Hi Andre, thanks for commenting and asking. Let me say this much: I am nearly 50 years old and started with 3DStudio in DOS times. I am just starting to combine my Python and Houdini skills. I switched from 3dStudioMax to Houdini about 5 years ago because of Python. Funnily i just now got around to start with Python in Houdini. I just had to learn Houdini, VEX and Mantra first. I think i am in my 5th year in Houdini now. Houdini is not my daytime job tool, i work mainly on CAD/PLM related stuff in the automotive field. So i have the luxury of learning Houdini without project stress. Andre, what is your background?

I'm new to Houdini - only one month. Also learn Python. Background - Engineering and droject management background in radioengineering company (producing TV, MWO), and industrial automation OOP a little, Javascriptm PHP. But Python, ScyPy especially, houdini VEX are amazing tools for creating.Looking forward to start using it

over 5 secs vs ms is something to take in account when using python for complex/iterative operations.
@OlafFinkbeiner6 жыл бұрын
Sure. This is why I made the comparison. I know I said that this does not matter. What I wanted to say is that might not matter depending on what you are doing. Sometimes Python is still good even being much slower. For example if you use a python library that provides complicated functions. Or if the code only runs once. And thanks for commenting. Olaf

I have to test in unity3d how these differences reported in houdini impact game performances where we should stay below 17ms to get 60fps.

Now i think you get on a wrong thinking path here. Houdini Engine in Unity or Unreal is never used at runtime. So this is not an issue for frame rates when working with Houdini Engine in Unity. (Not easy to explain) lets say you have an Houdini HDA that produces a fence in unity. This fence will be created once and from there on it is just like any other geometry in unity.

Mmm but exposing a variable in unity from houdini and changing on runtime has different impact on performances depending on the complexity of the underlying nodes.

OK. Are we talking Houdini Engine in Unity? Maybe we talk about diffent stuff? Please give a real world exsample of what you want to do in Houdini/Unity?

VEX is important, Python for workflow related stuff can be of great help. But NO!

Hi Daim, glad you like my vids. I had to change my plan after talking to SideFX. I wanted to do some Mantra related stuff but i will wait for H17 for this. So the next video will be about HDAs and i hope i have time this weekend to record it. A few more are in the pipeline...
