This show is stupid and had fake armor. Historically they used hardened plate armor. Essentially they took the idea of the shield and made a suit out of it. Real plate armor cannot be damaged by sword edge or tip. Historically they would have to get between the gaps in the armor or use a murderstroke with the hilt, or use another weapon like a war hammer to puncture the helmet. Plate armor would improve to where it made it difficult for even spikes and hammers to damage helmets. Look up Italian White Armor and German Gothic Armor. They are almost invulnerable to most weapons and definitely swords.

That's irrelevant. You wouldn't try to stab through a European breastplate in the first place. But this "Breastplate" was made out of tin. It's annoying when they compare Longswords and Katana in cutting power because anyone who knows anything knows that on average a Katana *should* cut better, it's simply physics and blade geometry. However, there are a lot of different kinds of Longswords, especially in comparison to Katana, so there are Longswords that can cut better or at least on par with a Katana. And I mean an actual historical Katana, the modern Katana are longer than they really were, naturally making them cut better than they really did. People are under the impression that the only thing that makes a sword is by how good it can cut, but that's just completely asinine. It's almost like trying to out-box a Kung Fu practitioner. Katanas are meant to slice, so you should "push" with the top hand and "pull" with your back hand to really emphasize the cut. You're only wanting to really do this with the last 4 inches of the blade. Long swords are a bit more intuitive, however their main use is for thrusting, both to pierce armor and puncture the weak points/openings in armor. In my opinion of a half Japanese guy, I love the katana but it's not the supreme weapon that over powers all others, the katana, like all other swords, has its strengths and weaknesses. The katana was built for cutting through the armor that the samurai wore and that armor was made out of many layers of stacked paper (depending on the era). The katana made a better hole in the European armor because it doesn't flex as much and the longsword with less flex comes more energy transfer into the receiving body. The forging process requires the katana's blade to be folded over and over again to strengthen the blade, the more folds the stronger the blade, however, the longsword is made with just a piece of metal and is hammered into shape with the hardening process of quenching, both of these processes are different due to the difference in use. (sorry if this structure doesn't make too much sense I'm just too tired and felt like going on a little rant)

@n0rdlys_402 жыл бұрын
@@Bourikii2992 Yeah, no. Spring steel wasn't rarer. It wasn't a type of ore as well. First, there are many records and artifacts that show European longswords were built with spring steel. And secondly, European furnaces were much superior than Japan's (Their furnaces were capable of properly melting iron to properly distribute the carbon into steel) whereas Japan's used Bloomery Furnaces that didn't fully melt the steel (Although they used the Tatara but it's essentially just a larger Bloomery furnace). Then, they get this slab of iron called "Tamahagene" (Idk the proper spelling) and have to break up chunks from the iron and steel (The steel shines brighter similar to silver). And also modern katanas use spring steel because they figured that it is way better.

This is probably the best comment here. Who’s going to do real stress tests on an actual high quality antique? Only an idiot. These are all replicas and sometimes made using modern methods. The quality of steel, varied throughout history. So after the 17th century (when steel manufacturing and quality controls were better in Europe) the long sword wasn’t bad (Sabre for some reason became more popular tho). But before that it was a crapshoot. And for the Japanese, their swords weren’t perfect either (some were higher quality than others historically also), but they did have techniques to vary the carbon content of the steel and purify their iron from very early on. The highest quality swords found from both cultures, which came much later in history, were very comparable, because good steel is good steel, simple as that. All of these tests are ridiculous, because it’s basically one form of modern steel vs another. With the Katana having varying carbon content between the spine and the edge, if the replica is “more accurate”. That all said, a pre-17th century Katana probably would have had a better chance at cutting through a pre-17th century long sword though, on average.😉

This episode was clearly aimed at making the katana look good. The reality is that they were design for different types of combat. They were both better at different things. They did use a shitty longsword. The longsword was very light and was designed to thrust in weak points or openings in armor while being used as a slashing blade. Katanas were designed for single combat and not good against armor in reality. They are prone to breakage as the steel needed to be hardened unlike european blades.

