What a pleasure to see how things have changed since I lived in Winnipeg in 2001-2002! I recall how Mikael Colville-Andersen with his Copenhagenize consultancy was collaborating with Winnipeggers a decade or so ago on planning better bike infrastructure, something I didn’t have in my time there. I was one of the very, very few people who travelled by bike in Winnipeg that near-quarter-century ago from where I lived in South Osborne to my teaching job at the University of Manitoba at the south end of town or north into Osborne Village, The Forks, and Downtown. This being Winterpeg, I got to experience not only the regular -30 (where °C and °F meet!) in the depths of winter but the occasional heavy snowfall (which I was already used to from living in Montreal and Ottawa). I’d been using my bikes since the early 1980s as my regular way of getting around, but after spending the 2000-2001 winter months in Leiden, I was ever more encouraged to bike everywhere when I arrived in Winnipeg. I started off my first day at work on the day that stunned the world in early September 2001, trying out a safe route along the intimidating Pembina highway (100% 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙮) by following the back alleys behind the stores lining its east side until the Lagimodière overpass, taking the sidewalk the rest of the way to the campus. I continued that route through the winter, and did my best to navigate the less hospitable winter streets travelling north along Osborne (once getting screamed at by one driver while pedalling through the slushy edge of the road to avoid the cars whizzing by me in the cleared portion of the road. After those experiences where 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 was tailored to the needs of people on bikes, I was really glad to see the news of Mikael’s work with bike advocates in Winnipeg; I’ll have to take a look at Patty Wiens’ videos to see how things have improved!

At 50:13 I can see why the other bikes would confuse you but you missed the bike crossing with the shark teeth and crossed at the pedestrian crossing (it was funny because you guys commented right after on it being pretty intuitive when you’d got it wrong, but you’ll get used to it and we locals will occasionally mess up these things too 😊)

I was too late to follow this evening’s premiere live. By now, John is very well-versed in pointing out all sorts of details about Dutch traffic infrastructure and explain them to novices… He has learnt from the best! What is especially fascinating to me are two things. One is being blown away by something we consider totally normal. The ‘translation’ into North American minds and brains is crucial. Also, John always makes it look like everything infrastructure overhere is miles ahead of what you guys have and experience on a daily basis. As if there are no traffic problems over here. But our problems are mostly so different from yours that highlighting them serves no real purpose
@ActiveTowns12 сағат бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words! Sorry, you weren't able to join us for the Premiere. I did gain a certain level of satisfaction in pointing out and lingering at a pretty massive STROAD to point out that all is not perfect. Have a wonderful week. Cheers! John
@reneolthof68113 сағат бұрын
@@ActiveTowns I am obviously not a supporter of massive STROADS, but it is only fair to point out that this street is part of the city network for cars, where cars are prioritised. So at least there is some reasoning behind the madness!
@ActiveTownsСағат бұрын
Yep. And I suppose time will tell whether any of these STROADs will continue to exist in cities that are committed to improving and enhancing the health, wellbeing, and vitality of its inhabitants and its economy. High speed, high volume traffic sewers ripping through cites create so many negative externalities for the masses in exchange for the convenience of a relatively small group of individuals. We can prioritize people or we can prioritize cars but we can’t do both. #streetsareforpeople
@reneolthof6811Сағат бұрын
@@ActiveTowns While I obviously agree with your standpoint intrinsically, it's also a matter of how to achieve this goal. I am a strong advocate of realistic pricing, and certainly not of banning any form of transportation. And by realistic pricing I mean putting the TRUE price tag on all forms of transportation, direct AND indirect. I strongly feel that in the end pricing is what ultimately matters most to people. No fuel tax in the aviation sector is a perfect example of what's wrong with the currrent pricing.

1) Although there were a few parents that came to pick up their children from school by car, there were a lot of bicycles. Which means that a lot of children come by bike, either on their own or with a parent. 2) Jason Slaughter has a video about continuous sidewalks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4DJc6OHnLGLi8U 3) Another major contributor to safe streets is that drivers are also cyclists. They consider cyclists to be fellow road users. In the US cyclists are considered sitting ducks and an afterthought when it comes to street design. 4) In one, maybe a few, of his videos Jason mentions the concept of main network. That stroad is part of the main network for cars. There is also a main network for bicycles. A main network consists of streets that are designed according to the traffic that the municipality wants on those streets. 5) Safety through separation.

In the nineties they/we used pavers for bike paths. Tree roots and soil sinking can ruin a new surface pretty easily. Pavers are cheaper and easier to repair.
@ActiveTowns17 сағат бұрын
Yeah, there are clearly pros and cons either way. Since 2022, I've noticed that many municipalities globally are striving to find a strategic balance between the red asphalt cycle paths and more permeable surfaces, as well as the placement of rain gardens to handle more of the stormwater runoff. I live in Amersfoort and I would have loved to welcome Active Towns too, but unfortunately on that particular day I wouldn't have been able to. I often cycle in the places where you were. A few comments. First, the 4 lane road near the centre (Stadsring) is still a remnant of the car centric thinking of the 60-ies and 70-ies. We are trying to bring it back to 2 lanes and turn the sides back into water, just like it was originally. I avoid it as much as I can. Second, would I call Amersfoort part of Randstad? Probably not. I is too far to the east. Third, I like your observations about South Limburg. I come from there. I grew up in the dialect, but I had to spread my wings on a day. I didn't get all that far, but I like it here more than over there, although I still like come back once in a while.
