It's his love for the stars that makes him a sympathetic villain. He is our hero's enemy, he has flawed beliefs. But his love for the stars (by which he swears.) is what endears us to him.

JAVERT There, out in the darkness A fugitive running Fallen from grace Fallen from grace God be my witness I never shall yield Till we come face to face Till we come face to face He knows his way in the dark Mine is the way of the Lord And those who follow the path of the righteous Shall have their reward And if they fall As Lucifer fell The flame The sword! Stars In your multitudes Scarce to be counted Filling the darkness With order and light You are the sentinels Silent and sure Keeping watch in the night Keeping watch in the night You know your place in the sky You hold your course and your aim And each in your season Returns and returns And is always the same And if you fall as Lucifer fell You fall in flame! And so it has been and so it is written On the doorway to paradise That those who falter and those who fall Must pay the price! Lord let me find him That I may see him Safe behind bars I will never rest Till then This I swear This I swear by the stars! GAVROCHE That inspector thinks he's something But it's me who runs this town! And my theater never closes And the curtain's never down Trust Gavroche, have no fear Don't you worry, auntie dear, You can always find me here!

The fact that the books that BOTH of those musicals/movies were based on were written by the same guy (Victor Hugo) makes it even better!

The WORLDS of difference between 10 and 25. That being a Marius who does not disappear then the grown up pros start singing too. Also the first Javert who does not look like JVJ can break him like a twig.

Came here after watching Philip Quast’s concert in Hanoi. Sooooo lucky to have seen him live, performing this song. It’s every bit as powerful as this video, even with just the piano. ❤️

I like the way with these characters that they are both good, the conflict arises from where the ‘good’ comes from. Jean Valjean’s goodness comes from faith and Javert’s comes from order. Faith and Order, the conflict between the two.

Valjean, at last We see each other plain Monsieur le Maire You'll wear a different chain Before you say another word, Javert Before you chain me up like a slave again Listen to me, there is something I must do This woman leaves behind a suffering child There is none but me who can intercede In Mercy's name, three days are all I need Then I'll return, I pledge my word That I'll return You must think me mad I've hunted you across the years Men like you can never change A man such as you Believe of me what you will (Men like me can never change) There is a duty that I'm sworn to do (No) You know nothing of my life (24601) All I did was steal some bread (My duty's to the law, you have no rights) You know nothing of the world (Come with me 24601) You would sooner see me dead (Now the wheel has turned around) But not before I see this justice done (Jean Valjean is nothing now) (Dare you talk to me of crime) I am warning you Javert (And the price you had to pay) I'm a stronger man by far (Every man is born in sin) There is power in me yet (Every man must choose his way) My race is not yet run You know nothing of Javert I was born inside a jail I was born with scum like you I am from the gutter too

I keep coming back to this video because THIS is how Confrontation should have been in the video. Russell sounds great as Javert, and Hugh sounds so lively. The producers made some drastic mistakes in the movie, that we continue to litigate 15 years later.
