In today's video I'm making a graphite pencil comparison of the most popular brands in the market. Staedtler vs Faber Castell vs Tombow vs Derwent. I made this graphite pencil comparison specifically for people interested in realism and portraiture.

Best comparison ever. I was right from the first video that I thought the Faber Castell looks most stable. A lot of work to prove pencils, but your audience is worth it. Now I gotta try those FC s also. Thanks.

I love Faber=Castell, but I would never call the the most stable, or say they were best anything. Best only exists for the individual, and one thing I do have against Faber-Castell is the sets they sell. None of them fit my needs completely. Oh, and I really dislike their H pencils. None of which means Faber-Castell pencils aren't excellent, they definitely are. Stable, though? Not for me. But we all draw very differently.

I agree, Mity Mouse, and personally experienced the same thing with Faber Castell. It lays down beautifully, and consistently, with very little effort. I'm especially fond of their Pitt Graphite Matt. I love that she took the time to do this for her viewers.

I have really come to like 2H, 3H and so on in pencils, they really keep a sharp point and can draw so fine. However, I also like to draw using dip pen and ink, but once you have put down a line in ink you have to be very certain of it. I sometimes combine pencil and ink, but with the ink dominating. I also like to draw with my Apple Pencil on my iPad. I don’t think I could ever focus on just one method of drawing. I don’t draw in the extremely fine detailed style as seen in this video, but rather cartooning.

The best brand of pencil is, always has been, and always will be whichever brand a given artist prefers. It's just that simple. I've used pretty much every brand of pencil made in the last fifty years, and I have yet to find a single popular brand that won't work just as well as any other brand. As for Derwent, there's something odd there. I strongly suspect that batch of pencils was dropped, or worse. I've never had Derwent pencils break like that. I actually prefer General's over any of the brans you tested. Many believe there must be something wrong with General's because of how cheap they, but they're cheap because of where they are made, and because General's doesn't want to make a huge profit. This is actually a very, very old brand of pencils, and I know many pros who love them. General's has two basic lines, as do many other brands, and both are good, but the slightly more expensive ones, still very cheap, are the best. General's also has my favorite line of charcoal pencils, and they grade them according to pencil standards, rather than soft, medium, and hard as too many do. But the truth is there are a fair number of Chinese brands that are just as good as any of the top brands out there. It is very good to find a brand of pencils you love working with, but it is very bad to believe this means that brand is superior to most other brands, except on a personal level. I love Faber-Castell B pencils, but I really hate the H pencils. Others love them. I think Tombow makes excellent pencils, but so does Caran D'ache. But I could use Prismacolor alone and never feel deprived. There are also several Chinese brands I could use without feeling deprived in any way. In fact, I know several pros who have switched to Chinese brands, though most of them won't say so publicly. They didn't switch because the Chinese brands are cheaper, either. I thought they did until I tried the brands. I quickly learned how very good those brands are. It's all about what you like, how you draw, and how adaptable you can be. Pick you own brand accoding to how you draw, and even what you can afford. Do not be embarrassed if your favorite brand turns out to be Chinese. If you love them, then you own the best brand in the world, regardless of where it was made, how much or little it cost, or how popular or unpopular it is.

There may not be a Best Brand but there are definitely no-go brands for graphite. The artist may prefer it because they simply haven’t tried anything better, the girl in the video switched to Faber Castell 9000s as soon as she tried them. Prismacolor Turquoise I would never recommend to a soul for the lead that breaks often and the sticky cheap paint coating that covers them (the graphites variation for what it was supposed to be didn’t really hit the mark either) Staedler is clunky and not a very smooth writing experience and overall subpar quality There are others but some good pencils that can be debated for Best are Faber Castell 9000s (my personal favorite), Tombow MONOs, Mitsubishi, Derwent, Venus Drawing, etc

I mean yes, but the experience with each tool is what matters to artists. We don't want to feel like we're fighting our tools, even if we find a workaround with them.

Thank you!!! I have most of these pencils in my cart (Amazon) and I just couldn’t decide. I’m also considering the larger (jumbo) size Faber-Castell pencils. Have you tried them?
@viajedeldragonresplandeciente
@viajedeldragonresplandeciente Жыл бұрын
I really recommend the Faber-Castell 9000 Jumbo. The 5.3mm thick lead is ideal for shading. The feel of the stroke is very pleasant. Its graphite is softer and darker than that of the standard model. The thickness of the case is very comfortable to hold. The more layers are applied, the faster the tips glide and colour. In addition, the mines are very durable and resistant. ☺

Mitsubishi Uni: Best for writing and sketching Faber Castell 9000: Best for drawing. Those 2 can't be mached by other brands,not even close. Derwent graphite pencils,are junk. Honorable mention Tombow,Blackwing,Staedtler.Not as good for technical drawing as Faber Castell is,however they are great at writing and sketching.

Have you ever tried charcoal? I don't really like graphite because of how reflective it is but with charcoal it has a matte texture so no matter what angle you look at it you're values will remain the same. However it's a pitty that charcoal doean't have the smooth laydown of graphite
@EstefaniasArt
@EstefaniasArt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I actually have 2 videos about a Domestika charcoal course I bought... I really liked charcoal for the exact same reason as you do.. the only downside is that it is extremely messy 😆... so I think it's good to use both charcoal and graphite in combination, because I find that the lighter values of graphite are not reflective at all
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
Well, that's a "problem" that has never bothered the best artists in the world. First, there is never a need to look at a graphite drawing at an angle that makes it reflect. Second, some of the best and most famous art in the world looks, bad, or silly, or just wrong when viewed at an angle. Third, graphite is not automatically highly reflective. Most of this is cause by artists using the high B grades with a lot of pressure. It's how they were taught, but it is never necessary. Artists seem to forget that even 8B pencils didn't exist not very many years ago, yet drawings done then look every bit as good as drawings done now with not only 8B, but 10B, 12B, and even 14B. Contrast is everything with graphite, but it's nuts to think you can't get that contrast without using high B pencils. 6B, and even 4B were once the pencils made to contrast lower B pencils, but now artists think they have to use 8B to contrast 4B, and 12B to contrast 8B, and so on. Highly reflective graphite really is NOT a problem anyway because looking at such drawings from an angle is silly, but it's far, far, far less of a problem when artists learn to use H pencils more, and high B pencils almost never. Some of the best graphite drawings I've ever seen were done with a single HB pencil. Others never went darker than 2B, and bother had all the contrast anyone could want, and without shine. Too, if an artist believes the deepest, darkest black is a must, then they should use charcoal, or a black colored pencil, or even a black pastel pencil, which can work wonderfully. At any rate, the best artists in the world use graphite, and use it well. I like charcoal, too, but the simple fact is that charcoal is not graphite, and there are numerous things you can do with graphite that are impossible with charcoal. Smooth laydown, which high quality charcoal does have, doesn't change anything. Charcoal is not graphite and can't begin to do all the things graphite can do.

@jamesaritchie1 I enrolled in a Drawing I class a couple of years ago and thought I would hate having to use charcoal. We used willow and pencils. It ended up being my favorite over graphite. I created my final project with charcoal and, of all the drawings I made, the three I framed were charcoal ones. I don't mind the messiness because it's part of the creative process 😄. I have the Faber-Castell Aquarelle and General's but I'm thinking of supplementing them with the 3 darkest Lyra pencils because I just couldn't seem to get the background in one of my paintings dark enough.
