What exactly are you diagnosing ? If the rotor is warped then resurface the rotor...if it's too far warped then replace it..

They can if the customer pays for it. The free brake inspection or half hour charge doesn’t cover this. It’s not an efficient or practical use of time to be honest.

Most don't , unfortunately. If I'm able to get my own Shop , I wouldn't even hire you if you didn't already Own a Micrometer & Dial Indicator for Brake Inspections/Brake Repair and a Torque Wrench for Tire Lug Nuts..........If a person didn't already own these Tools , that Automatically tells me they've been doing Brake jobs Wrong for 15 years & Not Torquing people Tire Lug Nuts. Many uneducated will say those Tools are Useless , then my response is , " If those Tools aren't Valid , then why in the He_ _ is there such a thing as a Thin Brake Specifications Guide Booklet" by Motor. All vehicles have Different Specs., unless they are the same brand of car. You'd be shocked at what you see if you actually had the Guide in your possession. Some Guys are so far behind they're still telling you that Brake Bleeding Procedures start with the Left Rear Wheel - Right Rear Wheel - Right Front Wheel then Left Front Wheel. Brake Specifications/Brake Bleeding Procedures Guide can be purchased from one of the "4" Professional Tools Trucks called Matco Tools or from www.matcotools.com

Lol I’ve been an automotive technician for 15 years this is the first I’ve heard of taper correction plates. How about you machine the brake rotor if it’s warped. Under minimum thickness? Time to replace it.
@amana1480

It's not about it being warped.... the disc can be perfectly flat, but if there is a slight imperfection on the hub, then the disc won't be mounted properly...

@@amana1480 I have never seen a hub THAT bad in all my years of professional service. I get your point but it’s just not realistic. Machine if possible or replace. Done. No customer on the planet wants to pay the cost of that in-depth inspection just to find out they need to replace their rotors anyway. We have a hard enough time getting people to commit to the brake job as it is.

This is a revolutionary perspective for DIY brake job replacements. I never heard about the importance of checking runout in any of the DIY youtube videos and I've been having issues with rotor vibrations ever since I started doing brake by myself. I've always just resorted to replacing the rotor and pads, when that happened, and assumed that the rotors were simply of poor quality. Now I know better and I am ordering a runout gauge to check my HUBs and rotors and see what's really going on. Great stuff!

Put the runout gauge on the hub?
@johnjoseph7382
@johnjoseph7382 6 жыл бұрын
The fix is to take off the rotor and use a dial indicator to measure the lateral run out of the hub. If the hub has .001 or less of lateral run out, you would know the hub is good. So you would then use a wire brush to clean all rust off of the hub assembly, you could even do this before testing it for lateral run out. Then install a new rotor on after applying antiseize to the hub surface to ensure there is no rust or corrosion to the surface over time that could cause lateral run out and make sure to only torque the lug nuts to spec and never use any impact guns to install the lug nuts.

Hi John! I know this comment is a little old, but I'd really appreciate your feedback. I am about to do the brakes on my car and just purchased a dial indicator to measure the lateral runout. I know that if it is greater than .002, then it must be corrected. From my understanding, if this is the case, then one must use correction plates to fix it (3 sizes consisting of .003, .006, and .009). Is this the way you would recommend fixing theoretical lateral runout? I just want to make sure I am prepared in case my vehicle or rotor does have it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

I thought the same thing. It could be just a bad rotor. I got a bad rotor from the parts store. Plus this method ignores the stack up. The rotor has some runout and the car hub also, so perhaps you can turn the rotor to meet it's high spot with the hub low spot to fix it with out this shim.

From what i remember from going to Tech school is that there can be two things wrong here. 1- what was the runout before machining and was the rotor set up on the lathe to be the same runout as was on the vehicle? 2- what is the condition of the wheel bearings, are they part of the problem and getting wore out? Yes rotors can warp by heat due to long periods of brake application time and from improper torquing of the lug nuts but this also has to be taken in when servicing the brakes. IE. i did not see the tech on the video check runout of the hub assembly as well to see if it was rotor or hub issue. These may have some value but why is there 0.006 runout on a machined rotor? Doesn't compute with me, something was done, or is wrong with the big picture.

@kg4boj
@kg4boj 9 жыл бұрын
Hemchandra Pandey Call a metrologist, they will take your dial indicator and test it with objects with traceable measured dimensions, then they will give you a table showing how far your dial indicator is from "normal" at min scale, max scale, and maybe a few points between. Other than adjusting it for zero, which these have a turning bezel to do that, you can't adjust how far the dial travels between a given measurement and another, but you can have data that shows how far off scale it might be so you can scale the results if you want your cheaper indicator to be more comparable of perhaps a slightly better made instrument.

J Lynam missed the point, even with true rotors (.002 max. runout), in many cases the face of the associated hub may not be true (virtually no runout), hence, causing lateral runout which will be magnified to a calculable degree at the rotor face. It's kinda like love and marriage. You can't have one without the other.
