To easily apply the compound...... rub it on plentyfull. Then take a hairdryer and warm up the leather.... When the compound starts melting rub it in with you fingers. Perfect spread and better results.

Have a better way to clean your strop. I use rubbing alcohol. Spray it over the surface wipe off with paper towel. It gets it clean and you don’t have to wait for it to dry off from all the oil. For smooth side of leather not rough

An eraser will clean the rough side,, rubber and rub..!

The compound sticks don’t work as well as the liquid stropping compound. The liquid stuff has very accurate Diamond sizes. You can get a much better stropping experience.

@Aa-ron22Күн бұрын
@@BladesOnABudgetand if you get stoppy stuff use it on the smooth side not the rough side. Spray emulsions are meant for smooth leather. The green bricks go on the rough side

I got the gray g10 version with gray coating on the blade. It's super sharp, excellent action (especially for the thumb) and lockup is rock solid. Ergos are great as well. The only thing I'm not totally thrilled about is the reverse flick functionality... I'm not sure if it's the shape of the hole (it's too small or doesn't go far enough toward the point to get the proper leverage) or the angle the blade excites the handle (or both), but my finger gets to get caught up rather than cleanly deploying the knife. Even so, it's still one of the best budget knives I've ever seen and it's crazy how good the tolerances and fit and finish have gotten for knives in this pricepoint.
@BladesOnABudgetКүн бұрын
Yeah, I really love this little knife too. Put your middle finger up against the top of the hole for the reverse flip. That seems to make it more consistent for me. I had the exact same issue. And yes, the thumb flip seems to be its strength. 👍

Hey Fred, you might want to give CBN emulsions a try sometime. CBN works for both budget knife steels along with the super steels. I have found the white and green crayon compounds don't really work well on the modern super steels, the media used in the white and green crayon is not hard enough. IMHO stropping with white and green compounds just leads to rounded edges due to needing to over strop to try and bring an edge back, even on budget knives. Look at the edge under magnification and you will see the results. The CBN cuts vs abrading thus needing fewer strokes to debur or touch up and edge. I have probably used every compound available to strop a knife, CBN emulsion is my choice to get the job done. A couple of my favorite substrates to use the CBN on is Bass wood for V type edges and Balsa wood for convex. Both can be purchased in just about any hobby store or big box building supply store. This is all just food for thought, give it a try and see what you think.
@BladesOnABudgetКүн бұрын
Hey Wayne. Good to hear from you. Do you have any specific brands or microns you'd suggest? I know there are a lot of options out there. I trust that you know your stuff.
@wayneanderson991Күн бұрын
@@BladesOnABudget I buy the Bark River CBN emulsion from DLT Trading. For a very sharp toothy edge I go with the 16 and 8 micron to debur after sharpening at say a 600 to 800 grit diamond stone finish. If I go with a finer grit sharpening stone then I might go with the 4 micron emulsion and then down to the 1 micron to finish. I have not found a practical reason to go any finer than the 1micron CBN emulsion.

@BladesOnABudget2 күн бұрын
Hey man. Thanks. Glad to have you with us. Very tough call here! I just finished cut testing on the OK-81 (video coming this week) and it totally killed the test (I sharpened it first). One of the best performers yet. Much better than the RAT here. (I should have sharpened the RAT first!) Makes me really believe in OK’s M390. It’s at least a decent heat treat. And the action on the OK81 is almost flawless. But to get a really good MagnaCut at 62-64 HRC from a well known company at this price is almost unheard of. But I wouldn’t want to EDC it as the washers are stiff, not fidgety at all, & the comfort level is just so-so. But I’d trust my life to it over the OK-81 in case of an emergency. But for what I’d want to carry every day, it has to be the OK-81. Apples & oranges man. Get em both! 👍😂

Yeah, it was disappointing. And yes, most MagnaCut knives seem to be really high priced these days! But I’m confident that it will do a heck of a lot better in the next test with a new edge on it. This one will definitely get another shot. I’d still feel confident trusting my life to it.

I bought this knife cuz MagnaCut well heat treated at $85, seemed a no brainer. Plus it is a classic that just belongs in a collectors pile. I doubled down and got the RAT1 s35vn in red. I am happy with them, bargains and a bit better than a budget knife. Not gonna turn into my edc though. The 1.5 would make a good tackle box knife. I really liked your review. I got a question. Why are the edges of the spine sharper than the blade (j/k) but they are uncomfortably edgy. I heard it is to work better with a flint to start fires?
@BladesOnABudget3 күн бұрын

I heard that these 1.5 MagnaCut Rats didn’t have a great factory edge but that they did run the MagnaCut pretty high at 62-64 hrc. It may be helpful to redo some of the tests with a second edge and see how they perform with at least one sharpening.

First time viewing your channel, thanks for showing these! The Rosie is one that I've never quite understood... it just looks basic to me. Flat slab sandwich construction framelock, and the only claim to fame is that specific profile/pattern. I'm sure the real ones are done with superb fit and finish, but so are a lot of competitors that offer more complexity for less money. I might have to track down a Fosie and maybe once I get it in hand I'll see what the fuss is about, but for that kind of money I'd rather have a Koenig Arius. Next on your channel you can showcase a Farius 😂.
@BladesOnABudget4 күн бұрын
😂 One Farius coming up! (just need a couple of weeks) And yes, these are very interesting in some strange way that only seems to make sense once you hold it in your hand. While they definitely don't have the same build quality and action of the real deals, there is something "different" about the size, shape and fit in the hand that makes them far more appealing in person than what they look like in a video. I can't seem to put it down. 🤷♂️

As someone who owns both a S90V Shaman and the OK knives Shaman Clone- if I swapped out the pivot ball bearings for phosphorus washers, one could be hard pressed to tell the difference… micarta handle for the cost of the gas station price is worth it. Threadlocked it and forget it 😅 If not for the Ozark D2 Wugout, would have picked up some Narrows from OK too. My Spydercos see a lot of action, but their size are intimidating.
@BladesOnABudget4 күн бұрын
I'm a big fan of the Shaman too. One of the most comfortable handles ever. I'd probably avoid that Narrows. It has some issues with the blade hitting the spacers in the back & chipping. I've gone thru 3 of them now - all the same. Did a video on it here. They have other better knives. Their OK branded PM2 & Para 3 in CF just blew away my cut testing. Some of the best performers yet (after a good resharpening). Makes me want to grab that OK Shaman in CF/M390 now. 🤔

Is it possible OK lie about their steel ..?
@BladesOnABudget7 күн бұрын
Definitely. If it has the OK brand on it, then some of those are the real steel. I've seen a few independent tests on the M390 OK81 & OK223 that said it was real M390. Can't say for sure about the other OK branded knives. But almost everything that has someone else's brand (Spydercos, BMs, etc.) are NOT the real steel shown on the knife. If you're getting a $20 Spyderco from them, you can be sure it's not really S30V or whatever it says on the knife.
