hello, because of you, I bought 4 Eko's lol 😅, one modern Eko Ranger 6 vintage reissue, one Kay KD-28 (which is an Eko ranger made for the famous Kay brand ) and the third is a Ranger 6 late 60's and the 4th is the same early 70's (according to your description) I love them all, you made a very good review ,. I must add to render to Cesar what belongs to Cesar that the new Ranger reissue is of better construction, better finish and weights 150 grams lighter (with 2.4 kilo instead of 2.6) , because it uses plain wood instead of multi layers of plywood for the neck pocket. It sounds also great, same family sound as its old sisters. Thank you Mate. Greetings from Belgium

Thank you - we so glad we inspired you to buy so many Eko's - they are great guitars. The newer far east constructed Eko's although we agree is superb don't think they have quite quite the same mojo as the Italian built examples and sound in terms of woods, the heavy finish, and the build which give the vintage examples a deeper more distinctive tone . Modern Rangers are built brilliantly using modern mass production techniques, finishes, and can end up playing extremely well - but to my ear anyway - not that distinctive - to like any other brand coming out of the far east. Anyway that just my view - great comment though and very much appreciated. @@sunhotband I totally agree, the modern Ranger though built very well and being a great performer, doesn't have that vintage mojo nor that inimitable vintage tone... even if much louder . My four Eko's are all different built so they don't overlap one an other, this make sens in a collection, I noticed that the late 60's version compares to the early 70's is of better quality, the neck is made of 5 pieces instead of only 3 , cheaper to built so, the bridge has also different position for the rivets and the bridge nut is made out of bone, the other is cheap plastic, for the rest, almost identical. I don't have the latest version from the 80's as you have. Keep up the great work, I sub by the way :)

Thank you for comment - I know there is a lot or references that say 1987 for the release of the DX7 MK 2 but my understanding is that it was released in December 1986 ready for Christmas - yamahablackboxes.com/collection/yamaha-dx7ii-fd-synthesizer/ - although there is a lot of conflicting information about its release date - December 1986 seems to be confirmed by Yamaha - but we could be wrong - let us know if find out any more - one thing we can agree on is that the DX7 sure is a great classic instrument. Thank you - so much appreciated - glad you enjoyed it - ❤ you're comment is so inspiring to us and means a great deal - especially coming from someone like yourself in the industry. We get asked a lot - why cant we hear a studio recorded version of our songs like “Virtual Armageddon”, that we wrote sometime ago now about Ukraine (renamed - No Way Back ? for KZbin), and our many other newer songs like those in this video montage of one of our latest performance kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3qlaWtvoJx9atU . That's because our strategy as a new artists, is to concentrate on initially, honing our performances and skills, growing our songbook - now up to 2 whole albums worth of banging no filler numbers, and resist the lure of mostly vanity views on paid streaming platforms, and to only release free non commercial demos and live performance videos on free to view platforms like KZbin only, until we can secure a future paid contract to record our material in the real world - so hoping eventually that our offering to a manager, label, or producer, gives them certainty and proof of ability, and confidence in our work, and so is alluring, is much less risky, more commercial advantageous, and interesting for them to get involved and invest in us - all while insuring that no other artist can take advantage and use our material under compulsory licence, and cover it legally, until we commercially finally record and release it ourselves. So for now other than live performance, acoustic unplugged solo’s, and our early demo videos that we have shared on our socials - that's all you can hear of our all original work at the moment, all while maintaining Sun Hot Band’s U.S.P. that has been to only ever have, and will, play our own original music - I think we might be the only band to have ever done this ? So glad you enjoyed or music - thank so much again for the kind comment - don’t forget to tell all you know about us, and if you haven’t already to Subscribe to keep abreast of our new work - All the very best - Marlowe, Morgan and Warren - SUN HOT BAND