this doesn't make any sense because long swords were meant against armor samurai swords are not sharper or bent lesser there the same the only difference is that long swords are double-edged and hade a better point and were not saber-like blades and a better guard than samurai swords the plate armor is not even actual armour and these guys don't know how to use a katana or a long sword there not putting their body weight in stabs or slashes the long sword in the video is not the equal match because it's blunt purposely blunt the only thing about the blunt sword he barely half swords or stab because they know that the stab would penetrate so when they went up against there so-called plater armor the long sword blade flexed purposely they didn't use a normal long sword maybe its a sparing long sword because long swords didn't be like this historically accuratelly.
@dracophoenixttv3 жыл бұрын
I do agree with you on the Long Sword being blunt I could tell this wasn't accurate on the long sword however their Samurai sword also wasn't up to standard forge. However Samurai swords where made to cut threw bone and Flesh just as well Japanese armor is still hard to penetrant. They cut through it easily. The way the test Katana's is A tameshigiri (test cut) was performed with a newly forged katana by slicing through a stack of dead bodies or even live criminals. Of course, tameshigiri could only be done by a master swordsman to ensure the quality of the build. Katana made right can penatrate Plate armor. However the long sword also would have went through it as well. also samurai also used another type of weapon more so it was a long bladed staff like weapon which also very much so go through plate armor. I am convinced the winner in a fight though between Samurai and Knight would be more skill dependent one would win.

It dents easily and that's the idea. What weak points are you talking about? A blunt weapon is meant for damage, not accuracy
@epicgamer551 Жыл бұрын
@@Icarus_Qwq Very not true, blunt weapons weren't any better compared to other things because properly made armor doesn't just crumple when hit with a stick, if it did blunt weapons are all people would have used. But when you look at muster rolls, inventories, and even art from the period it was predominantly filled with swords and spears and other polearms, rarely maces or warhammers. And as for weakpoints there are absolutely better areas to hit with a blunt weapon, just as there are better areas to hit with a sword. The primary weakpoints aimed at are as follows. The head, more specifically the visor if one was worn. While a helmet shot was rarely likely to outright kill the person underneath, it can be very jarring and disorienting, making a person easier to grapple, or wear down faster in a fight, or if a visor was worn, targeting the visor was a good strategy as it could pop the rivets holding it to the hinge, opening up the face to strikes. The neck is always a good weakpoint to aim for, even when fully enclosed metal gorgets come around, as the plates here are still fairly thin, meaning if a strong blunt strike was landed it could hamper head movement. Shoulders were one of the best targets to strike with any large weapon, blunt or not, as there are many large nerves in the shoulder, and shoulder armor could generally be broken from it's arming points easier. Knee shots are also a very good area to hit, but can be better or worse depending on if your opponent is wearing a harness with a riveted construction or a floating construction, but better than hoping it's a floating harness you could also just strike the back of the knee, where there is no armor. Beyond these weakpoints blunt weapons were fairly useless against armor. Striking the breastplate is never a good idea and is only a wasted attack. The arms and hands seem like they would be a good target but in practice they move far too much, and will just move with the force of a swing, unlike the legs, which will be sturdy and grounded. Blunt weapons were not magical armor crushers that any barely trained peasant could pick up and swing around with a bit of gusto and instantly kill twenty knights. They were simply a different breed of weapon that had it's own rules to follow.

Because, well, the test was clearly made in favor of the katana. 1. The armor shown on the video was made really, really bad. Literally sheet metal turn into an armor. 2. The longsword was BLUNT and you can clearly see that through the video. 3. They used the longsword wrong multiple times while they did some actual rather good cutting motions with the katana. If you have actual idea of how European smithery was or how well thought and made those armors and swords were made then you'll know how bad this video does to European smithery. No sword, no matter if it's a longsword or a katana, can cut through armor (actual good armor unlike shown here). And don't get me wrong, the katana is a really interesting sword and was good for what it was meant, but the longsword was better made, had more versatility and in some cases they were lighter than katanas.
