Steve Getz on Stan Getz

My first date with the lady who is now my wife of 38 years was a Stan Getz performance in a club in suburban Detroit. This was 1984. Stan, Rufus Reid, Kenny Barron, Victor Lewis. We sat front & center, right in front of Stan (who had a K-Mart box fan blowing softly on him throughout the set). I loved Stan since I was 7 years old and found the Big Band Bossa Nova LP in our hi-fi cabinet and proceeded to wear it out. She hadn’t heard of Stan, but ever since, when she hears him, she says “I LOVE Stan Getz!” The first time I heard that, I said “I thought you loved me! That dirty rat! If I ever see him again… haha.” 🙂… Man, do I miss him. What a great bunch of guys he was… 🙂 Thanks for this great insight into Stan, The Man! God bless him and his family.

My uncle, top trumpet guy here in Detroit ‘50s-‘70s… huge Stan fan… and a very technical guy, made mouthpieces, consulted with trumpet mfrs. … Because I play sax - mainly tenor - he asks “How does Stan get that sound???!!! Is it his reed? His mouthpiece? I said “Man, I wish I knew!” So later, I’d hooked up with my childhood music teacher, top reed man, close acquaintance of my uncle, also a major Stan fan, and I asked him… He says “Your sound… comes from your BRAIN. Stan Getz had a huge brain!”

Nice interview. When did it happen? Sadly, as far as I know, Steve passed away several years back. Looking forward to the doc!!
