Hi. Could you please share what parts you use and codes? Thank you so much.

Hi, As to the hardware (Motor, Power Amp, Rotary Variable Differential Transformer etc.) it is all stuff that I put together back in 1986 ... so knowing what it is is of no help. However, I can tell you that the motro was from a DECtape (Google that), and the RVDT set me back some serious $$. As to the "code", it was all automatically generated by Simulink and the Arduino support package. Best regards, Dick

Hi, Regrettably without the probe the instrument does not even make a good door stop. At this moment (3/4/2024, 8:25AM PST) there is a probe with accessories (RARE) on eBay for circa $900. That is the going rate even without accessories. As a lab project, this link shows an attempt at building a probe: www.davmar.org/pdf/HP4815A-DK.pdf . I was not impressed by the results. It seems to me that you would need a probe as a reference to build one. Even getting the probe apart seems not to be obvious. I have a second instrument with probe, but don't want to split the pair. Sorry that I don't have better news. Dick

@w1qg I found a pdf on how to build one. it's online, including SMT parts and op Amp. I'm on it. Very simple build, with brass housing. Custom plug in , and test probe, including T probe test jig for resistor testing. And by the way, it's 360 degrees. Not 90. I got the manual.

Max input is 20 watts. Have 3 of these amps (1452G, 2252G, 4452g). Over past twenty years. So-- good and bad: Good: If you are care full and don't overdrive, amps are great. You must use AWG 8 to ensure proper voltage. Recommend Astron Rs70 power supply. If you make a mistake, overdrive it, SWR's go up, you will blow them up. No protection on these amps at all. Buyer beware. And good luck trying to get it fixed. Problems are well documented on QRZ and Eham.

Used, and properly checked by someone that can prove that is working... I'd say circa $600 to $900 depending on cosmetic condition. But simply saying "used" will not be convincing. HTH as they say.

Very nice demonstration of this beautiful vintage GR instrument. To your comment of how good the condition is, I think most of these instruments were taken out of a locked box and the graduate students were allowed to use them for a short time and then they were inventoried and locked up again. I think that is why so many are in such good condition. Secondly, as you would know better than me, other instruments that read admittance, for example, would be a challenge to use to convert the readings to impedance with paper and pencil. I dare say, it must have been somewhat of a nightmare to use these instruments with the tedious paper and pencil arithmetic conversions often necessary. I write Excel programs to do my conversions and have posted a few videos on GR instruments. Lastly, I use my GR instruments to verify the accuracy of the new fangled digital instruments - not the other way around. Thanks for taking the time to post for posterity and just the sure beauty and quality of these magnificent instruments. WA4QGA 73
@w1qg
@w1qg 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments! As to condition, GR instruments were expensive, and those intended for field use had pretty robust cases to protect them. This instrument is a follow-on to the original 916-A and was intended for broadcast station (F < 3MHz) engineers to measure (large !) antennas and matching networks. Certainly some ended up in university labs and those, as you say, may well be the pristine ones. Ok, on the Excel conversions, I perform similar conversions using MATLAB. 73, Dick

Hi Henry, Regrettably, I have none. It is interesting that the schematic of the probe is provided in the manual, but that is about it. Hello! thanks for this very nice video! Is there a way to use this HP 3581a to measure SINAD? thanks!
@w1qg
@w1qg 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, SINAD is a combination of a narrowband measurement of the Sine signal, and a broad band measurement of the noise along with distortion. This is not the right tool for SINAD. The most direct way would be to get something like an hp 8903b. Maybe even some software with PC and sound card would work. I have not kept up with what is out there for this. Search ComTekk SINAD or Sound Card SINAD.

Francis Liuzzo it would have to be all plastic for $1700. That’s the price of high end 1/5 scale and any tantamount of quality will drive costs up significantly. The high end 1/4 scale with solid axles have cost folks 15k. Imagine a true travel IS all four and 4x4? The engineering involved would take months if not years. Look at Grave Digger.
