We saw the musical last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Up until this song, everything was done in good humour and then, wham, this song just floored me. Beautifully done and so effective. The sailors song at the end of act 1 also got me.

I love Javert maybe one of my favorite villains. Really because you could change nothing about him and he could easily be a hero. He's really just a servant of an unjust system but he's not such a bad guy. He believes in the system that he serves and does so honorably dutifully and loyally despite the fact that he has basically no sympathy towards the protagonists because he thinks they are little more than petty criminals.
