Lol #1 you need a skimmer or weekly 50% changes 😂 My tanks been running successfully for 8 years with just a HOB filter and I'm very lazy about water changes but I don't use tap water.

​@@superjasonification It depends on what you're keeping. I've kept a basic soft coral 5gal tank for years on just a hang-on-back and using tap water. Never tested for anything, and did 50% water changes every week. I would not have gotten away with the same approach with LPS corals and beyond.

Yellow tang not a good option anymore as the price has gone crazy after the Hawaii shutdown. Kole tang would be my best choice as a good first tang to add.

@Bfamreef I know they used be readily available but I think a tank raised one would be worth waiting for. the price of $200 seems steep, but they just seem to survive for years compared to other tangs.

@AquariumSurge oh I'm not saying your wrong I have 2 and love them. Most tangs live quite a long time all mine are over 10 years old now. But a great option back when they were $30. Now at $200+ I'm not sure it would be my pick at that price point. Blue or yellow eye kole tang are about $70. And I find them to be just as long lived. Your video is aimed to the newer reefer and I would never advise a $200 fish to someone just starting out.

@Bfamreef yeah I know the prices and availability of all fish are impossible. I really need to find a copper band or fire fish for aiptasia control but it's not an easy find

I’ve got a blonde naso tang for my 4ft tank - 3” long for £40. I know it is not the right tank size, however the fish is fine for now.

@phalbaby16 you could get away with not having a skimmer, but if it was me id find away to add a small hang on the back filter with a small skimmer... main reason is I hate waterchanges and without a skimmer you would need to do big ones more frequently. Plus who wants to let there nutrients rise rapidly between waterchanges just to be diluted again. Using a skimmer really helps keeps chemistry stable. Doing big waterchanges will also not help stability

I just sub to your channel. I would not worry about the protein skimmer on your system. Just get good at the other concepts I mentioned and plan for a skimmer when you upgrade. Happy reefing 😊

Depends what you're keeping. A 15 gallon is small enough that simple water changes can serve enough to export waste. Especially if you don't have to be too concise with nutrient levels (if you're keeping fish only, fish only and inverts, or soft corals). Mandatory if you're keeping acroporas and other SPS corals. Highly recommend with LPS corals.

@juli8vdberg562 how small are you thinking? I don't recommend a reef tank under 30 gallons because of the temperature swings. They do sell micro reef tanks, maybe in the future ill set one up and make a video. Would be cool to have it connected to my larger display so I don't have to worry about chemistry

@@AquariumSurge oh the sweet cute micro Aqua Medic Armatus XS is 1,5 gallon .. cute little eye catching one with no more than 3 or 4 sps in it and one sexy shrimp or hermit crab is what I have to learn the basics before heading for much bigger

@@juli8vdberg562 I think you can get away with zoas, leathers and shrimp in those but honestly it will be challenging to keep anything alive in a 1.5 gallon aquarium. But i get it they are pretty awesome looking but I dont think they are good for long term. However, if you can keep corals alive in there you are definately going to be successful when you upgrade.

@@AquariumSurge the local store here has them since a long time now and it just fits 4 or 6 SPS and no more than one crab and one shrimp, or one snail in it; it is made for SPS display only idd and on a miniature scale .. but trust me, they have Xenia in it and it pulses beautifully as Kenyan tree and Anthelia etc etc .. I don’t recommend it to anyone thinking it can have all sorts but just 5 and no more .. I already have one yellow fiji leather at center in my plan and once the 90 day cycle is done, will put them in it .. the shop is massive and has all sorts of corals and fish ( not in USA )
