The thought I had watching the grip as Gio said "the more pressure you put on them, the more grip" is if you are using something the size and weight of a guitar body or something slightly lighter would you actually get better grip from using 4 blocks as opposed to using 6 blocks. My thinking is that while you have 1/3 less surface area for gripping, each block is supporting more weight/pressure with 4 blocks as opposed to 6 blocks. Gio only tested this at the highest weight where he was not losing grip with anything he tried. I look forward to future videos. Also curious how of a difference in grip you get with the 3 different heights as you clearly have less surface area with each height level? Gio, thanks for doing these honest stress tests to show the failure points.

I have my set of these Gecko Blocks and even though I have not used them yet I still have full confidence in them. Yes the lighter weight wood moved a bit in this demonstration that movement was slight and in my opinion not a true failure. Courser grit sand paper would most likely cause more movement because of the greater friction. But even then they are still better than just having the piece being sanded just laying on the work surface.
@BenchCritters10 күн бұрын
@@robertr4193 thank you Robert. I’m sorry I didn’t of that, hopefully this will still provide some value to give people an idea of what to expect 👍
@robertr419310 күн бұрын
Not a problem I still believe that it was a valid demonstration. Most time when a person will be using these Gecko Blocks they will most likely be using the finer grit of sandpaper because they will be starting the final finishing process when they will will want to be protecting the back or under side. The coarser grits they can just clamp the work piece directly to the work bench because they will not be too concerned about scratches because they will be sanding the other side during the finishing. When they flip it to the opposite side they may choose to use the Gecko Blocks then to help preserve what they just sanded.

PLEASE READ - I forgot to mention in the video to wash them before first use for max grip. Don’t wait for them to get dirty before you clean them. They’ll feel a little waxy from the factory. This is just a mold release agent used to get the blocs out of the mold when manufacturing. They’re much grippier once this is removed! Kind regards Gio.

Awesome review Gio. Hope all is well for you across the pond. Have you ever had to change the brushes in the motor during that time? I bought my first trim router after much research with reviews on the internet vs price as you know my financial status. The off name brand I got is an up and coming company that makes many different shop level tools and I found it interesting they sent spare brushes. Is that something I should worry over as I get more into power tools?
@BenchCritters16 күн бұрын
@@borgonianevolution Thanks Bill, all is peachy over here! It’s great that they sent spare brushes and actually I’ve been very lucky there, to date I’ve never had to replace them. As with most things the more off brand go, the more aware you need to be about being able to replace parts if there’s issues, but honestly there are very few power tools now that you can’t get standard replacement part for. I get what you mean about budget, it’s always a balancing act and trade off. I try to budget according to use so the most used tools I’ll budget more for. The occasional tools I’ll consider going cheaper if it’s a stretch financially. 👍

Good review. I do not personally own any Makita tools but I am aware of their quality. One of my cousins used to have a set of different battery powered tools I don't remember just which ones for sure but I know he had the drill, a light, and a small circular saw. They were a very early set that had some round or at least semi-round battery packs. When new they were great for the things he was using them for As they aged and the batteries aged they got weaker and got to a point where they would barely hold a charge. They were old enough by that time the batteries had been redesigned and no longer ably to find but he used them for a good 7 to 10 years if I remember correctly. I really miss my cousin Patrick. He passed away almost 3 years ago now.
@BenchCritters17 күн бұрын
@@robertr4193 I’m sorry to hear that. And yes the early battery powered tools didn’t have the same kind of longevity. I’ve found my modern 18v batteries to be very resilient to degradation and great at holding a charge.

Got mine today. No reason as of yet for me to use them but the fact that I got them today is a testament to rapid work by the folk at Gecko. I really like the material. Firm enough but just a little give so I don't think the chances of it marring anything are significant. Firm enough that they should easily handle anything I'm likely to put on them. Gecko recommended washing with soap and water to get rid of some material (I think wax) used in manufacturing and once that is done they are fairly grippy. So far I'm really favorably impressed. Maybe that will change once I've been able to use them for several projects but right now I'm pretty pleased.
