Every time you discuss Getz you have to bring up the fact that he could be difficult. Why on earth is that so important to you? I’ve heard so many instances of this. You do point out his wonderful musical attributes every time, but seem to want to show these negative personal attributes pointedly and over and over again. Most people are complicated. Getz passed away a long time ago. At this point, it seems to be a special issue with you.

Stan Getz fired Roy Haynes durIng the initial sessions for the “Sweet Rain” record. The band also included Steve Swallow and Chick Corea at the time. Whatever went on between Stan and Roy it wasn’t good the way it went down because Swallow and Chick also were ready to leave the group feeling that Stan treated Roy very badly and fired him in a disrespectful way. Swallow left with Roy, but Swallow and Roy convinced Chick to stay because he had written several tunes for the upcoming Sweet Rain record. This is why the band on Sweet Rain is Chick Corea, Ron Carter, Grady Tate on drums and Stan Getz.

T.H.E. Question, to be or not to be a classical player. Jake thanks so much for this in-depth, vulnerable interview of a brilliant mind and fantastic musician. The air national guard band was a hot group. They played The 1812 overture with the LA Phil complete with fireworks. It was a tough time for all these musicians, they played their way out of the war thank God. JCDE is one of a kind. So glad you appreciate him too. Great interview.

Lindley talking about Werewolves of London: " A very serious song; we all have a wolf and a lamb inside of us and we need to learn how to make them live together". Also worth noting that Warren didn't think it should be the first big, heavily-promoted single from that record, but the record company saw it had potential to be a hit.

I remember reading an interview with Cooder where he said "Mick Jagger is a c__t but he was nice to me because he needed the music". Apparently, somewhat less nice after he'd gotten what he wanted from Ry. The song I remember Ry specifically mentioning in interviews as having been "borrowed" from him was the opening riffs to Honky Tonk Women.

Jorge is presumably referring to the Bundu Boys; I saw them at the Edmonton Music Fest in Calgary in 1992, where Lindley played with Ry Cooder. They had about 60 performers; by far the best music fest I've ever attended, far beyond the Newport Folk Fest.