what brand of headset mic is that? i want to buy one
@sunhotband
@sunhotband 26 күн бұрын
The mic used in the video we purchased at Maplins - they've gone bust now, and it was their own ProAmp brand of radio mic transmitter receiver all 1/4" Jack input output and the headset was in the pack - if have a search on Ebay might be able to get a second hand one still. The mic was good for quick set up outside windy locations and was reliable although a little limited in its sonic range - the rest of the band liked me singing with it - said it made my performance more dynamic - not not so stuck to a mic stand so may inspire me to use a headset mic again when we gig. For a sixties instrument they we're and still are not that valuable - so maybe not such a great loss as you think - as being a budget instrument they we're limited in tone and playability - nevertheless many people bought them as their first instrument so they have more of a nostalgic following as I don't think an bands of note played them. Highway one Strats are really cool as long as they don’t have that big goofy headstock. I’ve two Strats, 2002 and 2004, two Teles, 2005 and 2007.
@sunhotband
@sunhotband Ай бұрын
I know what you mean - I'm kind of ambivalent - about the larger headstock - I think it can look cool on a more reliced instruments as I thinks its the older design - not so good on a newer more mint example. Indeed I have a great looking very beat up Squire Strat Affinity that a school had thrown out that I rescued from a bin, and have been relic-ing up ever since that has the larger headstock. Ironically one of my favourite guitars not because of the headstock but sounds and plays extremely well. Have owned and traded Tele's myself - love their tone but find the bodies a little more uncomfortable to play than the Strat shape - so never really got into them much. Anyway agree with you - I like Strat too - just got a very cool Acoustasonic Strat - that Fender UK helped me out with - and is SUN HOT BAND's new lead guitar - gives our numbers a unique voice and ability to go acoustic to electric during a number - as I'm the only guitarist as we are a trio is invaluable. Check out my recent solo performance playing some of the bands original number on my Start Acoustasonic - the audience went wild for it - link here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYmven2ZmsuGqKs. You're right budget guitars of this era seldom played well out of the box - and these guitars good looks rarely matched their tone, playability & versatility. That said set up correctly and if you play the right genre then they work great - but definitely not the best choice to learn to play on - it is was it is - made an interesting project and video to restore - so many people had these - sold it on to a guy who had one when he was young and wanted for nostalgia to get one again. Hello, Thanks for the video, Wow! What a lot of detailed information. it was very informative and much appreciated. I have a question that i was hoping you could help me with. I recently purchased an Eko ranger 6 from a thrift store. Needed a lot of cleaning. It's in great condition, that i can tell. My question is, does this guitar (generally speaking) have a lot of sustain? This guitar has a lot. Like a lot. My best description woud be. Who else is playing in the room with me? The sound isn't muddy, its kinda musical. Listening to your video i hear that both guitars project but i am not sure about sustain. I am listening from my phone so i am not sure. I know you must be very busy, i appreciate anything you would like to share. Thank You!!
@sunhotband
@sunhotband 2 ай бұрын
🤔When you say sustain - is it a welcome voice of your guitar or an annoyance to you ? If it is the latter - the riveted bridges of these guitars wings tend to lift and the gap with the top creates unexpected reverberance and unwanted resonance which can be cured by wicking some glue under the bridge wings to stop them moving - or possibly there is a loose internal brace, or even sympathetic string resonance after the nut.

@@sunhotband First, I apologize for the thumbs down on the response you gave to my comment. It was unintentional, I meant to leave a" LIKE 😊 " again, so sorry about that. I wanted to leave a positive response till I could message my thanks, woops. Thank You!! At this point it isn't being annoying. It is still very much in the clean up stage, I am just so happy it's playable. When I found it, it had four(all different colors)coats of acrylic paint on the top, side, fretboard, neck even the headstock. It was a pretty art project but I thought it was a waste of an instrument and couldn't leave it. 98% of the paint is gone, I just have to get the paint out of all the nooks and crannies. When i couldn't resist any longer I put strings on it. Oh, and it played!! A pretty bright sound without sounding tinny. A luthier told me beforehand the frets need leveling and there would probably be some fret buzz and there is but it isn't bad, i just have to pay close attention and place my fingers close, close, close to the frets, which is the proper way, but i am lazy and generally don't. Well like I said, I am just happy it's plays AND has a pretty sound. The information you gave me, makes feel better about possible problems in this area. I greatly appreciate you for taking the time to respond. Your video was very very informative, if I haven't subscribed already, I will after leaving this comment. Have a great Day!!

