Don't have time to watch the whole thing this morning, but a couple of thoughts. This was back when a marching band was a marching band. No pit, no electrically amplified instruments. If you couldn't play it while carrying it on the field, it wasn't in the show. One thing caught my eye at about the 2:45 mark where you see a student playing a french horn on the field, and in the background you clearly see another student playing a mellophone. Can't remember seeing a mix like that before. Maybe it was during a period when mellophones were just coming into use and the band hadn't yet acquired enough of them for all the french horn players to use on the field? Another thought was that a band like this doesn't happen overnight, or even over a period of months. It takes years to build a band program as fine as this, and it takes great guidance from some really good directors. We were blessed to have Allen Brumley as our head director beginning in the '75-'76 school year (my sophomore year). I'm proud to have played a small part in this program in the years that lead up to the performances in these videos, marching with the Cardinal Band from the '75-'76 school year, through the '77-'78 school year. During my senior year, we also put close to 300 people on the field at half time if you include all the flags, twirlers, etc. It was an amazing experience being part of such a large, really good, high school marching band.

yeah no amplification which they dont do anymore, i go watch DCI and its all amps ... and by the way i agree the success took years to build and thats why in my opinion it was Casillas from Coakley and whoever was at Gay Vernon that were the key to that slow progress success at the High School level, they laid the foundation, Brumley could not do what he could if the Jr. High level sucked lol -- dont get me wrong Brumley took those Jr. High players and molded us along the way but the Jr. High level directors deserve just as much credit.

@jcorral2 Roger Harms, who later became head of all music programs fir the entire district was at Vernon. Before Casillas at Coakley were Don Alderman, and before him, Alfonso Cardenas. The first 2-3 years under Mr. Brumley, the HHS students from Coakley were trained by Alderman and/or Cardenas, not Casillas.

@@richardbrotzman3152 ... what years was Casillas at Coakley?
@richardbrotzman3152Күн бұрын
@jcorral2 not sure. I think Don Alderman was only there one year--my freshman year. I believe Mr. Casillas followed him, beginning in the '75-'76 school year, but I don't remember how long he stayed. It was several years, so I know he played a big role. I was just pointing out that when the Cardinal Band first started getting built up when Mr. Brumley first arrived, he was working with products of Mr. Casillas' predecessors. I was a product of those earlier directors, and was in the cardinal band under Mr. Brumley for 3 years.

I used to live 30 mins from S Padre Island down 48 in Brownsville, TX in 94-96, as I started my NWS career there after college. I actually retire after a 30 year career and 5 NWS offices here in about 10 months. How time has flown, eh? Two adult kids, one entering his Jr year at A&M. Amazing and am blessed. I did see their Allied Forces and Thunder Seven Tours in the early-mid 80s while in HS with my older brother up here in Dallas. Man, the 80s and early 90s. Wish I could turn back time, man.

Thanks a million for videotaping this awesome TRIUMPH concert. Rik EMMETT is one of the most talented musicians in rock music. This is GOLD for any Rik EMMETT and TRIUMPH fan. The band played a handful of concerts in 1988 in support of the under appreciated 9th studio and final album with Master Rik, 'Surveillance' (1987). BUDWEISER Beer sponsored TRIUMPH's 'The Sport Of Kings Tour' and this concert is likely a result of that sponsorship with BUD.

@spuds64239 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, they can't even acknowledge Styx, Foreigner, REO or Boston ....so a band like Triumph no matter how awesome they were, won't be acknowledged as well.
