To anyone who wonders how good magnum heads are. I ported a set of EQ magnum heads using the stock valve sizes (1.92, 1.62) but longer stems to facilitate the use of PAC beehive springs. I didn't do any chamber mods. I also ported a Eddy RPM intake. Using a custom ground Bullet hyd. roller cam with .545 valve lift, my son's 360 cranked out 365 HP and 415 Tq at the wheels in a 74' Duster. That's well over 400 hp and approaching 500 tq. at the crank. So I've been told. Although the powerband is all done by 6K rpm, it is impressive for my kid's first street car.

The reason those adjusters are drilled is so you can run LA rocker shafts with LA heads on a magnum block. And you'll have to do some work to them.But what do you expect for 200 bucks?If you can't even buy stamp steel shit for that

You do know Richard Holdener and the engine masters guys have both shown the magnum doesn't gain almost anything over 29 degrees. You seem to think these are like chevy's. The magnum's have very efficient combustion chambers and don't need tons of timing.
@ThirteenTwentyRepair2 ай бұрын
I talk with Richard off and on as well as look at a lot of data from the microsquirt community. They absolutely make gains out to 36 degrees, I do concur that they are more efficient and that explains the gains dropping off after 36 degrees and not running out to 40 degrees like the older LA heads. The 29 degrees may hold true for a stock cam application, but once you start making modifications it will help to get out to that 34-36 degree range.

Why go through the work to drill out the block instead of just getting the oil through pushrod shaft mount rockers that several companies offer now?
@ThirteenTwentyRepair2 ай бұрын
Oil through pushrods work when swapping magnum heads on an LA block, they won’t provide proper oiling for shaft mount LA rockers, although I have seen people modify and drill the pushrod cup to try and reverse feed the shaft. The LA head swap on a magnum block is to use a wider selection of both LA heads and LA intake manifolds.
@aaronbarnes89382 ай бұрын
@@ThirteenTwentyRepair yeah I'm going to disagree with you because I've done multiple aluminum la-headed engines on Magnum blocks using oil through pushrod rocker arms comp cams, prw, Harland sharp, Speedmaster all offer oil through push rod shaft mount rockers and they work just fine. Matter of fact there's several guys running these and high horsepower boosted applications with no issues.

Just curious as to why would you want to use L.A. heads? Im running a 5.9 magnum in a barracuda, it has the mopar r/t heads and cnc porting by hughes, m1 intake, demon carb and its a 4speed. This car is a monster compared to a 70 340 4 spd duster. The magnum heads are awesome, the Aussie replacements are even better. Just curious.. also the m1 intake works well on the Street and would work even better with fuel injection and/or boost. The m1 magnum version has injector bosses cast in as well.
@ThirteenTwentyRepair2 ай бұрын
This is a cheap project with a $150 shortblock, $800 speedmaster heads (Black Friday sale) and an eBay $150 gt45. The R/T heads are a great head, the Aussie if you are referring to old EQ’s (I thought it was New Zealand??) were a great head, the new EQ’s are a 100% stock replacement head no matter how someone tries to spin an advertisement, I have a few of them and can confirm they are stock replacements, I even broke through a bowl when trying to port to 89% of a 2.02 valve in an intake bowl. Most of the reason for guys to swap to LA heads are intake manifold selection and roller rocker price and selection. I have a magnum M1 for my 408” but they are hard to find and usually priced around $1000. In comparison I paid $150 for this LA M1 on eBay and $200 for the Holley intake. 🍻

I've hurt a bunch of Magnum 318 blocks! 20+ psi of boost will do that (actually the wrong flex plate had done more damage than the boost, I have yet to hurt a piston or rod)! I'm working on a fixture so that a Magnum may be drilled for LA oiling that I plan on having done in a month or two. Almost all of my block have had the cracks around the head bolts, I just slam the studs in and I have not had any problems.

I had a really sweet running 1981 New Yorker that I parted out, and the 318 was complete and ready to install in anybody's A-body or Volare/Aspen. A friend who was detuning his D150 begged me and made me a cash offer I couldn't refuse for the engine. He was pulling a 340 out, so I told him to swap the pan and don't go f*cking around with the internals. He wanted it back bone stock for a daily with MPG and good driveability. So what does he do? Tears it down and puts the pistons in Purple Power degreaser and finds deck cracks like yours has (not an issue!), and wants his money back. He later decided to put it back together, and took the pistons out of soak and they looked like Briggs and Stratton 3.5hp pistons that were melted!! DUMB MOTHERF*CKER!! Don't sweat the radial deck cracks, I was a dealer tech and built many, many 318s with the same cracks and they run fine with no leaks!

every head we've ever opened, regardless of brand has issues that need attention. You never use them out of the box. I don't care who the brand is. These heads out flow stock magnums by 40-45cfm. 5-15 cfm at low lift numbers. the 360 magnum in our 79 Ramcharger (stock except a Hughes 208/214 cam, carbed)picked up 21/26 to the wheels over factory heads, that was minor clean up and setting valve height, no porting. they aren't a race head but can be ported to flow as much as TF190. for 2/3 the cost when you figure in the rockers needed to use those on a magnum engine.
