C'mon man. Buy a damn camera, put some film in it and get on with your life. Maybe you dont deserve a Leica. Sell the thing or dont sell it. Just MOVE ON. Next thing you know you'll be waffling between film and digital, or the whole parade of lenses. Be a man and choose. NO REGRETS. No hemming and Hawing about whether you did the right thing. Just get the camera you want and then commit to it. Jeez.

Hi, there. I'm catching up with you long after you did this video but wanted to say I really enjoyed your 'waffle'. Checked prices on this little panorama monster you described and see they've gotten silly! However, I have a Minolta P-twin bought a ways back that I've never used. It has a 30mm lens and panorama option, so may give that a go, should be similar results to those you got. I liked a lot of the shots you made with the Riva and think your eye for composition is notable, so keep on keepin' on. Cheers. Bep from Halifax, NS, Canada.

Thanks Brian, I'd be interested to see hwo you get on with the P-twin. These cameras have got silly money - it's a shame really, but a sign of the times I guess...

If a 50mm gives you good or even great background separation without being too busy with good sharpness and contrast, you can't lose. For me, it's the Takumar 50mm f/1.4

People can be so simple minded, it’s astonishing. If I was a gun collector, would people try to tell me that it’s who I shoot that’s most important? Same logic. 4:10

Just read your article on 35mmc which linked to this video and wanted to say that your choice of modifications and the reverse panda style is just so gorgeous... I always hated how the "panda" M6 looks like... but the way you did it, with the silver accents on a black body, wow it is gorgeous, great taste mate.

My mate uses the Sonnar f1.5 and gets some spectacular results from it. His copy doesn't seem to suffer too much with focus shift either but I know some do. I love the look and render of this lens but I already have the Summilux which has been a long term favourite of mine for many years.
@HamishGill Жыл бұрын
Indeed, some are differently calibrated. So the ones that are for f1.5 will focus shift more at the middle apertures and the ones that are calibrated for f2.8 focus shift more wide open. Mine is for f2 which is the optimum in my opinion
@papapoumАй бұрын
@@HamishGill As I plan to buy a Zeiss sonnar f1.5 brand new, I have asked last month what is the new calibration for 2024 new models, here is the reply from Zeiss : "Out of factory, the C-Sonnar T* 1,5/50 ZM always comes in an adjustment to be the best compromize regarding its focus shift. On a camera with a perfectly calibrated rangefinder, the C-Sonnar will give you a slight front focus at f/1.5, spot-on focusing at f/2, and a slight backfocus at f/2.8. Please do your own tests with your camera to get used to the behaviour of this special lens. When using the live view of the Leica M for accurate focusing, the focus shift of the lens is immediately visible on the screen and does not play any role at all in practical use anymore."🙂

For a person who has written some of the best long form reviews of leica gear, it’s surprising it doesn’t translate to video. I would say your leica reviews are definitive reviews if placed next to Reid Reviews which compliments them from a technical stand point. I took great relish in receiving a new Leica MA which I plan to use for some time without getting distracted by other options and thought about what you mentioned in your review pertaining to that body. I suppose a camera body is secondary when one has good options like a summicron and Zeiss.

@@HamishGill few Leica forums online were saying there are two types of arms, both from the M3 I think. One is slightly shorter and needs double cocking but the long one is just a single stroke. And as you know these are not cheap so kinda want to get it right first time lol

I only hope that when I am gone that my daughter sees some value in a few of my images enough to keep and cherish them. Maybe she will remember the 4H photography project she did with my help in my darkroom when she was around 14 or 15 and the fun we had making her first print. beyond that it matters little as i shoot mainly for the enjoyment of shooting and many times never get around to printing or even scanning rolls of film. the day spent shooting and developing was enough.
@anthonymiller89792 жыл бұрын
BTW, your discussion and thoughts really hit home with me. I enjoy the process of using my older film cameras and the finial image is not all that important to me. After developing, and rarely possibly scanning and viewing I too am kind of done with it. It served its purpose and I seldom look at them again. That said, at times it is fun when I stumble across negatives I shot 40 years ago as they bring back memories of the day taken and that negative, is a real thing that was there that day, with me and in the presence of that scene. It is a piece of my history. Something a digital file just lacks for me.

