So so thrilled to see someone else talking about Princess Jellyfish! It was one of the first mangas I ever read (in like sixth grade I think?) along with Noragami and they changed my brain forever

i'm hoping that we get a release date for the murderbot adaptation soon but if we DO, when it comes out i feel like there will be a lot of discourse about the fact that murderbot is being played by a conventionally attractive white man 🤔 i mean, there's already been discourse, but once the show comes OUT i expect there to be a new wrench thrown into the mix by the addition of people actively thirsting over murderbot

Something that Beverly Jenkins excels at is showcasing community in her books. I love her books where we see the FMC become a part of the local community. And you are one of the creators who finally convinced me to try The Count of Monte Cristo in 2025.

It was an excellent reading year for me too, but if I had to narrow it down my top 5 would have to be Impossible Creatures (I cannot recommend this enough, especially the audiobook, I just adore Samuel West’s reading of it), finally got around to reading Babel and Yellowface - both obviously fantastic, Queen Macbeth was a surprise gem, and Merry Inkmass was a delicious little treat for Christmas 🙂↕️

Pride and Prejudice and The Count of Monte Cristo are all-time favorites for me! One of my best friends just finished Braiding Sweetgrass and loved it (and it’s already on my TBR) so I’m going to try to get to it soon! I had a good reading year in 2024 and I’m glad you did too!

@@superjess89 the author narrates the Braiding Sweetgrass audiobook and I wish she could narrate every book I read ever!! The positive experiences I had with intimidating classics this past year has me eager to get into some new ones I’ve been avoiding :0

i LOATHED a far wilder magic by allison saft. all this build up and prep for a Big Hunt that lasted a couple of chapters plus a bunch of heavy handed Fullmetal Alchemist references only to realize WAIT this ENTIRE BOOK was a bad riza/mustang fanfic where mustang is an OPPRESSED FANTASY EQUIVALENT OF AN IRISH CATHOLIC

I couldn’t finish Girl In Pieces, I DNF’d it at 50%. As someone who struggles with mental health, I saw the book as very surface-level and the main character was someone who I could not root for because she was made to be pitied. I wanted to like it, but I couldn’t.

Biggest disappointment was V. Castro's Immortal Pleasures (even though I finished it rather than DNF'd). Literally all smut and cared less of the characters. She had an opportunity to make it a good vampire book, but damn.

One of my biggest disappointments was Pride and Prejudice in Space. You cannot convince me that book wasn't just Pride and Prejudice with space jargon thrown in for some razzle dazzle. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite novels, I DNF Pride and Prejudice in Space after the first chapter because it was sooo disappointing

it's wild how common these things were in 2024 that i have no doubt something will happen LOL we basically already have big 5 publisher using AI with harpercollins admitting to feeding 100k+ books into AI 🤡

I DNF'd The Stars Are Dying at like 33% That book made me feel like I was having a stroke. I kept rereading sections because I was certain I'd missed something. When one of the early important characters died and not only could I not tell how they were hit (based on the descriptions in the text of the room and placement of people) but I couldn't actually have cared less, I threw in the towel.

I remember when I first joined tiktok and the algorithm had figured out that I like books but not the types of bookish creators I prefer and I had a whole series of 17-19 year old ⚪️ girls recommending The Black Flamingo as "a book written in prose" and it just made me so tired to see them all copying this wrong thing.

this is my fantasy football 😔🙏 my hyper specific bets are that one of the Big 5 will push the AI bookfluencer and piss off all their content creators, AND that if the new Hunger Games book bombs there will be self pub Haymitch fic flooding the space right after as a sort of "I did it better" campaign

My worst read of the year was City of Gods & Monsters. It was so bad. I dnf’d at 12% and for some reason I was so nice and generous in my good reads review and in retrospect I shouldn’t have been. The Mmc is BORING and the FMC was unfortunately insufferable. The chosen one who doesn’t know she’s special. Blah blah blah. It was also pretty much a carbon copy of Crescent City (I didn’t know of the sjm controversy when I read that a few years ago) but it felt very close to plagiarism. My quickest dnf was Long Live Evil. The bookseller at barns and noble told me it was their best friends favorite book so I got it… one chapter in and a) I was so confused I thought had to have accidentally skipped a few pages or something b) IT WAS INSUFFERABLE and so boring

a feel like neil gaiman is going crawl out of hiding and release a novella that will basically be about the dangers of canceling poor, nice men. Also atleast three wattpad fics are going to be turned into Netflix movies.
