Not much of the network is electrified. Trains going further away from the city are all diesel. They are due to be electrified soon though.

Yes, I agree. Diesels and electrics are not bad but they are dull in comparison to steam. I am old eough to have seen large busy stations in the 1960s almost completely worked by steam. Heaven! And you might see over ten classes of loco in the one day!

Its for the signal overlap. This happens when a train is signaled into platform 5 at the same time that a train is leaving from platform 6. The train on 6 has to take the right hand route. It can only take the left route if the train on 5 has come to a complete stop.

@williampower44335 жыл бұрын
Thanks Seamus. Glad you liked the video. However, the description below the title photo explains where the trains were coming from and going to, apart from the permanent way vehicle (EM 50). It came from the east and obviously went to Galway and then came back heading east without stopping. I noticed that the DMUs have no destination showing at the front. That was two years ago. Today the destination is usually displayed. Click on "SHOW MORE" underneath the description (or maybe you have done that). Regards, William.

Thanks. You ask the same questions for each video I publish and I can only answer for Athenry, where I live. Being retired, I am not a frequent rail traveler. I am not a regular visitor to Connolly station so I do not know if it was particularly busy or not. Considering it was prior to the evening rush, it seemed fairly busy to me. I left Connolly at about 16.10, so I imagine it would have been very busy an hour later. I might go up another day when I have more time and get some videos of the Belfast trains.

I never did a black & white version of a movie before. I was just curious to see what it looked like. It's actually not bad at all. It's different anyway. I just turned the colour saturation all the way down to zero and increased the contrast a bit. Maybe there is a better way of doing it.

Thanks for your comments. Here in Ireland we don't have a great variety of trains and liveries compared to the U.K. or other European countries. Some lines do not have any freight trains at all. The population of the whole island is around 6.5 million.

Lovely Scenes William!😃.Did many board and alight the stopping Train Services at Portarlington and Kildare Town Train Stations?.Are Portarlington and Kildare Town Train Stations used much?.
@williampower44335 жыл бұрын
I think Portarlington is used by customers to transfer to other trains when they want to travel further. I am not a regular visitor to the station but I would imagine there would be some local people and commuters using the trains also. As you can see from the videos of the stopping trains at Kildare, a fair few people come and go. There seems to be a trickle of customers all the time. I left the station just before the evening rush, so I missed that. I imagine it's busy between 17.30 and 19.30. Probably the same in the morning.

Not too many passengers on this train, but some. It was a Thursday; probably a lot more on the following day, Friday. Can't give you details of the passenger figures between Athenry and Ennis, but on Fridays the train size is now usually doubled to four coaches. A recent report (12/April) from Irish Rail says passenger numbers on the Galway-Limerick route are increasing yearly. The figure for 2018 was 387,408 and they expect the 2019 figure to reach 420,000 (estimate).

As far as I can recall there were few passengers getting on or off, but bear in mind that it is a local working from and to Galway on a public holiday. On a working day I expect it would be busier as it is used by commuters and shoppers living in the Athenry area.

In this instance there were some seats available on both trains. However, often these days there are too few coaches on the Dublin-Galway services, with people standing. Last Thursday I caught the 15.05 ex-Galway and there were only four coaches, all full and maybe 50 people standing. It was a good thing I was alighting at Athenry. Is there a shortage of coaching stock? The Galway-Limerick trains seem to have more passengers these days, with the train extended to four coaches most weekends (instead of the usual two).

@williampower44336 жыл бұрын
Thanks. As far as I can see the Galway-Limerick service is busy between Galway and Athenry, and also between Ennis and Limerick, but the section in between is not so busy. A number of commuters in Athenry use the service to get to and from Galway city. The 11.25 train from Dublin was nearly 15 minutes late arriving at Athenry. This delayed both the Galway-Dublin train and the Galway-Limerick train (to a lesser extent). Yes, there was an unusually large crowd going from Athenry to Galway. Hope they all got seats! They seemed to take a long time to board the train, which was frustrating to watch, considering that the train was already late. The footage is a bit contrasty. It was shot in 4K, but the software I use to edit it is not really up to the job. I had some problems converting it to HD

William Power Thanks for the Information!.What about the Passenger Loadings on the Western Rail Corrider?.
@williampower44336 жыл бұрын
Regarding passenger loadings between Athenry and Limerick, I can only make general comments based on occasional observations. I do not travel the line frequently nor do I have access to passenger statistics. It just seems to me that the section between Athenry and Ennis is less used than the rest of the line. The train is normally made up with a two-car DMU, but I noticed that at weekends (Fridays anyway) it is strengthened to four coaches. There are some people that only use these DMUs between Athenry and Galway city. It could be the same between Ennis and Limerick city but I don't know that foe certain.
