Thanks man! Somehow the Labs Texture Baker of today cant bake vertex colors from within an HDA (in Unity and Unreal). But doing it like you show here does work. This was super helpful.

Awesome series. I hate Houdini for being so unesscesarily convoluted and have to learn it because that's where the money is. Like why would anybody need 5 lines of code to align 2 objects. In 3DsMax that's one click of a mouse. I hope SideFX chill out with proving that they are the most complex program its ok we got it its a nightmare. Your series are really great introduction and help me hate it little less. Thank you.

It is the opposite of complicated. It's actually really simple. Try doing this in Maya, it's much more involved.

@OlafFinkbeiner4 жыл бұрын
Sorry not that easy to explain in a sentence. I probably used a vop. In there a ramp. I would love to answer in more detail but not here. Are you on a forum where I can reach you?

Hi Olaf! Thank you for your video - I just discovered it. The orient attribute for copy instancing is poorly documented, still today. There are a lot of good Houdini tutorials out there nowadays (so different from the early years where learning resources were scarce). But you have a good sense of humor, and you take your time, which is more relaxing for viewers than having to pause the and rewind every 30 seconds to fully digest the denser materials in other videos. I too love Houdini. I first used its version 1.1 in 1997, but then almost never had the opportunity to use it again as my work took me to other packages. But the whole time, I missed it and now I spend some of my personal time picking up knowledge where I can. I will watch your other videos! Thank you again!
@OlafFinkbeiner5 жыл бұрын
Hi Malcolm, I really appreciate your comment. Thank you very much for the kind words. I think the @orient attribute and its uses are ultra cool. I dont mind using math and vex, but for geometric transformations using @orient it can be much more intuitive. I plan to do more about that soon(ish). And please keep commenting i really dig that. You made my day. Regards Olaf

over 5 secs vs ms is something to take in account when using python for complex/iterative operations.
@OlafFinkbeiner6 жыл бұрын
Sure. This is why I made the comparison. I know I said that this does not matter. What I wanted to say is that might not matter depending on what you are doing. Sometimes Python is still good even being much slower. For example if you use a python library that provides complicated functions. Or if the code only runs once. And thanks for commenting. Olaf
@AndreaLeganza6 жыл бұрын
I have to test in unity3d how these differences reported in houdini impact game performances where we should stay below 17ms to get 60fps.
@OlafFinkbeiner6 жыл бұрын
Now i think you get on a wrong thinking path here. Houdini Engine in Unity or Unreal is never used at runtime. So this is not an issue for frame rates when working with Houdini Engine in Unity. (Not easy to explain) lets say you have an Houdini HDA that produces a fence in unity. This fence will be created once and from there on it is just like any other geometry in unity.
@AndreaLeganza6 жыл бұрын
Mmm but exposing a variable in unity from houdini and changing on runtime has different impact on performances depending on the complexity of the underlying nodes.
@OlafFinkbeiner6 жыл бұрын
OK. Are we talking Houdini Engine in Unity? Maybe we talk about diffent stuff? Please give a real world exsample of what you want to do in Houdini/Unity?
@WWraven6 жыл бұрын
wow, Thanks alot Olaf...this video is actually a pretty good start for anyone wanting to get his head around Houdini at first...Sorting the programming languages like this is really helpful
