I hope they're better at soldering than they are at streaming.

this is actually the best soldering tutorial I've ever seen, and I've seen exactly 3. but seriously, this is fantastic!

I was disappointed that the instructor didn't spark up a cigarette during the presentation.

3:20 an explanation of why the gap is necessary would help comprehension and retention. But this/these videos are great learning material

Some areas in vintage electronic components are very difficult to get to so it is not always easy to follow this practice

Do you paint some flux onto the turret and wire if using non-solder core solder (egs. 99.3 %Sn - 0.7% Cu)?

Got a ConForm in the mail today. I’m certain it will quickly set lead spacing for professional looking work. Beyond soldering, breadboard results will be much cleaner using it too. Yes, it’s plastic, but reinforced (glass-filled?) so it’s tougher than it looks. Slider could fit tighter, but if I keep pressure on the upper side while tightening the screw it helps. Perfectly suited to work than shouldn’t need strong-arming in the first place. Thanks for the timeless courses, Pace!

its the sx-25 solderpiece hes using? - cant find a catalog on Pace website with all models of their desoldering pieces they ever created (even google doesnt show any info about the sx-20, 25, 30 series. I have this grey one hes holding in the video (bought it second hand), want to buy some spare parts for it, but hard to tell what model it actually is.

Given that Pace is supposed to be a respected supplier of industrial soldering equipment, this demo was abysmal. That practice board is highly unrepresentative of the density of components on a real board, where the kapton tape would not work. Then soldering by hot air alone, without heating the PCB (eg on a hotplate rework station) will subject the component to the maximum stress. And prodding and poking it while soldering almost guarantees messing up the melted balls. This does not do credit to Pace at all.

or, just grow a third arm, so one hand holds the wire in the cup, another the soldering iron and the third applies the soLder. - I've often said techs need a third arm for soldering. And this is after a few days of making small looms that include hermetically sealed Mil-C connectors with solder cups that are surrounded/sunk into a connector body so very difficult to access with soldering iron tip. - and wires with insulation that melts too, easier with Teflon sheaths. -- much prefer Mil-C connectors with removable pins, that are crimped and then inserted! Not sure if the 'solder-preform' would be recommended nowadays, especially for high reliability aerospace applications. - It is essentially the same as pre-tinning the cup, you could also pre-tin the wire end, and nowadays gel-flux is available so insert tinned wire into tinned cup with a little gel-flux, and apply iron _may_ work in some applications.