You made an interesting statement about if you have more than one lens on you it is hard to concentrate. I never really thought about it before but that describes what happens to me. I am more worried about what lens to use for everything I see, rather than looking for what I can do with my 50 or 28 or what is on the camera now.
@HamishGill2 жыл бұрын
For sure. Some people resort to just owning one camera and one lens - which I think does work for some. For me, it’s just about taking a small amount of gear out with me. I like gear, and I like playing with it, and thinking about it… but not when I’m actually taking a photo
@gearreallydoesntmatter2 жыл бұрын
The problem many will have is that they only have one camera that they spent hours researching and now must defend at all cost. Whenever you see a new camera released, no matter what camera that is, the comments are filled with people justifying not buying it. They aren't satisfied with just not buying it. They need to voice why and seek approval from others. And also ridicule those who might buy it. In your case its probably often the same case but slightly different. They need to comment in order to let you know that they aren't jealous, which they kinda are :)

sold my M-A I bought new, buy an other m4-2 then after two years… bought an other pre owned M-A… why? because M-A is the most beautiful M in black . because M4-2 is an old beast, wich need a lot of cla, with their old spring, box full of dust and oil, and old wheels. I love the M4-2 but I adore the M-A Because buying a pre-owned 6 year M-A put his price in a real value range. Because this is the ultimate M film camera . So Hamish , stop thinking and go back to the most beautiful camera on earth.

From experience, even if you don't even account for the sound, rangefinders are more discreet visually. I can't count how many times security has asked me if I have a permit to photograph when I have an SLR (and I mean digital, film, you name it) but when I bring up a point and shoot, a rangefinder-styled body, or an actual rangefinder (even the Texas Leicas/Fuji GW6X0 series), they either don't mind it or just laugh.

From your written review I'm paraphrasing "it just doesn't work for me" is an overused phrase that seems to suggest that you are different in the number of joints in your fingers. Your whole job is buying cameras and writing about them, you are not a photographer, judging by the example photos that you have posted. Please temper your comments with the understanding that a lot of your audience are photographers, and ones who own and use these cameras, for more than one roll.
@HamishGill3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t suggest that at all, it suggests that my personal experience - for the many reasons I outlined - led to me not enjoying this camera. Why should I temper my comments? Are you suggesting that if I don’t personally like a camera, I shouldn’t talk about the reasons I don’t like it? By extension, I should only say good things about cameras? That wouldn’t make for very good reviews. And, ignoring the quality of my photos which seems incidental when my criticisms were entirely about user experience, how do you suggest should my understanding of my audience change? I’d personally suggest that the audience I am talking to are people who haven’t shot even one roll - both “photographers” and people who otherwise just enjoy cameras who are looking for a range of opinions about a camera they are thinking about buying. That’s what I’m providing, a simple opinion to sit in the context of other opinions online. At no point do I assert that what I say will match the opinions of others. In fact, I actually say the opposite to that. Of course, when it comes to potential audience, I do concede that there might be some people who are apparently looking for “photographers” to validate their own opinions about camera choices they have already made… but I’m not sure why I should worry about offending them…? Perhaps they should grow thicker skin and remember that it really doesn’t matter if someone on the internet says they don’t like their precious camera - as after all, this is only cameras we are talking about here.

Good discussion... I think value maybe subjective... It probably is for many things... Of course I value the photos of my kids and wife and loved ones... For me value is intrinsic, it comes natural with what you love, and what inspires... So, in a sense, I equate value with love... And it has nothing to do with arrogance... It is simple honest value of what one loves... It's subjective...

Yes, it is the photographer and not the camera. However--and this is a big however--I would also say that the camera is a big part of what makes the photograph. Different cameras will give you different results. This is obvious. So it is only natural for a photographer to be keenly interested in different cameras.
