Raora... she's not wrong that it isn't cheddar but she is wrong that you can't get American cheese outside of the US. It's super easy to find in Japan, Korea for example. You can even buy it in Italy. Italians probably will turn their nose up at it but Sottilette is a brand or maybe the style of American-style cheese in Italy. It's just not called American Cheese anywhere outside the US.

Everyone has eaten cheese from Wisconsin, even Italians. Wisconsin produces more cheese than all of Italy, at 2.9 billion pounds per year (vs Italy which makes 2.5 billion pounds). And the US as a whole produces 11 billion pounds. And that production includes every type of cheese imaginable. It's not just cheddar. And a lot are extremely high quality, perhaps lacking the fame of Italian types, but easily holding their own when it comes to quality.
@cybernetic-ransomware1485Сағат бұрын
Still less than Germany or France. It's still about 1/10 of EU production (by Eurostat, 2020), and you know what, we have a free market. So I don't see any reason for transporting cheese halfway across the globe.

To be fair American cheese tastes great, but isn't real cheese. (It's made with milk itself rather than the curds.) And American Cheese can't be fermented (At least i don't think it can.) Also fun fact when I was little my mom would make "Grilled Cheese Sandwiches." And I thought she said "Girl Cheese Sandwiches." So I told her I wanted "Boy Cheese Sandwiches." Hahaha! I was a doofus! I don't remember much except laying in bed so sick in my room by myself, couldn't even move to go to the toilet so I ended up crapping my pants ruining my new mattress... Not fun... Also it was my birthday on the 5th or 6th day.. And the night dorm manager gave me a birthday cupcake and card and set it by my bedside table. So that made me feel a bit better. ^_^

Okay the problem is people conflate “American Cheese” with the American Cheese FLAVORED Kraft singles, and they think they’re the same thing. Kraft also makes Cheddar singles and Swiss singles, and they’re just as artificial as the American cheese ones. American Cheese is an actual CHEESE, culinarily engineered to COOK well and MELT well, and to intentionally have a mild flavor that compliments rather than overwhelms the food it’s paired with. It’s for cooking with and melting on sandwiches, not for eating on its own. So if you’re just comparing it bite for bite, MOST other cheeses have stronger flavor and will win in a head to head taste test. But melt cheddar on food and you get a bunch of oil. Swiss will melt but then turns into Swiss plastic when it cools. American cheese liquifies and stays that way, and mixes well with other ingredients without separating. It has its uses and it’s FINE. :P

Fun fact. You can actually get American cheese anywhere in the world there's a McDonald's. That includes Japan and China (both of which I've lived in) People probably don't think it's American cheese, but it is. It's usually an emulsion of cheddar, Colby, maybe some curds. It's actual cheese, but the individually wrapped ones are absolutely not, and are vile.

It bothers me that when most foreigners refer to " American Cheese" what they're ACTUALLY referring to is SPECIFICALLY Kraft American Cheese, those individually wrapped slices of cheese. Which yes is the worst, but that's not " American Cheese" there are actually good quality American Cheeses sold in whole blocks and they come in both yellow and white. The white American Cheese is the best of them all, but no, Kraft is not the one and only company that makes American Cheese

The Kraft singles literally aren't American cheese. If you look closely the label says something like "cheese product." It doesn't meet the legal requirements to be labeled American cheese.
@Corrael6 сағат бұрын
“American” cheese is usually just cheddar melted and pasteurized using Sodium citrate. It’s mild, pliable, and melts evenly, which makes it great for sandwiches and burgers, but it loses a lot of the texture and some of the taste of real cheddar. The big benefit for American pasteurized cheese is that it’s much more shelf stable.

Which we DO also make, its just not always gonna be in supermarket chain.

You overrate your significance just slightly. :P Outside of the Midwest, most cheese are sourced locally. I live in New England and Vermont dairy is the root source of most of the cheeses sold in my local grocery stores and even in the local Walmart. It's more economical to source locally than to ship from thousands of miles away, so it makes sense.

Then you better not ever eat anything with cheese sauce like a Philly cheese steak or mac and cheese. It is basically the same thing. American processed cheese is just cheddar milk and sodium citrate. You are not supposed to just eat it straight, it is designed to melt easy for sandwiches.

I mean, cheese made in the USA is shipped all over the world, she has probably had cheese made in the USA before. Any cheese she buys in Japan is likely made in the USA. She later went on to mention the American cheese slices on burgers, so she realized what they are. She likely has seen them on sale before, they likely just are not called the same thing. Also, I am pretty sure Kiara has never said US chocolate tastes like vomit. We have told her about the butyric acid on stream before and I do not believe she ever said it tastes like vomit, and she has talked about it and found it interesting, but I do not think she said it tastes like that. She certainly did not say that when she ate the chocolate pop tarts. Afaik she has just that she does not like it. Could be a lot of reasons why she does not like it. But I could be wrong, there are a lot of streams.

American milk chocolate tastes like vomit. It's because the first process that made milk chocolate possible (since milk tend to spoil) used butyric acid. Americans got used to that taste during WWII, since that was the chocolate distributed to the troops, and kept on using that method when better became available. Cheese made in the US instead tend to be tasteless, since it's made of pasteurized milk. However an American cream cheese, Philadelphia, is wildly popular in Italy (but the taste and consistency of the one sold in Italy are quite different from that sold in the US). So much popular infact that Raora probably doesn't know it's American.
