Germany tried to build a navy to rival Britain but parked most of it across the North Sea from Britain. At a local level, Britain was going to be outgunned. It was a strategic threat to Britain, which forced them to build more ships to restore parity in the North Sea. Germany then built a bigger navy in response to British growth. I am not saying who was right or wrong but it seems a little odd to portray one side as more rational than the other. In any arms race, both sides have motivations that in their own minds are valid.

tbf, the only reason they're different countries is that the kingdom of Austria didn't want to let go of Hungary when the rest of the splintered German kingdoms, duchies, countships, etc. united to a nation state in the 1800s. So they had to decide between including a considerable number of people who didn't identify as German (which went against the purpose of the nation state and was expected to cause trouble later) or excluding the German people living in Austria. It ended up being the latter.

The Austrian Empire and the German Empire were two entirely separate countries, so no, they aren't the same place. Austria only became a part of Germany when the Germans invaded them and took them over.

@@sasi5841 the "back then" argument doesnt really work for germany, because the political map changed a lot over the centuries. what is known as germany today is an amalgamation of several different large tribes (we talk territories the size of small countries) with different culture and similar, but still different languages. hell, some of us stem from the franks. the majority of what used to be prussia is now polish. etc. etc.
