When we are talking about inhabiting Moon or Mars, we firstly should think about why Kerguélen Islands haven't been called home by more French people after 3 centuries. If French people are not nomadic, why would American people want to inhabit Moon or Mars if there's even no oxygen.

Adak can be the new immigration processing center. Thom, send them all to Adak Military base in Alaska. They say they come for work; they can work and pay their rent while we contain them with less security. The work they get while they wait can repair and rebuild they damaged homes and barracks. There are schools and places to have retail. This way we can offset the cost as we lower their wage credits having them pay for their food and rental housing. ADAK can be the main US immigration processing center. They even have a hospital. They need to understand that it is not free to live in the US. ADAK ABANDONED MILITARY BASE WILL BE A DETERRENCE. This will be cheaper than us using and creating new facilities. They can rebuild and restore the Alaska military base. The military can run it.

There's something a bit sad about hearing about that strong sense of community that came about because of inherent suffering of everyone living there. And when the suffering is finally gone, the community starts to shut down too... On the one hand, the suffering is gone, on the other hand, it's like you lost something else important too.

I got interested in this set of remote islands back in 1978 when I created a country called the Sovereignty of Camdenshire as an interactive simulation with others to study the political process and used this island as its national territory to include the Crozet Islands as the Commonwealth of North Canterbury. It's curious how differently the name of the islands have been pronounced. Here, its Ker-GOO-len. Others have pronounced it as KER-ge-len, Ker-guy-len and as Ker-geh-LEN. However its pronounced, I enjoy these videos about life on the island since, apart from encyclopedia entries back then, I knew very little about the islands themselves beyond the basics. To see it is a real treat. Thanks. Btw: the avatar is Camdenshire's national flag. Another btw, its not the South Indian Sea, but the South Indian Ocean.

My husband was stationed at Adak from 73-76. The saddest day was when we had to get on the airplane “Reeves Aleutians Airways”. My oldest son was born there, and I would love to take him there to show him where he was born. Our house was next to the commissary and bank. We were nearest the runway. Also, my husband was photographed at the National Forest with another sailor, my husband is on the right if you should see it. Thank you for sharing. Hello from Washington State.

Wasn’t there an incident there where a US destroyer and submarine came and blew up an alien ship and brought it to Area 51 in the US. The aliens were pumping sea water into a container and then hit one of their supply buildings with a “beam”. Then went into the ocean with their spaceship. The island called for assistance and only a US submarine could get there in like 11 days or something. A plane would’ve had to refuel on route.

There are some trees, just not native ones, mostly Monterey Cypress planted in the settlement, I think I also saw some type of European Aspen in that video, also not native. There is one native woody shrub, the Kerguelen Cabbage (Pringlea antiscorbutica), that looks like a head of Napa Cabbage stuck atop a small thick trunk, and one woody sub-shrub, Azorella selago, that looks like a green couch cushion with tiny sharp rosettes of leaves. The climate could either be classified as a heavily ocean-moderated tundra climate or a subpolar oceanic climate, and conditions there are very similar to the Faroe Islands. There is no permafrost in the lowlands and there are many bogs.

Looks like as of this year (2024) tourist visits to Kerguelen via the Marion Dufresne have been discontinued indefinitely. I don't speak French so I can't explain why, other than surmise it is because Covid is still around and could contaminate the island.

Father Damien cared for the patients and established leaders within the community to build houses, schools, roads, hospitals, and churches. He dressed residents' ulcers, built a reservoir, made coffins, dug graves, shared pipes, and ate poi with them, providing both medical and emotional support. After 11 years caring for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of those in the leper colony, Father Damien contracted leprosy. He continued with his work despite the infection but finally succumbed to the disease on 15 April 1889. Father Damien also had tuberculosis, which worsened his condition, but some believe the reason he volunteered in the first place was due to tuberculosis.
