This is a good video. I'm taking drawing lessons and the instructor uses different brands. He knows what brand does what I suppose. For me I just love all Japanese brands of art supplies so went with Uni. I buy everything from Art supply's Japan. I live in Illinois US.

I like how you followed up the comparisons with this drawing. Both videos are very helpful and this one was really great to actually see how the differences go into effect in an actual drawing. Thanks!

I've posted a couple of replies here, so here's my take on the video: yes, all pencils are essentially the same, especially from the top brands, but for a sublime "experience" of smoothness and buttery, silky line-making, the highest quality Japanese graphite is unbeatable (which includes the Palomino Blackwing, in case you aren't aware where the graphite comes from). Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils are probably the best, as are the old Japanese-made Tombow MONO 100 that are now hard to source because they've since moved manufacture to Vietnam. I'd be happy using any of the pencils in this video, but usually default to Japanese graphite because it's sublime.

I love the Faber Castell 9000 I do mostly digital art but I still like to sketch ideas out on paper. The Faber Castell 9000 is so smooth and I like that alot beause I dont like when pencils have that scratchy feel. Great video and awesome art work.
@tiranmelkor63484 ай бұрын
Well, you should also take into account that a local brand will almost always be cheaper, and Tombows have a higher import rate from Japan. In addition, the latter are more suited to trace manga and then erasing it for the inking process.

@@DanielDChannel They are so ridiculously overpriced. Anything from top brands like Derwent, Staedtler, Faber etc. will be just as good but at a fraction of the price. I got a box of 12 Mitsubishi 9000 pencils for the same price as two Blackwing pencils. The prestige attached to Blackwings definitely makes people think they "ought" to be using them, but it's simply not the case.

People, please only state your opinions in comments because every brand has it's own plus' and downsides. You can create the same thing with ANY brand. You can make a good thing with any brand. My personal favorites are Faber-Castell, Staedtler and Caran d'Ache. My abdolute favorites are Faber-Castell because I like that brand, the pencils look premium and simplicity. Otherwise, I also like Prismacolors and Derwents. I don't really like Tombow because of their colour pencils but I have never tried their graphites. Faber-Castell and Caran d'Ache is my go-to. I usually use Staedtler by itself.

DOMESTIKA IS A SCAM. I purchased a single course on Domestika, and without my consent, they automatically included a Domestika Plus subscription. I was charged again later without any notification. To make matters worse, I can't even use the service in my country because the website doesn't work here. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME, GOOGLE THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN SCAMMED SIMILARLY. Avoid this platform at all costs!

I'm sorry but I disagree completely on the fact that the quote by Paul Cadden provides any valid justification for making straight copies of photos, because that motivation doesn't require a graphite drawing to be fullfilled, the original photo is sufficient on its own to do that, in fact it's the primary argument to claim that a photographer can be an artist. Mind you, it's not that it needs any justification in the first place, every artist is free to express themselves as they prefer, my critique is about the argument and not the activity in itself.

I could not agree more Faber Castell 9000 series all the way. Their Jumbo versions are also a must have. In saying this, I do have a soft spot for Derwent (nostalgia) although they are at times prone to breakages.

I have tried many brands and come back to Faber Castell every time (these pencils have never given me any problems what so ever and the gradients are consistant across the range. I am a little nostalgic towards the Derwent brand also. I love pencils very much indeed. How sad is that?

You agreed to GO ALONG WITH THE CONCEPT OF PROFESSIONAL GRADING OF THE MATERIALS. YOU are NOT ALLOWED TO smear graded lead, lightly or too aggressively. The graphite content must be applied in a THICK and consistent layer to reach the correct percentage of graphite content to reach the grade. Graphite is a fine dust and it won't stick to paper. Graphite dust gets sifted into grades of fineness. Its mixed with a binding agent and they grade the percentage of graphite to binding agent. A light drawing will NOT HAVE ENOUGH preservative binding agent applied to protect the graphite dust for multiple decades.

I agree on Staedtler, Faber, and Derwent being very similar. But to me, the pencil that stands out for how smooth and velvety it feels is the Cretacolor. They’re my favorite pencils and in my opinion, far more pleasurable to work with than the other artist quality graphite pencils.
@Gma77888 ай бұрын
Graphite is Graphite. It's either Graphite or it's not. The different BINDING AGENT is what you're buying. The shape of the pencil ✏️ determines the line type. Hexagonal performs totally different to triangle. You have been REJECTING grading of the Graphite. You have to smear on a thick layer of binder material to get the percentage of Graphite onto the paper. If you fail to smear on a thick layer of pencil lead, your Graphite Drawing FAILS TO MAKE THE GRADE. You didn't put down enough graphite for it to be considered HB or 4H or 6B. You actually have to put down graphite to get a graphite drawing. If you draw lightly, you put binding agent onto the paper which contains a tiny amount of graphite. You must train yourself to Reach The Grade. Then you must smear the lead firmly and consistently. You're not just putting graphite onto paper. You're also applying a preservation substance to stick onto the graphite and the paper. You AREN'T in charge of the shading. The artist WASN'T GIVEN THE JOB OF APPLYING THE SHADING. You SELECT THE GRADED pencil and you apply a firm , consistently thick layer of lead and eventually you'll see the manufacturers did their job in mixing the materials. You're NOT ALLOWED to smear a delegate or fine amount of lead. You AGREED TO GO WITH PROFESSIONAL GRADING STANDARDS. That implies that you're going to apply the substance up to the industry standards. You're NOT ABLE TO apply 2B lightly to get 2H grading. The graphite percentage will fall below the Grade. You'll only be applying 20% of the required amount of graphite for 2H.