@@delorissamuelson6988 Sounds like quite a project - I have owned several and they all needed some adjustment even the mint ones to get playing nice - they were well built by Eko, but a lot were never set up correctly. A lot of fret buzz on Rangers although can be unlevelled frets - that was one thing generally Eko got right - I would examine the neck to body angle - which is the source of fret buzz lot of the time. Thankfully the bolt on neck means that a neck reset is relatively easy to remove fret buzz, if you know what you are doing - and involves constructing some thin card shims to create the correct neck angle - so the bridge to nut string height above the frets is correct. I say this is more likely from my experience - but could also be that the action is just to low and this can be easily adjusted by raising the bridge. Good luck with your Eko, and many thanks for the interesting comments - all the very best Marlowe - SUN HOT BAND 🙂

I have owned an Eko Ranger 12 - 1967 I think, for nearly 50 years. It is far and away my favourite accoustic guitar. Yes, the sustain is real. I have also just purchased a 1968 Ranger VI and I'm waiting on delivery. I'm willing to bet right now that there is little difference between them. (apart from the extra 6 strings).

Agree there are certainly a lot of sixties and seventies period guitars of the like of Burns, Hofner, Eko etc. not to mention the plethora of Japanese built retailer badge up guitars that you would think deserve more recognitions and higher prices. Unfortunately what I have learned as many have passed through my hands is that surprisingly many have been little or even not played at all - no fret wear etc. - at its usually because they do play very well without a great deal of set up, modifying, or messing around with, and even then they may not all have a limited tonal pallet and usefulness. There are a lot of cool looking vintage instruments that have over complicated bridge and vibrato / whammy bars that make their tuning unstable, but were snapped up at the time by eager novice players just because they looked cool. The vintage US guitars of Fender and Gibson often do not look as cool, as many a competitors offering of the time, but what they got right was they’re simple reliable designs, that set up easy, and generally their more stable hardware made them a must have for the bands and artists of the period ensuring their use by others, and establishing a standard sound which then led to the demand and higher prices we see nowadays. I’ve just acquired a very similar period offering from Hofner to the Broadway - a early 60’s Hofner Colorama, that I must admit even though very similar in period and construction, sounds and plays a lot better than the Broadway. Hope to be doing a video on it shortly as will be listing for sale - as it vintage guitar trading is my side hustle - that helps keep SUN HOT BAND afloat and making music - Please don’t forget to like comment and most importantly Subscribe - it really helps our work and take a look at our all original music - link here kzbin.info/www/bejne/iauyepR-oq2dfrc - all the very best Marlowe - Sun Hot Band.

Nice informative video, thank you. I have the same body style as the 60s, but neck of the later guitar in your video (with the same golden decal inside, same sound hole pattern and same bridge shape but the painted headstock). I'm not sure if that's a quirky factory fit or not, however it was inherited from my late father and is the inspiration of my attempts to learn. I've had it gone over professionally so it's all straight and true regardless. While it was a value guitar of it's time, it feels like you could take it to war and it would come back without a scratch. What gauge strings are you using? I'll never let it go, so I aim to do it justice and play an open mic one day at least.

I personally use Light 0.012 , 0.016, 0.024, 0.032, 0.042, 0.053 Round wound Phosphor bronze on my Ranger and my other acoustics. I now this is going to guitar heresy but I always buy budget brands and find they play and sound just as good, and last the same as the more expensive ones. From my experience learning way back now, - keep up with learning guitar - it takes time to reach a level before you really enjoy playing - but keep going - it so worth it! - Please don't forget to like and Subscribe and tell all you know about our all original music - All the very best - Marlowe - SUN HOT BAND

So, thanks to this video I found out my Eko Ranger is a 1960's one :) It used to belong to my dad who sold it to his cousin in the 70's and then I got it from him in 90's. I hadn't looked at it in years as I'm re-learning on electric after a Hiatus of twenty odd years.... Also and i know it's not relevant, I discovered the old whitish coloured Marshall combo I bought off my dad's old band mate back in 1996 that was stuffed behind a door is in fact a very rare late 80's 50W 25th silver Jubilee model. I suddenly feel incredibly grateful and lucky

I want to buy that guitar, my older brother had one when I was really young, it was the first guitar I ever saw in real life and have wanted one ever since, he was disabled and didn’t look after it at , unfortunately we don’t know what happened to it it was over 50 years ago now.

