Ronald Coleman has always been one of my favorite actors, I think it’s the combination of his voice and native charm, it just works.

Okay local Martinez CA boy here, I am going to point out all the places that look familiar to me. Firstly, @7:40 pretty sure those are the lockers at Dvc that were still there when I went in 2003.

Colman was already a famed actor on stage and in silents before this one; his first American 'talkie'. Rather good for it's time; the rules of making a movie were quickly changing. As usual, Samuel Goldwyn borrowed the money to make it, then turned a handsome profit to make the next one. High-quality cast and staff.

Get a load of all the people contaminating the crime scene at the murder of the canary! 🤣 On the radio version of Philo Vance, he was always in at odds with Markham, who I believe was a chief inspector.

I remember reading and enjoying the book--it's one of the better books in the Philo Vance series. This movie drags a little, too many quiet spots that mess up the timing of the action. On the other hand, this IS 1929, and still very early after sound was introduced to movies, so I imagine they were still struggling to understand how to use sound in movies. Later Philo Vance movies were better and more interesting, like the Kennel Murder Case.

The most striking actor here is Virginia. She's at-ease in her persona, as is Allan. This movie has all the earmarks of a hip-pocket production. I wonder if anyone got paid (obviously, the actors wore their own clothing). It probably got screened at Saturday afternoon kid's matinees, or midnight views. It got people employed and the wooden acting, a decrepit plot, and penny-pinching sets didn't matter in the long run. It's an entertaining picture to someone familiar with Poverty Roll productions. Thks for posting. I've never seen it until now.

I love Ronald Coleman and Joan Bennett, and her sister, Constance! It's a bit of a shame that this set the standard for making a farce of Algy, completely changing him from McNeil's source material in the novels, in all the subsequent chapters of Drummond movies. NOTE : Ian Fleming was inspired by this "Sapper" character to create James Bond!

Thanks for posting. I've been trying to watch the series of Charlie Chan movies. Interesting that a Chinese American was actually used in the earlier movies, wonder why they didn't continue using him. My earliest memories of these movies are with Sidney Toler or Warner Oland. Although their Asian make-up is something to cringe about, the movies are always enjoyable. Any chance you have The House Without a Key 1924-25? The Chinese Parrot 1927? Thanks again for posting this one.

If the CBC here in Canada produced a remake of this, the acting would be 100 times worse, it would be a one man show, have the barest minimum of sets (a wall and a table), cost the tax-payers a couple of million dollars, and be thoroughly enjoyed by upwards of 5 members of the Liberal Party Of Canada.

Very lame Drummond movie. Can Ronald Colman every be ANYTHING except Ronald Coleman? Slow-moving, terrible dialogue, staid-acting, this version has it all...
