated with each tile giving them their current location. There’s probably additional processing done within each know map tile to further refine the location within the map tile.