Unfortunately if you meant to enquire about the actual unboxed P2 in the video - I sold it sometime back now. However there are many similar nice examples that are either for sale now or come up regularly for sale on sites like Ebay & Reverb just search for Eko P2. They were very popular low budget student instruments back in the day - and Peter Sellers literally wore one in his film to cover his modesty in a nudist colony scene in the movie "A shot in the dark" KZbin link to the scene here kzbin.info/www/bejne/rorJqZWlh9l-gKc which made it even more popular I suppose - hope that helps. Thanks again Marlowe, I will be following your progress. Keep recording, all us musicians have to stick together. I currently record under the alias Sebastian Vandalproof and have a few acoustic originals on KZbin also. I was just wondering if you ever use that Eko Ranger to perform with as these have such a unique sound quality. Keep writing as I also manage to fill up enough material for more albums, they are fun to make and the evolution of your music will change, it just keeps getting better and better.✌@@sunhotband

I have used both my Eko Ranger 6 and 12 to perform in the past - but not so much now as although my Ranger 6 does have a a passive pickup installed - for live performances of the type we get where set up time is non existent you play then you're off - I prefer to use my Lava Me 2 carbon fiber as it is more stable, has a better pickup arrangements, hence tone for the sort of live gigging we do at the moment - and can be played in the full heat of the summer. That said I do use the Rangers for recording still - indeed I have just completed recording our brand new single "The Rain" on which I used my Eko ranger 12 for many parts. You're absolutely right about keep going with writing - Thank you so much for support and kind words - all the very best Marlowe SUN HOT BAND @raypitcher9767

Looking back you're absolutely right - we we're certainly we're raw back then, we had a songbook book of all original songs, but nowhere to play, so we set up outside and played to people drinking in the Pub opposite - did that almost 3 years back now - pushing the limits of what was essentially banded here in the UK at the time of the Pandemic - which was to play live music to the public, even got asked when we did it one time to stop by the police as we were drawing a crowd! My brother Morgan - the drummer - who I think was 12 at the time has argued to take this down as he is embarrassed about his playing - but it documents our development, and loads of people seem to like it. To be fair he was was using a dd55 back then with these horrible light plastic rubber button piezo, bass and hi hat pedals, that move all the time or misfire, he has got much better in the years since and has proper weighted pedals and an upgraded dd75 - in fact we played very near to hear last summer at the Worthing Festival stage - link hear - kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5vddaCNateGhsU check it out - think we're much better now but still room for improvement though ! - all the very best Marlowe SUN HOT BAND

I have the cousin to this one being the Rio Bravo Eko, and had to alter it for left hand playing. I wanted to purchase one of these Rangers also but at present I don't think there are any left handed models on the market which is a huge shame. The sound is unique and any match to a more expensive guitar, they simply hold their own as a timeless classic. Can't fault them in any way, well built and if you own one you'll have it for life.

Left handed Ranger 6's we're manufactured but will be rare and difficult to find - you could always do the same as with your Rio Bravo and convert a right handed one with a new nut, bridge saddle and additional left pick guard. An Eko Rio Bravo is a good instrument and very similar to the Ranger though. Glad you enjoyed the video don't forget to subscribe - good luck in your quest to find a lefty Ranger - all the every best Marlowe, Morgan & Warren SUN HOT BAND

@@sunhotband Many thanks for your advice on the guitar, yes, it could be altered but the pick guard leaves a mark as I've tried this one and I had to remake a new one to compensate this part. Luckily the shape of the bridge is rounded and quite unique it hasn't affected the pitch of the low E string at all. The nut has to be curved due to the design and made to measure, but I did carve one from bone. Yes, I have subscribed and will be checking out your Band, the very best of luck with it, we musicians have to stick together .

I picked up one of these the other day. Restrung it with light strings but the low E and A strings seem too big and so don't fit into the slot at the end of the neck causing them to sound out of tune when pressed. Might need to get some extra light or maybe file it down a bit so they fit.
@sunhotband
@sunhotband 6 ай бұрын
That's very unusual for a P2 as the nut slots are normally more than adequate as it has a zero fret arrangement. If they are binding in the nut and are the E and A - Simply use an old E and A string of the gauge you're using pull it taunt and carefully run it back and forth through their respective nut sluts a few times - as a file - should open them up a bit and then should not bind and should be fine. Hope that helps - don't forget to subscribe - and check out our SUN HOT BAND all original music - all the very best SUN HOT BAND
