I've been wondering when the classic car people were going to speak up. I read some of the really rich were paying a fortune to have their cars converted to electric, but what about the guy down the street with his great grandfather's lovingly pristine 1930s car? It's gorgeous but he can't just drop 25k into ruining it with an electric rebuild.

also I think there's always going to be ENOUGH people who want a "dumb" car, for lack of a better term to justify spending the time and money today to maintain the valuable classics from the 50s, 60s and 70s and pretty much ALL vehicles made between 1988 and 2000. Granted, we are a very small segment of the population but I think in the next few years we will see more people become interested in the idea of a car that ISN"T reliant on internet connectivity to run. I'm never going to give up my 1980's SUV. I have two engines, two transmissions.....almost every major part on that vehicle, I've collected a backup part for it and I've spent a lot of time learning how to rebuild the core components so if I ever have to swap the engine out, I can get right to work on rebuilding the engine that went back so that I (or someone else in the future) has a perfectly functional backup to keep the vehicle going. I believe that the long term use that I squeeze out of this older vehicle far offsets whatever small impact it's emissions and use of fossil fuels has on the environment and I believe that a vehicle is something that the owner should truly OWN - not something that will refuse to start up one day if the company that built it experiences a massive network outage or if someone at that company decides that it's in their best interest to click an icon and disable my vehicle remotely. That's not ownership - that's feudalism and I don't want to participate in feudalism with my car. I want to own my car. I don't want it connected to some network sending information about my driving habits and receiving updates for its air/fuel ratio from some algorithm. I want a mechanical vehicle that I can get in and travel anywhere with roads (and some places without) at any time I want, for as long as I want so long as I'm' able to dump gasoline into the tank. Furthermore, I believe the value of fully mechanical vehicles is going to continue to go up over the next few years. We've seen the value of ALL functional classic cars DOUBLE over the past five years and I believe that trend is going to continue - probably to a point where a fully mechanical vehicle will be worth 10x what it is today within the next 20 years, simply because there will always be people who value the freedom that kind of a vehicle represents - probably not the general public but the upper 10% with plenty of disposable income will pay a hefty price for a well maintained and preserved classic car that isn't tied to the electric grid and can be serviced with basic hand tools.
