An ACTUAL Medieval-age long-sword would destroy an actual Samurai sword. Europe had MUCH better metal than Japan ever had. If the two period-accurate weapons ever clashed, the Samurai sword would shatter; and, the Samurai sword would have NO CHANCE against actual steel armor. The swords used in the video are made of modern steel, and using modern techniques. Japan had TERRIBLE steel, which was the equivelant of pig-iron. This continues even today (which is why they IMPORT all of their steel). In order to give the Samurai swords a better chance against enemies, they ended up folding the Japanese steel. However, folding the steel more than 14 times would cause the steel to get RIDICULOUSLY brittle. There are swords out there which were folded over 1,000 times...and, they're absolutely useless during combat with another armed person. Those types of swords would shatter if/when they hit bones...so, ANY type of armor would destroy those swords.

This episode was clearly aimed at making the katana look good. The reality is that they were design for different types of combat. They were both better at different things. They did use a shitty longsword. The longsword was very light and was designed to thrust in weak points or openings in armor while being used as a slashing blade. Katanas were designed for single combat and not good against armor in reality. They are prone to breakage as the steel needed to be hardened unlike european blades.
