I'm dealing with the same problem just like you. My nitrates jumped to over 200 ppm and 11 months later I got it below 50 ppm.
@AquariumSurge
@AquariumSurge 7 сағат бұрын
Glad you got it down.. It was a pain and time consuming dealing with this but made me a better hobbyist. I stopped bringing it down when I was around 30-50 but now ramping it up to get it down to 10PPM, which could take a few months. I feel my NO3 its too high compared to my Phosphates. Red field ratio is off so i still get a lot of annoying algae patchs. Hopefully when its at 10 it should compliment my Phosphates, which are around .10 PPM. I think the red field ratio is accurate since I had absolutely zero algae when my Phosphate and Nitrates where out of control high at equal proportions. When i started bringing the Phosphates down first than i got alot of excessive algae growth that the snails and fish could not keep at bay. Crazy how things in proportion = faster growing corals and coralline algae instead of hair algae.

Kind of yeah...I think my closed loop being on reef creast mode were it goes from very low flow to 100% within a instant is similar to a carson surge device. I think the carson surge device is great for large aquaculture facilities but with the invention of DC variable pumps it really doesnt make sense unless your talking 10K+ gallons of water. I believe my flow provides better flow than any carson surge device.

I wish more people would use them, but their bulkiness and high cost make them impractical for most, especially with open-top rimless systems where aesthetics are important. That said, I know that most reefers, regardless of experience, would agree that they’d add them without hesitation if possible. These devices create an ideal combination of variable and chaotic water movement, perfectly complementing other forms of circulation in the tank
@bruhman8005

After listening to a talk from Jake Adam’s, I decided to go with gyre flow. His point was that water will actually gain momentum as it gets consistently pushed, it pulls water from other areas and in a paper he published it showed that it will force water through small crevices that are hard to reach in colonies. I use 2 tunes 6095 and a Nero 3 on a 100 gallon. One powerhead turns on every 15 minutes and the other one goes off. I can watch the flow turn around and cause a “one way” wall of water rather than a jet stream

@@lukaivic5790 They certainly are! A few years back, I used vinegar to clean my two MaxSpect gyres, That was per the video advice given by Carlos of CoralVue. Eventually the magnet burst open on both units, Coralvue wanted to charge me 3/4 of what I paid for the unit for repair. I recently built a false bottom reef tank and it's finally beginning to take shape. It's a 22 long and I've got two Tunze 6040s, two Sicce Nanostreams, two Sicce XStream 5000s and two ReefBreeder Nautilus 900 return pumps. It sounds like a lot, but with the false bottom, I can alternate the flow - clockwise or counterclockwise. Too much flow is never enough! Thanks for sharing your tank and sorry to ramble on...

expert? just asking... less flow during the night ?? ocean/sea don't have a tide/flow break and most of the corals as well as fish came from ocean to our glass boxes
@AquariumSurge
@AquariumSurge Ай бұрын
You're absolutely right that the ocean doesn’t stop moving at night-there’s no 'break' in tides or flow. In our glass boxes, however, the flow serves multiple purposes beyond mimicking nature. For example, many reefers reduce flow at night to simulate calmer lagoon-like areas where fish and corals naturally experience lower flow, helping some fish feel safer to rest. It also saves a bit of energy in home setups. At the end of the day, it’s all about finding what works best for your reef and its inhabitants.

They are stainless steel and not submerged but being in the basement where its humid they still rust so i have just changed them out. The issue is the return pump is very powerful and plastic clamps don't work because the thickness of the braided hose. I originally had a 2" union connected to the return pump going straight up. however, i thought this method would reduce the annoying vibration. It helped some but not that much so it was a failed attempt and I wish i didnt change it.
@FarmedFrags
@FarmedFrags Ай бұрын
@ problem is it’s probably 304 Ss you would need 316 if you don’t want to rust. The plastic clamps with the gear teeth best to soften up the hose with heat while still warm get channel lock and squeeze it
@AquariumSurge
@AquariumSurge Ай бұрын
@FarmedFrags thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into those clamps. However I don't like my return pipe setup all the way to the Tank. It's just a 2" p trap that was changed from a 1" seaswirl return, that just reduced flow output so I should have just went up 2" pipe all the way up and split to 3 x 1" outlets above the fish tank. So consider this a temporary situation nothing I want to spend alot of cash for. How much you think those clamps would cost?
