Spot on reminders and approaches to the game. I'd mention don't set unrealistic expectations. Ex. Can you start with a great start? Sure. But if you set out that is your expectation and don't meet it, it will grind on your mind. Also, my thoughts on trouble or scores are shots left = scores left. What those are is on you and attitude. Played Saturday. Was not a good start. Was plus 3 after 5. Did I question it? Of course, but I moved on, shots left = scores left. Finished the front with birdie on 9. +2 now. Carried that onto the back and thru 15 had battled back to +1. Faltered late but its golf. But I shot 75. Could have been 80 easy if I cashed it in. Love your honesty! Peace from Iowa!

@@BrisGolf Thanks. Yes. in my 45+ years of playing when I have been my best it involved work. Twice the practicing and drills vs playing. If I go to a new, or less familiar course, I will usually practice the par3 distances because those will matter. Par5s are usually out of reach these days for me so it's 80-90% a "transportation" shot to get me to wedge zone. Keep up the good work!

Early in the video you describe a hole that is almost exactly like hole 3 at my local course. Solid Tee shot with a driver puts you on the downslope of a gully to an elevated green 60 yards away. I see so many guys hit driver because they can “almost” drive the green but are left with very difficult 2nd shots. Lately, I’ve been hitting 5W or 4I to just beyond its 150 yard marker which is all flat and leaves a much better and easier shot to the green. Sometimes we have to put away ego and just play smart using good course management. One has to decide, what’s more important, long hits that have more risk, or smart choices that lower the score.

Greens at my course are 20m wide and 32m long. With ridges and hollows in them so lots of slope. We get to a par 3 with NTP prize and a tight pin cut in behind the deep front bunker. What is interesting is that its usually a high handicapper who wins NTP on hole for day. Rarely single figure players who Obviously play away from bunkers and water, even if it means hitting short and chipping on. Yes this playing away from trouble does put more pressure on long putting but work on it.

Just maybe a content-related question, if you could pinpoint ONE thing MOST amateur/average golfers either make a mistake on or it hinders their progress, what would that one thing be? I feel that most golfer-problems are related to what they do with their wrist on the backswing which in turn affects 70% of their total swing. At least for sure its my problem.
@BrisGolf

I think the one thing golfers do that hinders their progress is focusing on the ball flight too much. They will not take time to learn fundamentals and simple skills. The "BALL" won't allow it!!

I can't begin to tell you how bang on this is! I used to play this way all the time 13-16 years ago when I played regularly. I broke 90 more often than not, and scared 80 a couple of times. Hopefully, by the end of the year, I'll be back to doing the same thing. (Coming back after a 13 year layoff, and right now my elbow is sore. Gotta rest it. I'm getting old. Sigh.) Tee shots, 170-200 yards. That's me off the tee. 200 is the Driver. 170 is a 4 or 7 wood. I once broke 90 on a 6,000 yard plus set of tees hitting 7 wood on 13 of 14 tee shots. Tried the driver once. Sliced it into the rough, and made a double. The 13 seven woods, in the 160-190 range, were all in the fairway. That was the only double of the day, and I picked up a couple of pars. Play them like bogey is par, and par is birdie. Tee shot in play, advance your ball up to around the green, just like Michael says. Pitch on the green in one over regulation, then lag within 2-3 feet of the pin, and you get a lot of easy, low stress bogeys, and the odd par when you chip close or hit a green in regulation on a short hole, and you break 90. He's absolutely right. I've done it. A lot! Also, all those 10-30 foot putts you are going to give yourself with your simple short game shots onto the green? If you get good at lag putting and put all of those putts within 3 feet of the hole, a few will go in for you. Not many. But a few here and there will help. Par 5's are your friend, too, because if you just hit that simple tee shot in play, and another simple advancement shot, you are going to be in 9 iron to wedge range of the green for your 3rd shot a lot of the time. So you could hit a green or three. You might get a par or 2 out of the par 5's in your round. Finally, don't panic if you mess up a hole or two. Everybody does, most rounds. Don't press to get a really good score the next hole. Just get back on track by playing the next hole well, getting bogey, and staying patient. Same with bad shots. They happen. Just get back in play with a simple recovery, and continue from there. The occasional double bogey won't kill you, just like the occasional bogey doesn't hurt a scratch amateur or pro. It's the triples and quadruples that really kill the round. Avoid them by avoiding out of bounds, avoiding water, and playing SIMPLE, BASIC recovery shots from trouble. Just get out from under/behind those trees. Get our of that fairway bunker. Don't worry about advancing up close to the green. 1st, get out. 2nd, advance it if you can, even if it isn't far. Don't follow up one bad shot with a 2nd. That's what kills a hole. Stay calm. Don't panic. Stay patient, and stay simple. Save your bogey if possible, but if you get a double, it isn't the end of the world. Just avoid that really big number. Then move on and play the next hole simply and well. You don't need to drive it like Daly, scramble like Seve and putt like Gentle Ben to break 90. Stay calm, stay patient, and stay simple. The plan Michael just showed you works! I know. Back when I played regularly, I did it. A lot!

Short story from a GenXer and mom who hates the word boomer and if I ever found out my kids acted this way I would be kicking their behinds into next week. Anyway… our small local course which we play at probably 3-4 days every week, is being worked on after 35 years. Constant construction now for almost two years I would say. They are trying to make it a desirable course, bring it back to life. The crew were taking down trees and had an alternate cart path with an alternate tee box because they had just laid fresh sod on a tee box. These young guys drove through the closed cones/signage behind us. When we said “hey that tee box is closed” their exact words were “it don’t matter”. We harassed them enough with “show some respect” to get them to move that time but they were giant butts about everything else and finally just left I think. They don’t care about ball marks. They don’t care if they are putting divots on the greens or using the flag pole as a javelin. They are all just disrespectful little sh%^*.

Very curious what your thoughts are on the Moe Norman One-Plane Swing.
